ving higher TUTORING & SUPPORT All Sixth Form students at TTC have an experienced personal tutor who will support their progress and help and advise them about progression to university, college or the workplace. Tutors are the first point of academic support, and they will work with students to develop study skills as well as support students in their studies and career development. Pastoral care and efficient management require that the contact between tutor and student be maintained throughout the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form Programme Directors are also available to provide support or advice. “The curriculum has breadth and balance with a good balance of academic and vocational courses. It is fl exible and enables students to follow the most appropriate pathway for them.” “The high proportion of good teaching observed consistently exhibits strong subject knowledge, imaginative use of resources and new technology and a strong focus on independent learning.” Further support and pastoral care come from the student support managers. Each year group will be assigned a support manager to help with day-to-day issues that students may have. The student support managers are often the first point of contact for students when there are concerns with teaching and learning or of a personal nature. The student support managers will ensure that all issues are followed up and the appropriate support is put in place. Regular follow up meetings occur to ensure that progress does not drop. A clear system of tracking allows students, parents and tutors to monitor progress. Students who are doing particularly well will be rewarded. For those who are struggling to fulfil their potential, there is a system of additional support available. Tutors will guide their students through the UCAS application process, including the personal statement, and write their confidential reference. “The use of assessment is rigorous; students comment positively about prompt marking and feedback that helps them make good progress.” 5
6 The future belongs to you YOUR CAREER AWAITS Each year, a target group of ambitious young people identify themselves early on as aiming for the top universities and professions. It requires them to put in a lot of extra research, study and commitment beyond their programmes. A separate support group is set up to coach these students. We regularly see over 80 students progress to University. Last year a broad range of students applied and moved on to degree courses in subjects ranging from Business, Engineering, English, Law, Journalism, Bio-Medical Sciences, History and vocational subjects such as Nursing, Teaching, Art and Photography. Others have left to apprenticeships or jobs. For example, coachbuilders, accountants, engineers, estate agents and local businesses have all recruited some of our students this year. We have even had students go on to set up their own businesses and run for local government. Whatever your hopes and plans, you will find that there is appropriate information, advice and guidance available to you throughout your time in Sixth Form. Whilst you’re here, you will be able to access the TTC Alumni network provided by Future First. Through this, you will be able to find people who have been through the journey you are about to embark. Some have gone straight into employment, others have gone through higher education and some have set up their own businesses. Whichever pathway you are on the network will be able to support you. BURSARY The government has provided a substantial sum to assist Sixth Form students overcome barriers to their learning which come from financial hardship. This year we have helped many students with financial support. The bursary is designed to help with the costs of such things as transport, books, specialist clothing and essential trips. This help is dependent on the applicants maintaining acceptable standards of attendance and academic progress.
