The Pierre de Coubertin Awards are named
after the founder of the modern Olympic
Games and take place on an annual basis to
recognise senior secondary students who demonstrate
attributes consistent with Olympism
through participation and commendable behaviour
in sporting activities.
All secondary government and non government
schools are invited to nominate one recipient
from year 10, 11 or 12 for the Pierre de
Coubertin Award each year. Each nominee
must participate actively in the school’s physical
education program with a consistently positive
attitude and must have represented the
school in a sport.
A piece of original art or literary work (for example
– essay, poetry, sculpture, paintings etc)
which demonstrates the student’s appreciation
and understanding of the Olympic Movement is
submitted.
Maddie Springall was nominated for the award
from Maribyrnong College.
The presentations took place on Sunday 16 th
In the month of August, Emma Johnson,
Kirstin Segond and Natalie Brajanovski,
had the great opportunity to represent
Victoria in the Secondary School Girls
State Soccer Championships which was hosted in Darwin.
The selection process was made up of three trials where we
were successfully chosen out of sixty female participants. We
then had to undertake a number of training sessions at Darebin
International Sports Complex in preparation for the competition.
The trip was very exciting and the team was very enthusiastic
to face the challenge ahead. After a week of playing soccer in
very hot and humid conditions, we finished fourth, with three
wins and three losses. It was fantastic to witness great sportsmanship,
dedication and talent across the states.
Overall we enjoyed contributing our best, meeting new people
and watching Darwin’s awesome sunsets.
Maddison Springhall’s thoughts on the day:
On Sunday the 16 th of September I had the privilege
of being nominated for the Pierre de Coubertin
award. The day started off with the MC talking about
what the Pierre De Coubertin award actually is. I
found the information very interesting as it helped
give me an understanding of the significance of the
award. There were 170 people there from schools
around Victoria. There were also former Olympians
who talked to us about their experiences and
achievements throughout their careers.
We were then presented with our awards which were
a certificate and a badge with the Olympic rings on it.
The presentations concluded with the MC interviewing
Mike McKay who is part of the Oarsome Foursome
rowing team. Other Olympians that were there were
Peta Edebone, and Mark Turnbull. I was lucky enough
to get a photo with both Mark Turnbull and Mike
McKay.
It was a very exciting day and I feel very honored to
receive the award.
VSSSA U/15 Metro State AFL Football Team
for National Championships
On the 10th of April 2007, I went to try out for the VSSSA
U/15 Metro Football Team. There were 60 students that were
at the first tri-outs and they were going to cut it down to 50.
I was one of the lucky players that made the 50, and then
made the team of 22. This year the carnival was held in
N.S.W at the grounds of Macquarie University. We left on the
21st July and returned on the 28th of July. Our first game
was on the 22nd against W.A 2. We won. The Scores were
Vic Metro - 21.9.135 to WA2 - 3.3.21. We ended up going
through the carnival undefeated. Our closest encounter was against W.A 1 in the grand final. We won by 3
points. The scores were Vic Metro - 7.14.56 to WA1 - 7.11.53.
It was the best feeling winning the championships and you make so many good friendships out of it.
Hopefully I can make the U16’s team next year.
Daniel Schibeci—Year 9
2007 Australian Boxing
Cadet (Under 17) Team
Ibby Balla was recently selected
to compete in the World Boxing
Championships with the U17 Australian
Boxing Team. Ibby spent
one week training at the Australian
Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
The championships were
held in Azerbaijan at the cross
roads of Eastern Europe and
Western Asia, where he spent two
weeks competing. We are proud
of Ibby’s achievement.
Ibby’s tells his story:
“ Before Azerbaijan I spent a
week at the AIS, training and preparing
for the world titles. Spending
a week at the AIS was like
torture. After the training the
Australian Cadet team and I flew
out to Azerbaijan.
On the 3rd of September was the
first day of the fights. We
weighed in and the draw was
picked. Unlucky for me I drew the
Cuban who was the last world
champion. Before the fight there
was a ceremony where all the
countries came out with their
flags.
achievements of athletes
in the Sports Specialist
Programs.
Being out there representing my
country with the Australian flag
was an indescribable experience.
Going into the ring with all the
spectators watching, made the
back of my hair stand up. My opponent
was an experienced campaigner
and a trick boxer which
made the fight really difficult. Although
I lost the fight I nearly
had the fight when I rocked him
with a wicked upper cut.
I learned a lot from this experience
and I was proud to
represent my country.”
Coaching College
In the month of August, our Year
11 student David Bailey, a state
level baseballer attended the ISF—
NCFA International Coaching College.
The event was organised by
the International Softball Federation
(ISF) and National Fast Pitch
Coaches Association. The 4 day
course was held at the AIS in Canberra
and is custom made for National
Team level coaches.
The aim of the course is to present
high standard offensive and
defensive strategies, hitting and
practice concepts for softball/
baseball coaches. Those attending
the course were required to be
authorised by their national federation.
After successfully competing
the course David received an
ISF International Coaching Diploma
and a complete manual of
everything covered over the four
days. David has offered to coach
the baseball and softball teams for
school sports.
Here’s what David Bailey had to
say: “The course was run over a
gruelling four days.
