sor in 1975. In 1976, he moved to the
University of Tennessee as an assistant
professor. During his 12-year career
at the University of Tennessee, he was
promoted to professor and radiology
section head. He returned to the Texas
A&M College of Veterinary Medicine &
Biomedical Sciences (CVM) in 1989 as
a professor and radiology section head.
After almost 40 years of teaching, he
retired in 2009.
Walker is a diplomate of the American
College of Veterinary Radiology
(ACVR) and of the ACVR Subspecialty
of Radiation Oncology. Widely
regarded as one of the fathers of his
field, he has authored or co-authored
more than 80 reviewed publications,
more than 30 book chapters, and other
articles on radiologic diagnosis, special
procedures, and radiation treatment
of cancer. He also has served on two
editorial boards: as a reviewer for the
Journal of the American Veterinary
Medical Association and associate
editor of the Veterinary Radiology and
Ultrasound Journal.
To strengthen his teaching and collaborations
within the industry, Walker
has been active in the ACVR. He was
president in 1989 and served on several
committees. He also served as the
MMuster is one of the most powerful
traditions at Texas A&M University.
This annual memorial service occurs
on April 21 around the world as Aggies
come together to honor Aggies who
have passed.
Dr. Guy Sheppard, Director of
Development and Alumni Relations
at the Texas A&M University College
of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical
Sciences (CVM), spoke at Muster in
Palestine, Texas, in 2011.
“To me, it gave me a sense of belonging,
and it still gives me a sense of belonging.
That when you’re gone, you’re
not forgotten and that other Aggies
remember you,” Sheppard said.
Sheppard said Muster is one of the
greatest traditions at A&M, and is a
huge part of his life. He has been attending
Muster since he was a freshman
in 1973. Since then, he has missed
only one Muster. Sheppard was also the
chairman of Muster for San Angelo,
Texas, for several years and helped
organize Musters when he was in the
president of the radiation oncology sub
college of the ACVR in 2002.
Walker’s many awards and honors
reflect his impact on veterinary
medicine. He was inducted into three
honor societies throughout his career:
the Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society
in 1975, the Gamma Sigma Delta
Agriculture Honor Society in 1986,
and the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society
for International Scholars in 1994. In
1997 and 2007, he was awarded the
Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital
Service Award at the CVM. He was also
honored with the Dean’s Impact Award
in 2005.
Walker is among a select few who
managed to make a sizable contribution
to the body of research literature
while developing and actively working
in two concurrent clinical services,
diagnostic radiology and radiation
oncology.
Walker was married to his high
school sweetheart, Christie, until she
passed away in 2005. Together they
have four children, three of them
Aggies. Walker enjoys golf, running,
teaching Sunday school, and spending
time with his precious grandchildren.
He is truly a gentle man and a
gentleman.
Army at Fort Sill, OK. Besides speaking
this past year, he also spoke at the 2010
Muster in Wichita, KS.
“So, I went to Wichita, KS and spoke
in 2010, and when I got back, they
asked if I’d mind putting my name on
the speaker resource list at the Association
of Former Students. I did and the
Muster chairman of Palestine sent me
an email. So I guess he got my name
off the list,” he said.
Sheppard said his experience as a
speaker was more meaningful than as
an attendee.
“I feel like I got more out of the
Muster…when I spoke at it than when
I participated. I know in preparing my
talk and looking at what I wanted to
talk about, it stirred a lot of memories
for me. It was very meaningful to me,”
he said.
In his speech, Sheppard explained
the importance Muster has played in
his life since he first stepped foot on
A&M’s campus until today. He talked
about several memorable events in his
