DPD16 Adaptive & Informative Skin
In old nature the appearance of product is often highly informative on
its functioning. Take for instance of a banana: you can buy a banana
when it is still green, and it is already possible to eat it. But when you
wait for the banana to turn yellow, before eating it, its taste will be
completely different. You can choose the proper moment of eating
yourself, when you like the taste of the banana best. The visual
appearance of the banana is more than ‘just a skin’. It is actually
meaningful and provides you with information on how the banana will
taste. In this project we will transfer this principle to product design –
think e.g. of the casing of cellphones.
DPD24 Nano Supermarket
The NANO Supermarket presents speculative nanotech products that
may hit the shelves within the next ten years: medicinal candy,
interactive wall paint, a programmable wine, invisible security spray
and much more. It lets people experience the potential impact of
nanotechnology on our everyday lives. It aims to fascilitate debate on
emerging technologies through speculative design.
Based upon contemporary nanotechnological trends, we ask you to
design new products, systems or services for the general public for
the year 2020. Your design should address both the promises as well
as the potential dangers of nanotechnoly.
DPD26 Record of your Life
During the course of history a wide variety of musical
instruments has been developed. From violin, to rhythm guitar,
to beat box machine, instruments allow musicians to ‘control’
their sound in a certain specific manner. The aim of the project
is to develop a musical instrument that is more than merely a
tool, but rather an autonomous partner of the musician. During
its use, it grows along with the performer. Client is Steim, the
Amsterdam based center for research & development of
electronic performance instruments & tools.
DPD29 Re-Light My Fire
Recently Phillips founded a research lab for designers and developers
with a focus on oled technology. Phillip developed a modular set of
hard and software to experiment with this new technology.
Furthermore Phillips expanded its lightning an design department with
the acquisition of a mayor Italian lightning design brand Luceplan to
express their ambition into the development of light objects for our
living environment.
In this project, you will get access to the technology and are invited to
explore the design space and create a visionairy prototype that
demonstrates the future of light.
We will use the components provided by Philips to build our ideas on.
DPD36 Food Technology
Food and food production have been key-elements in societal
change, for instance the transition hunter/gatherer to agriculture and
the infuence of fertilizer on industrial development. Food is also about
the last connection of human kind to old (cultivated) nature.
Developments in food; like understanding cooking chemistry and food
technology have led to new opportunities like molecular gastronomy,
industrialized food production, re-shaping meat through enzyms and
(in the future perhaps) printing food. This opens the doors for Next
Nature and our designers. An investigation in local vs global,
changing eating rituals and Designers’ Food/ Food Design, or in short
and Sigma. PPG is at the forefront of developing new products
to meet constantly evolving market demands. We ask you to
combine future trends with new technologies and to translate
them into new future coating concepts aiming at the mass
market for PPG. You can use any media to embody your design
(physical models, graphics, video’s, interactive installations,
augmented reality etc.).