We would start at
7:00am and finish
at 10:30pm with
breaks for lunch and
dinner. We went
over offensive
strategies, defensive strategies,
hitting and practice organisation.
A lot of this information was aimed
at coaching elite players however
there was a lot of strategic and
other information that even an
average coach should be using.
It was a great experience. I
learned things that I’d never learn
otherwise. I made some friends
and useful contacts which I can
source if I need to.

Work Experience Report
From the 13 th of August through to the 24 th of August
all Year 10 students participated in Work Experience.
This was quite an eventful time for many of our sport
students providing them with opportunities to experience
and explore the real world of sport and work.
Work experience saw placements at organisations such
as Victorian Institute of Sport, working in the fields of
Physiotherapy, Victorian Basketball Association, Melbourne
Sports and Aquatic Centre, Sports Retail Industry
(e.g. Rebel Sport), Western Jets, and with PE
teachers at various high schools including Maribyrnong
and Caroline Springs College.
Student’s views on Work Experience
Dylan Smith,
Work Experience at
the Richmond Football
Club. His say:
The two weeks of work
experience is a time in
my life I will never forget.
I worked in two different
aspects of the sports industry.
Week One—Melbourne
University Sport Centre.
During my time at Melbourne
University some
of the jobs that I did included
helping with administration,
assisting
with group work outs,
personal training, cleaning
exercise bikes, database
entry, jobs in the
swimming pool and the
gym and much more. I
was also told that they
were thinking of employing
me.
Week Two: Richmond
Football Club
At the Richmond Football
Club I helped out with
the Senior training sessions,
conducted football
clinics and signed autographs.
During my time I helped
out with the a football
clinic organised by the
Richmond F.C called the
Connex Tigers in
Schools Program. The
program consisted of us
teaching students basic
football skills.
A Connex representative
then talked to them about
train safety.
And just to clarify about
the signing of autographs,
the little kids
thought I was a Richmond
player and I couldn’t
say no to those little
faces. It is also a possibility
that I might be helping
with coaching again.
I will never forget those
two weeks
Sam Vickery, Work
Experience at the
Victorian Institute of
Sport.
For work experience I
went to the
Victorian
Institute
of Sport
with the
men’s soccer
head
coach. The
guy I
worked with was Ian
Greener and I worked in
the VIS complex right
next to the Lexus
centre.
Thankyou to parents and the Maribyrnong P.E. staff
for all their assistance in acquiring quality placements
for our students. Employer reports on our
student’s performance were extremely positive and
supportive of the Sport Program offered at Maribyrnong
College.
Next year I will be spending some time at the VIS
further exploring the learning needs of young athletes
and the career opportunities available. I look
forward to broadening the quality and quantity of
work placements available for our
future athletes.
When I arrived I was
shown around the centre
and introduced to all the
different people and explained
all their roles in
the organisation. One of
the jobs I helped out with
was match analysis where
I watched three VIS soccer
games and had to record
information such as
the number of times players
entered into the attacking
third, regained
possession in the attacking
third, set plays in attacking
third, shots on and
off target and successful
and unsuccessful for both
teams.
I also watched a lot of
video analysis DVD’s that
explained how top English
Premier League Clubs use
video analysis to help
their players to improve.
From this work experience
I learnt a lot about how
the VIS works with its athlete,
how much work goes
into video analysis and
how important it is to the
development of athlete
skills.
“It provided a great
insight to the
professional working
world” Jamie Merrick
“I prefer it to school”
Natalie Brajanovski,
Work Experience at
Western Region
Health Centre
(Footscray) in the
department of
Physiotherapy
Working
from nine
o’clock in
the morning
to five
at night,
most of my
time was
spent watching clients
being treated for their
various medical problems,
doing administrative
duties such as
booking appointments,
and drawing up exercise
rehabilitation programs.
I also helped
conduct exercise sessions
for the elderly
and visited patients in
their homes for post
hospital management
check ups.
The key notes to the
above experience
would be the knowledge
which helped me
understand the work
practice in Australia.
Also the independence
I felt while travelling on
my own and the extra
confidence I gained
while interacting with
staff members and clients
from a different
ethnic backgrounds.

Individual Learning Plans
Due to the resignation of Ms Erin Ripley
there has been a delay with parents
and athletes receiving a copy of
the Individual Learning Plans (ILP) for
each of the athlete involved in the
Sports Specialist Program. Mrs
Shirleyann Dvizac has temporally
been appointed as the Individual
Learning Plans coordinator. The process
is close to completion and parents
and students will be receiving their
students ILP within the next couple of
weeks which. The ILP’s will be a comprehensive
summarised document
outlining:
• Time Management Plan
• Specified Goals, including Sporting
Goals, Academic Goals, Career
Goals.
• Preferred Learning Style
• Identify Academic Areas Requiring
Improvement
• Education and Sport School
Strategies (Sports Director’s
comments)
• Timetable Modifications
• Technical Coach Report
• Performance Analysis Report
• Personal Physical Preparation
Program—Injury prevention,
Fitness testing and overall program
The Individual Learning Plan will
ensure each student athlete along
with their parents, coaches and various
support staff have a concise
overview of the educational and
sporting pathway of that student.
The aim is for each student and parent
to receive a copy of the ILP at the
end of each semester.
