Spring Awards Banquet May 28
Visit the TCC Trinity River Campus
We are excited to announce the
spring banquet will be held at
Tarrant County College, Trinity
River Campus this year. We will
begin serving dinner at 6:30pm
and the program will start and
awards will be given after that.
We have invited the college
president to speak at our
banquet this year and are
excited about the students
beginning classes there next fall.
This year you will not be able to
purchase tickets at the door.
Please reserve your tickets prior
to May 22 nd . Adult and student
tickets are $8 and children under
10 are $5. All ticket sales cover
the cost of the dinner and
banquet. The PTSA has worked
very hard to keep ticket prices
down to a minimum because we
want all students to be able to
attend the banquet and bring
parents with them.
We hope you can join us for the
banquet this year. Those who
attended last year said it was
worth attending. This also gives
End of Course Exams are just around the corner
We will have math, science, and social studies End of
Course exams from May 7 until May 16. If you have
scheduled any doctor’s or other appointments for your
child then, please contact the school to ensure it will not
affect their testing. We have been working hard to
ensure our students are as prepared as possible for
these required exams. We have offered after school
tutorials, and several Saturday prep sessions, including
Saturday, May 4 th from 9am until 12noon. Teachers
also have been giving out review guides for students to
use while preparing for the exams. If your child has
completed his or her homework, ask him/her to pull out
the review sheet for one of the classes and go over it
with you. Ask them what they believe they will see on
the test. Quiz them, and show an interest in the exam.
Also please have your child get plenty of sleep for
several days prior to each test and make sure a healthy
breakfast is eaten each day. A well rested and properly
fed tester is going to have an advantage on these tests.
Each test is 4 hours long, so the students must focus
for long periods of time.
Please help your child be as prepared for the tests as
possible!
parents an opportunity to visit the
college that is partnering with us.
The Trinity River Campus is a
beautiful and inspiring place to
attend classes. It was built to be
a corporate headquarters for
Radio Shack so it has a very
unique feel. It is a modern,
urban building sitting just south
of the Trinity River overlooking
north Fort Worth.
College Trips went well
On April 15 th we
took the 9 th graders to
UNT in Denton to visit the
campus. We enjoyed a
trip to the chemistry
department where we
learned about nanotubes
and the future of battery
and energy storage. That
research is going on right
now. We learned that
pencils make great
conductors of electricity
due to the properties in
the carbon graphite. We
also enjoyed exploring the
food options at the
dormitory cafeteria.
For the second year in a
row TABS was the only
high school invited to
Research Appreciation
Day at UNTHSC on April
12 th . Our 9 th grade
students were able to walk
around the poster
presentations and talk
with graduate students,
professors, and guests
about the research they
were presenting. Each
student went on a medical
terminology scavenger
hunt and also viewed a
series of research posters
and interviewed the
presenters.
The 10 th graders attended
the poster presentations
as well, but they were
treated to lunch and were
present at the keynote
address. This year the
keynote speaker was
Nobel Laureate Stanley
On the same day
we took the 10 th graders
to TSU in Stephenville to
see what they have to
offer. The trip was long,
but it gave our
sophomores a new
perspective on college
possibilities. They also
enjoyed the lunch choices
in their cafeteria. It seems
the big hit was the choice
in meals. Colleges tend to
provide a refined standard
of living for their students.
College students who
work hard will have the
benefits given to them on
Research Appreciation Day (RAD 2013)
Prusiner. Dr. Prusiner is
famous for his work with
prions (the cause of mad
cow disease). Although
his presentation was
made primarily to a higher
education audience, our
students followed along
and were attentive. We
hope they understand a
little more about how the
scientific community is
working deliberately to
understand more about
human health and how
our bodies work and
interact with our
environment.
Four of our top students
were able to have
breakfast with Dr. Prusiner
and other important
guests and toured the
Research Appreciation
Day event with him. We
appreciate our partners at
the UNT Health Science
their respective college
campuses. We hope our
students saw that during
their short visits to the
campuses.
We want to thank
the many parents who
attended the trips with us
including: Mr. Muga, Mr.
Paris, Mr. Simpkins, Ms.
Garcia, Ms. Rueda, Ms.
Krishnaswamy, and Ms.
Parsons.
Center for inviting us and
giving our students this
special opportunity to see
research in action.
Again we want to thank
the parents who joined us
as chaperones at RAD!
Also, congratulations to our Link Crew Student Coordinator, LaTeah Williams!
Link Crew is a program that welcomes the freshman class at the beginning of the school year and continues to support
them throughout their first year of high school. These students were chosen to be Link Leaders because they have
been identified as people on campus who are positive role models, responsible, possess leadership qualities, are kind
and, most importantly, have the desire to give back to their school community.
Remember, Link Leaders, you are expected to sign up for a PSAT prep program this summer or volunteer for both the
May 2 nd Orientation and the Summer Bridge Program. See Ms. St. Amand for additional details.
Link Leaders, look for reminder postcards to arrive at your houses at the beginning of August. These postcards will
serve as your reminder to attend the mandatory Link Leader training on Friday, August 23 rd from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. You cannot fulfill your duties as a Link Leader without this training.

We are so proud of Salma
Elkhoudi for placing 2 nd AS As spring break approaches, I remember how the spring break of
my senior year in high school changed my life forever. I was a student
at Dunbar High School for Science and Engineering Professions, here
in Fort Worth. My AP Calculus teacher, Mr. Gossman, and my AP
Physics teacher, Dr. Reidl, had given us take-home assignments to
complete during spring break. Of course, I waited until the last few
days of spring break to even look at the exams. I remember that
Saturday night working on the Physics test. My eyes were getting
tired, so I figured it was time to go to bed. I woke up the next morning
and realized I was seeing double of everything. I went to my mother’s
room and asked, “Are my eyes crossed?” She said “No. Why?” I
replied, “I’m definitely seeing two of you right now.” Since my family
doctor was not open on Sunday, my mom decided I needed to go the
emergency room. It wasn’t a real emergency and so we had to wait
for quite a while to be seen. We waited so long that I began to cry, not
because I was afraid at how my eyes were floating around
uncontrollably, but because I was so concerned about finishing my
Physics exam before school the next day.
Well, I had lots of medical exams that day and the days to follow,
including CAT scans, eye exams, and a painful lumbar puncture. I
was in and out of the hospital for a few weeks and the doctors never
determined why I lost control of my eye movement. When I finally
returned to school I had to wear an eye patch so that I could focus on
one thing at a time. My friends called me “Captain Crump.” (Crump is
my maiden name). It was quite the experience and I’m glad that I
recovered completely. I share this story to remind you all to take care
of your health, to rest, and to not wait until the last minute to do your
work over spring break…and to caution you about the clear
correlation TABS student between places evil physics 2 exams and your vision (just kidding!!!
Tornadoes are classified
