his primary interest—horses—and the<br />

Burleson Animal Hospital eventually<br />

became known as the Burleson Equine<br />

Hospital.<br />

In 1986, Putnam decided that he<br />

and his fellow veterinarians needed to<br />

increase their skills in equine dentistry.<br />

He began studying the field and<br />

advised his colleagues to do the same,<br />

and he soon became one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

qualified veterinarians in the area in<br />

equine dentistry. He has also been<br />

instrumental in developing ultrasonography<br />

as a tool to predict ovulation<br />

in mares. Aside from equine dentistry<br />

and reproduction, he is known for his<br />

work in lameness and with miniature<br />

horses.<br />

Putnam has been a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong> Medical Association<br />

(TVMA) since 1960, served as<br />

president in 1997, and served in all<br />

chairs on the TVMA Executive Board.<br />

During his TVMA Presidency, Putnam<br />

initiated the formation <strong>of</strong> the Southwest<br />

<strong>Veterinary</strong> Symposium (SWVS),<br />

and he worked with TVMA to resolve<br />

equine dentistry issues in <strong>Texas</strong>. He is<br />

also an active member in the American<br />

<strong>Veterinary</strong> Medical Association<br />

(AVMA), the American Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Equine Practitioners (AAEP), and<br />

the <strong>Texas</strong> A&M Association <strong>of</strong> Former<br />

Students Century Club. He was president<br />

<strong>of</strong> the American Cutting Horse<br />

Association in 1986. He has served as<br />

president <strong>of</strong> the Central <strong>Texas</strong> Polled<br />

Hereford Association and president <strong>of</strong><br />

the Tarrant County <strong>Veterinary</strong> Medical<br />

Association.<br />

Putnam has been honored with numerous<br />

awards throughout his career.<br />

Most recently, he received the Visionary<br />

Award from SWVS in 2006. In<br />

1993, he was named Equine Practitioner<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Year by the TVMA. The Morris<br />

Animal Foundation honored him<br />

with the <strong>Veterinary</strong> State Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

the Year award in 1985.<br />

Putnam has served as a leader in his<br />

local community and at his alma mater<br />

for many years. He has been a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong><br />

& Biomedical Sciences Development<br />

Council since 1996, and he became<br />

a Mark Francis Fellow in 1995. In<br />

1986, he became the president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Burleson Area Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce.<br />

He was the organizing director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

First National Bank <strong>of</strong> Burleson, and<br />

he served as its first treasurer in 1980.<br />

In 1977, he was appointed to the Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> Cleburne Savings and<br />

Loan. For many years, he served on the<br />

Burleson Independent School Board,<br />

where he was president for two years.<br />

As evidence <strong>of</strong> his dedication to youth,<br />

he was named an Honorary Chapter<br />

Farmer by the Burleson FFA chapter.<br />

Putnam is married to Janie Putnam.<br />

He has two sons, his wife has two<br />

daughters, and they enjoy spending<br />

time with their grandchildren.<br />

Dr. Ronald O. Stried, ’71<br />

Austin, <strong>Texas</strong><br />

As a mentor and advocate for veterinary<br />

medicine, Dr. Ronald O. Stried<br />

has faithfully served his pr<strong>of</strong>ession for<br />

more than 40 years.<br />

After graduation, Stried practiced<br />

at the Austin Cat & Dog Hospital for<br />

nine years, becoming the owner <strong>of</strong> the<br />

practice from 1980 to 1995. In 1986, he<br />

established the Tangelwood Pet Hospital,<br />

also in Austin, <strong>Texas</strong>. In 2002, he<br />

became the medical director <strong>of</strong> VCA<br />

Tanglewood Animal Hospital, where<br />

he currently works.<br />

Stried’s commitment to veterinary<br />

medicine extends beyond his clinical<br />

and administrative experiences.<br />

Since 1971, he has been a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong> Medical Association<br />

(TVMA) where he has played<br />

an active role as president, treasurer,<br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors,<br />

district director, co-chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

VAL conference, and chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Ethics and Grievance Committee. He is<br />

also the TVMA <strong>Veterinary</strong> Political Action<br />

Committee Chair. He is currently<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> the American <strong>Veterinary</strong><br />

Medical Association (AVMA), the Capital<br />

Area <strong>Veterinary</strong> Medical Associa-<br />

tion, <strong>of</strong> which he was president in 1975,<br />

and the American Animal Hospital<br />

Association (AAHA), for which he was<br />

area representative from 1986 to 1994.<br />

He was the treasurer <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong><br />

Medical Foundation from 1994<br />

until 2008. He was also the president <strong>of</strong><br />

the Austin Woods and Waters Association<br />

in 1990.<br />

Stried also spent several years helping<br />

to form the Southwest <strong>Veterinary</strong><br />

Symposium (SWVS), for which he<br />

served as the TVMA delegate. He has<br />

been the president <strong>of</strong> the organization.<br />

Stried has been recognized with<br />

many awards for his dedication and<br />

commitment to veterinary medicine.<br />

The TVMA named him Companion<br />

Animal Practitioner <strong>of</strong> the Year in<br />

1990. In 1996, the AAHA Western<br />

Region named him Outstanding<br />

Practitioner <strong>of</strong> the Year and in 2009, he<br />

was presented with the SWVS Visionary<br />

Award.<br />

He has been married to Janice Brunner<br />

since 1967, and they have one son,<br />

a grandson, and a granddaughter. In<br />

his leisure time, Stried enjoys going to<br />

his ranch and spending as much time<br />

outdoors as possible. He also enjoys<br />

woodworking and metalcrafting.<br />

Dr. Michael A. Walker, ’72<br />

<strong>College</strong> Station, <strong>Texas</strong><br />

As a mentor to residents, graduate<br />

students, and hundreds <strong>of</strong> veterinary<br />

students, Dr. Michael A. Walker has<br />

changed the veterinary pr<strong>of</strong>ession for<br />

the past 40 years through his teaching,<br />

research, and writing.<br />

After graduating with his DVM,<br />

Walker completed a residency in<br />

radiology at the University <strong>of</strong> Georgia.<br />

He then joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> Ohio<br />

State University as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>es
