• Collect all data (GMP & non-GMP) 

– Process, Alarm & Events, Batch Events 

• Deliver a consistent infrastructure globally 

– no differentiation from Commercial to R&D 

• Provide common visualisation (thick & thin clients) 

– Consolidated data visualization for improved process 

monitoring and historical batch analysis 

– Consolidated alarm reporting for building management, process 

control, laboratory equipment, utility systems, warehouse 

equipment… 

• Targeted compliant reporting (RtReports) 

– Autoclaves, washers (non-MES related!)

Enterprise Agreement 

• Dec ’08, Signed a J&J wide Enterprise Agreement (EA) 

with OSIsoft for the provision of their PI Infrastructure 

in a cost effective manner. 

• Currently 3 agreed EA categories negotiated, namely 

– API manufacturing (Biologics or Chemical) 

– Development (Biologics or Chemical) 

– Fill Finish / Packaging 



Enterprise Agreement - Benefits 

• Licensing flexibility allows for better engineering 

decisions 

• Cost certainty leads to easier project justification 

• Partnership with the OSIsoft CoE and TQS creates: 

– Standard approach to system design and deployment 

– Opportunities for a leveraged approach (validation protocols) 

– Capability to diagnose and fix support issues 

• J&J forum assembled, led by Marcel Bakker, with 

participation from all sites, OSIsoft & TQS to ensure 

best practice sharing

Introducing Asset Framework 

• What is PI Asset Framework ? 

– A database of user configured “Process Object Models” called 

elements which represent the logical components in your 

process. 

– Allows data from multiple PI servers to be combined in one 

common view. 

– Allows the user access to non PI data sources, e.g. external 

databases. 

– Allows process specialists to build process relative models 

without the need for extensive PI system knowledge.

PI AF - Components 

• Elements – can be either physical or logical entities. 

• Attributes – 

– Provide a place to store data within an element. 

– Data can be retrieved from PI server, external data sources, 

formulas. 

• Element Templates - a template that allow you to 

define a set of base Attributes that can be reused. 



PI AF – J&J Pharma 

• Super Class concept 

– Unit based template e.g Bioreactor defined by R&D. 

– Used as a base template in site instance. 

– Ensures that the entire organisation have a common taxonomy. 

• MES \ AF 

– Using Unit based templates allows us to build unit based MBR 

elements that can be applied on other sites.

• PI Notifications – Alerting platform based on PI AF. 

– Notification can be based on simple or complex. 

– Alert 

• Event Frames – New PI Batch.

PAS|X – PI AF


• Each PCS System has an unique id. 

• All elements associated with a system will have this 

id. 




• Upload of PCS Elements per system. 




• PCS Element configuration. 

– AF Templates and attributes are uploaded. 

– AF Unit Class and Attributes are assigned automatically.


• PCS MBR elements 

– Building blocks for modellers. 

– Based on the unit class.


• MBR generation 

– Alias Resolution – Unit name set via formula. During run time 

unit name is linked to AF attribute to allow lookup and retrieval 

of PI data. 




• EBR – executed instance of the MBR. 

– Required process value is captured from PI automatically, at 

the required time.
