Report from the PH&T Spring Meeting 2002:
"The Evolution of the Information Professional: Adding Value in the 21 st Century Organization"
April 15 - 16, Princeton, NJ
It felt more like Summer than Spring as information professionals from around the U.S. and beyond
gathered in Princeton, N.J. for the Pharmaceutical & Health Technology Division's 2002 Spring Meeting.
Attendance soared higher than the recordbreaking temperatures, with over 120 attendees and 27
vendors staying cool inside the Princeton Marriott Forrestal Village as they networked, toured the
exhibits, sampled appetizing dishes, and listened to informative programs. This year's theme focused on
nontraditional ways to apply our skills as information professionals in order to meet the increasing
demands placed on us by today's fast-paced, technologically-focused organizations.
Roger Strouse, Lead Analyst at Outsell Inc., kicked things off Monday morning with his keynote address,
"Evolution of the Information Function: External Drivers, Professional Innovations." He presented
results from Outsell's survey of end-users regarding their information requirements and the ways they
currently utilize information services. These results present several challenges to today's information
professionals and Roger went on to categorize the key "meta issues" in today's information industry and
their impact on information centers and services. He then listed the key value-added services that we,
as information professionals, need to focus on in order to meet these challenges.
Competitive Intelligence is a field into which more and more information centers are venturing. The
Competitive Intelligence Forum brought together three speakers who broached this topic from different
angles. Lisa Hayes, Business Information Consultant at Aventis Pharmaceuticals, discussed how
"information" is turned into "intelligence". She defined the difference between information and
intelligence and explained the Competitive Intelligence Cycle. Lisa presented a real-life case study
involving recent pharmaceutical events and the process involved in utilizing seemingly disparate pieces
of news to formulate corporate strategies. The skill sets that librarians possess are uniquely suited to
this task. Cynthia Hetherington, principal of Hetherington Information Services LLC, provided a very
entertaining spin on how to use free Internet sites to find hidden information about companies, people,
private organizations, etc. She described some of the services she provides to her clients, who are
mainly private investigators and law enforcement personnel and told some amusing stories that illustrate
how valuable her skills as a librarian are in her line of work. She ended her talk by providing us with a
list of her top 10 sites for pharmaceutical information. Last, but certainly not least, Bonnie Snow,
Director of Pharmaceutical Markets at Dialog, provided a lively demonstration on using the pipeline
databases to mine for competitive information, track trends, and gain an overview of therapeutic areas.
Lorna Estall, Research Information Scientist at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, opened the afternoon
session with her presentation on Websmart, a home-grown workflow tool developed and implemented by
the library. Websmart is a multi-featured database system used for tracking search requests and storing
the results. This system allows the library to generate statistical reports, capture search strategies and
develop best practices for searching. The users themselves can also track the status of their searches
and view results from previous requests.
In addition to the program sessions, attendees at this year's meeting had the opportunity to participate in
a mini Swap & Shop, organized by Barbara Maletz. This table was extremely popular, with many
innovative items on display. No one could resist "spying" on what their colleagues in other companies
were doing to promote their libraries. Employment assistance was another new feature for this year.
Janet Weiss, Employment Chair, enlisted the services of several library agencies to provide resume
screening and counseling for prospective applicants, and those with open positions to fill were
encouraged to post job descriptions on the message board provided. Thanks to Wontawk, Library Co-op
and ProLibra for volunteering their services.
CapLits 6
All attendees and exhibitors got to let loose and boogey-oogey Monday night at our Club Polly Esther's
Dance Party, sponsored by Semio. No encouragement was needed to get folks out on the dance floor
and "grooving" to the sounds of the 70's.
An abundant and delicious buffet (and bar!) satisfied dancers and non-dancers alike and kept things
going until closing. Thanks to Karen Mirabile, Programming Chair, for organizing this fun-filled event.
On Tuesday morning, attendees had additional time to enjoy a hot breakfast, visit the exhibit area and
check out the Swap & Shop table before convening for the day's sessions. June Strupczewski, Director
of Information & Library Services at Aventis Pharmaceuticals, opened the panel session on portals with
her overview of the Aventis Global Information Portal. She described how an international team of
librarians and IT professionals built a global portal from scratch in less than one year. The team took an
inventory of all key electronic resources and developed a company-focused taxonomy and indexing
policy. June provided a live demonstration of the functionality and administrative tools. Renee
Guttmann, Manager of Biomedical and Business Information at Pharmacia, followed with her profile of
Pharmacia's Global Information Network (GIN) Portal. Following several mergers, the libraries were
charged with consolidating all of the local library web sites into one and eliminating duplicate purchasing
and redundancy. Using Plumtree software, the team was able to accomplish this in an astonishing 6
weeks. The portal provides global, 24/7 access to electronic journals, databases, current awareness
services and document requests, and the display can be customized according to user preference.
