productivity, engagement, fun and rigour, all through technology.
What’s Next
Over the next few months, you will have to make
some important choices about the subjects you
wish to follow next year. In deciding to study in
the Sixth Form you must spend some time in
serious thought. Discuss the courses with your
parents/carers, teachers and, most importantly,
Sixth Formers you already know. This prospectus
will provide you with information about life in the
Sixth Form, as well as help you to make informed
decisions about your options.
your expectations
Life in the Sixth Form is very different fferent from om Year
11.
In addition to having your own purpose e built facilities,
you
will have more of a say in how we run the Sixth Form, Form Form, and
you will be consulted on all aspects pects of
f school ool life. As
young
adults you will be the role models els of the th tthe school and d shou should act
accordingly. You will be given many y opportunities o portunities to engage
with enrichment activities and the he cco community ommunity munity aand
and many of
these opportunities will be managed naged ged by y you. The TThe
Sixth Form
is an active and outgoing community muni mu munity
playing ng g a
very important
part in the wider Tendring community. mun munity.
our expectations
Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility make up our core value
system – we call it ‘TTC3’. These values are at the heart of
everything we do. We expect everyone in our community -
staff and students - to model these values in our day-to-day
activities, in class, in tutorials and beyond the college.
If you are to benefit from the Sixth Form, you must be prepared
to meet academic challenges. You will become increasingly
responsible for your own learning as you develop as an
effective independent learner. You will need to create a
partnership with your teachers to achieve the best outcomes.
We aim to increase your flexibility and independence as you
move through the Sixth Form. You will need to use the greater
freedom that you will be given in an industrious and worthwhile
manner, taking advantage of the opportunity to develop your
leadership and teambuilding. We hope you are ready to meet
the challenge.
Attendance, academic progress, behaviour, conduct and
attitude are all closely monitored to ensure that you are
maximising your potential. College rules are designed with
the intention of treating you as adults and expecting an adult
response from you.
Working relationships between sixth formers and staff are
usually different from those experienced in Years 7 – 11.
Students should be reminded that they have a responsibility
to talk to teachers if work is going to be late or if lessons
are going to be missed. If work is below the standard that a
student is capable of then the teacher may ask for it to be
re-submitted.
Attitude to
Learning
At TTC, we aim to break down all barriers to progress
and promote independent learning. If the attitude is not
right, progress and independence will be limited. There
can be a whole host of reasons why a student’s attitude
to learning is less than positive which is why we use
the attitude to learning (ATL) grade as a
means to identify what support is
needed to overcome any barriers.
The attitude to learning grade
will be given by subject
teachers during regular
reviews throughout
the year. Teachers will
be asked to comment
on the attitude that
students have towards
their learning by giving
a grade from 1 to 4.
“Students speak highly of the
academic support and guidance
they receive, and the willingness
of their teachers to provide
support at an individual level.”
“Students take responsibility for
monitoring their own progress
against personal targets and
collaborate well in helping each
other to achieve.”
The ATL Grade
Grade 1: Outstanding attitude and respect towards
learning. Takes personal responsibility for his/her own
learning; always ready to learn.
Grade 2: Positive attitude to learning; works hard and
takes responsibility to improve the quality of his/her
work; usually respectful and ready to learn.
Grade 3: Inconsistent attitude to learning and lack of
respect, requiring an improvement in this subject; does
not take full responsibility for own learning; sometimes
ready to learn.
Grade 4: Poor attitude and lack of respect towards
learning and a cause for concern; takes no responsibility
for own learning or actions; rarely ready to learn.
Aiming high,
are you ready for
sixth form?
Before and after the Year 11 results, students will be guided d
towards the programme which best suits their talents,
ambitions and career interests. For some students the route e
is not always obvious and they may need to return to core
subjects to ensure they have the grades to make future progress. gress.
This is especially important if a student does not possess a
grade C in English or Maths. Pathways will be different and
personalised to the individual’s needs.
TUTORING & SUPPORT
All Sixth Form students at TTC have an experienced personal tutor
who will support their progress and help and advise them about
progression to university, college or the workplace.
Tutors are the first point of academic support, and they will work
with students to develop study skills as well as support students in
their studies and career development. Pastoral care and efficient
management require that the contact between tutor and student be
maintained throughout the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form Programme
Directors are also available to provide support or advice.
“The curriculum has breadth
and balance with a good balance
of academic and vocational
courses. It is fl exible and enables
students to follow the most
appropriate pathway for them.”
“The high proportion of
good teaching observed
consistently exhibits strong
subject knowledge, imaginative
use of resources and new
technology and a strong focus
on independent learning.”
Further support and pastoral care come from the student support
managers. Each year group will be assigned a support manager
to help with day-to-day issues that students may have. The student
support managers are often the first point of contact for students
when there are concerns with teaching and learning or of a personal
nature. The student support managers will ensure that all issues are
followed up and the appropriate support is put in place. Regular
follow up meetings occur to ensure that progress does not drop.
A clear system of tracking allows students, parents and tutors to
monitor progress. Students who are doing particularly well
will be rewarded. For those who are struggling to fulfil
their potential, there is a system of additional support
available.
Tutors will guide their students through the UCAS
application process, including the personal
statement, and write their confidential reference.
“The use of assessment is
rigorous; students comment
positively about prompt marking
and feedback that helps them
make good progress.”
YOUR CAREER AWAITS
Each year, a target group of ambitious young
people identify themselves early on as aiming for the
top universities and professions. It requires them to put in
a lot of extra research, study and commitment beyond their
programmes. A separate support group is set up to coach
these students.
We regularly see over 80 students progress to University.
Last year a broad range of students applied and moved
on to degree courses in subjects ranging from Business,
Engineering, English, Law, Journalism, Bio-Medical Sciences,
History and vocational subjects such as Nursing, Teaching, Art
and Photography. Others have left to apprenticeships or jobs.
For example, coachbuilders, accountants, engineers, estate
agents and local businesses have all recruited some of our
students this year. We have even had students go on to set up
their own businesses and run for local government.
Whatever your hopes and plans, you will find that there is
appropriate information, advice and guidance available to you
throughout your time in Sixth Form.
Whilst you’re here, you will be able to access the TTC Alumni
network provided by Future First. Through this, you will be
able to find people who have been through the journey you are
about to embark. Some have gone straight into employment,
others have gone through higher education and some have set
up their own businesses. Whichever pathway you are on the
network will be able to support you.
Our mission is to be a Sixth Form that:
fully prepares students for their futures
BURSARY
The government has provided a substantial sum to assist Sixth
Form students overcome barriers to their learning which come
from financial hardship.
This year we have helped many students with financial support.
The bursary is designed to help with the costs of such things
as transport, books, specialist clothing and essential trips.
This help is dependent on the applicants maintaining
acceptable standards of attendance and academic progress.