Jean Fisher, Director of eBusiness Product Development for Market Measures/Cozint, provided an
overview of the client service portal her company developed so that their customers could view
purchased reports and industry news. They also utilized Plumtree software as well as iTopics from
NewsEdge.
A topic of concern to many corporate libraries these days is marketing. How can we promote our
services and create more user awareness? In order to get some ideas, we asked a panel of experts to
share their thoughts and experiences. Sue Gleckner, Manager of Information Services at J&J's Personal
Products Company, presented her top 10 tips for promoting an information center. Her campaigns for
International Special Librarians Day were a definite crowd pleaser. Shannon Wally, Research Librarian
at MGI Pharma, told us how she turned a virtually non-existent library into a valued resource for the
entire company. Cathy Knee from Merck shared her experience of planning and executing a virtual open
house for her organization. To conclude our meeting, Kathy Dempsey, editor of Computers in Libraries
and Marketing Library Services, provided us with many more tips and ideas for "getting noticed".
The complete program, meeting photos, and all of the presentations mentioned in this article may be
viewed on the PH&T web site at: http://www.sla.org/division/dpht/spring02.htm.
Thanks to all of the meeting organizers, sponsors, moderators, volunteers and attendees who made the
2002 Spring Meeting a huge success.
See you in Los Angeles!
master's degree in chemistry. Lusi Wong was a librarian and received a UW mathematics degree in 1973.
The Lusi Wong Library will be prominently located in the college's new academic wing and will face the UW
campus. It will include a reading room and archival facility, an East Asian Studies Resource Centre and two small
group study rooms.
In making the gift, Wong said: "Lusi and I were both University of Waterloo graduates, and very much enjoyed our
time on campus. We are glad to be able to give something back to the university. I hope this donation will show our
appreciation and make a difference to current students and faculty." Joan McKinnon, Renison's local campaign
chair, said: "This very exciting gift is the largest in Renison's history. We are very grateful for Mr. Wong's generosity
because we realize the tremendous difference the new academic wing will make to students at Renison College
and the University of Waterloo." McKinnon added: "The library in particular will provide more student study carrels
and greater opportunity to access information quickly and easily on site. We look forward to the day when we are
able to cut the ribbon to this wonderful new facility."
Text Mining: A New Frontier for Pharmaceutical Research
Ronen Feldman
ClearForest Corporation
ronen@clearforest.com
ABSTRACT
The information age has made it easy to store large amounts of data. The proliferation of documents available on
the Web, on corporate intranets, on news wires, and elsewhere is overwhelming. However, while the amount of
data available to us is constantly increasing, our ability to absorb and process this information remains constant.
Search engines only exacerbate the problem by making more and more documents available in a matter of a few
key strokes. Text Mining is a new and exciting research area that tries to solve the information overload problem by
using techniques from data mining, machine learning, NLP, IR and knowledge management. Text Mining involves
the preprocessing of document collections (text categorization, term extraction, and information extraction), the
storage of the intermediate representations, the techniques to analyze these intermediate representations
(distribution analysis, clustering, trend analysis, association rules etc.) and visualization of the results.
2. Introduction
Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery seek to turn the vast amounts of data available in digital format into useful
knowledge. Classic Data Mining concentrates on structured data, stored in relational databases or in flat files.
However, it is now clear that only a small portion of the available information is in structured format. It is
estimated that up to 80% of the data available in digital format is non-structured data. Most notably, much of
information is available in textual form, with little or no formatting. Hence the growing interest in Text Mining,
which is the area within Data Mining that focuses on Data Mining from textual sources.
The first issue to address when performing Text Mining is to determine the underlying information on which the
Data Mining operations are applied. Our approach to text mining is based on extracting meaningful concepts that
annotate the documents. A typical text mining system begins with collections of raw documents, without any labels
or tags. Documents are first automatically labeled by categories, terms or entities extracted directly from the
documents. Next, the concepts and additional higher-level entities (that are organized in a hierarchical taxonomy)
are used to support a range of KDD operations on the documents. The frequency of co-occurrence of concepts can
provide the foundation for a wide range of KDD operations on collections of textual documents, such as finding
sets of documents whose concept distributions differ significantly from that of the full collection, other related
collections, or collections from other points in time.
A straightforward approach is to use the entire set of words in the documents as inputs to the Data Mining
algorithms. However, as was shown by Rajman and Besançon ([6]), the results of the mining process in this
approach are often rediscoveries of compound nouns (such as that “Wall” and “Street” or that “Ronald” and
“Reagan” often co-occur), or of patterns that are at too low a level to be significant (such as that “shares” and
“securities” co-occur).
A second approach ([3][4]) is to use tags associated with the documents, and to perform the Data Mining operations
on the tags. However, to be effective this requires:
• Manual tagging - which is unfeasible for large collections; or
• Automated tagging – using any one of the many automated categorization algorithms.
This approach suffers from two drawbacks. First, the number of distinct categories that such algorithms can
effectively handle is relatively small, thus limiting the broadness of the mining process. More importantly, the
process of automated categorization requires defining the categories a priori, thus defeating the purpose of
discovery within the actual text.
CapLits 20
A third approach is text mining via information extraction ([1][2][5][7][8][9]), whereby we first perform
information extraction on each document to find events, facts and entities that are likely to have meaning in the
given domain, and then perform the data mining operations on the extracted information. A possible “Event” may
be that a company has entered a joint venture, or has executed a management change. The extracted information
provides much more concise and precise data for the mining process, than in a word-based approach, and tends to
represent more meaningful concepts and relationships in the document’s domain. On the other hand, in contrast to
the tagging approach, the information-extraction method allows for mining of the actual information present within
the text, rather than the limited set of tags associated to the documents. Using the information extraction process,
the number of different relevant entities, Events and facts on which the data mining is performed is unbounded,
typically thousands or even millions, far beyond the number of tags which any automated tagging system could
handle.
While on a basic level one can rely on generic proper name recognition that is mostly domain-independent, the
power of this text mining approach is most apparent when coupled with extraction specific to the domain of
interest. Thus, for example, when mining a collection of financial news articles, we would want to extract pertinent
information on companies, industries and technologies - information such as mergers, acquisitions, management
positions etc.
We will start by describing the typical architecture of a text mining system. We will then describe a specific Text
Mining system that is able to visually display relationships between extracted entities.
1. Architecture of Text Mining Systems
A Text Mining system is composed of 3 major components:
1. Information Feeders: enable the connection between various textual collections and the tagging modules.
This component connects to any web site, streamed source (such a news feed), internal document
collections and any other types of textual collections.
2. Intelligent Tagging: A component responsible for reading the text and distilling (tagging) the relevant
information. This component can perform any type of tagging on the documents such as statistical tagging
(categorization and term extraction), semantic tagging (information extraction) and structural tagging
(extraction from the visual layout of documents).
3. Business Intelligence Suite: A component responsible for consolidating the information from disparate
sources, allowing for simultaneous analysis of the entire information landscape.
In addition the output of the tagging component can be fed into external systems such as corporate databases,
workflow systems or file systems. The tagging system is connected to the business intelligence suite or to the
external systems either by producing rich XML documents or by using an API (application programming interface)
that can connect directly to the internal data structures of the tagging process.
An example of such an XML document is shown in Figure 1. We can see several examples of annotation of
entities (like “inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitors” as a Concept Term, and “Alzheimer's disease” as a
DiseaseDisorder). Figure 1 - XML Annotation of an input document
A more detailed description of the intelligent tagging component is shown in Figure 3. Each of the taggers is using
a separate training module that is based on annotated examples. A more detailed discussion of the training modules
will be presented in the following sections. The training module for the structural tagging is producing document
signatures that are then saved and mapped against new documents. The training module for the statistical tagging is
producing classifiers for each of the categories and the training module for the semantic training is producing
information extraction rules based on annotated documents.
3. Visualizations and Analytics for Text Mining
When developing a text-mining system one of the crucial needs is the ability to browse through the document
collection and being able to “visualize” the various elements within the collection. This type of interactive
exploration enables one to identify new types of entities and relationships that can be extracted and, better explore
the results of the information extraction phase.
We provide example by using a visualization tool by ClearForest Corporation called ClearResearch. This tool
enables the user to visualize relationships between entities that were extracted from the documents. The system
enables to view collocations between entities or a semantic map that will show entities that are related by any of a
defined set (user definable) of relationships. Demonstrations of this product can be viewed at
4. Summary
Due to the abundance of available textual data, there is a growing need for efficient tools for Text Mining. Unlike
structured data, where the data mining algorithms can be performed directly on the underlying data, textual data
requires some preprocessing before the data mining algorithm can be successfully applied. Information Extraction
has proved to be an efficient method for this first preprocessing phase. Text mining based on Information
Extraction attempts to hit a midpoint, reaping some benefits from each of the extremes while avoiding many of
their pitfalls. On the one hand, there is no need for human effort in labeling documents, and we are not constrained
to a smaller set of labels that lose much of the information present in the documents. Thus the system has the
ability to work on new collections without any preparation, as well as the ability to merge several distinct
collections into one (even though they might have been tagged according to different guidelines which would
prohibit their merger in a tagged-based system). On the other hand, the number of meaningless results is greatly
reduced and the execution time of the mining algorithms is also reduced relative to pure word-based approaches.
Text mining using Information Extraction thus hits a useful middle ground on the quest for tools for understanding
the information present in the large amount of data that is only available in textual form. The powerful combination
of precise analysis of the documents and a set of visualization tools enable the user to easily navigate and utilize
very large document collections.
