PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
September 2011/Elul 5771 – Tishrei 5772
Volume 14, Number 1
As I write this message, it is only early August, but
Ilan’s new board of officers has already met and has
begun planning our programs and fundraisers for the
2011-2012 Hadassah year. Next year we will be
celebrating Hadassah’s 100 th birthday. In honor of this
monumental occasion, Hadassah will be holding its
Centennial Convention in Jerusalem October 15-18, at
which time the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital
Tower will be dedicated. For those members who have
never visited Israel and/or have never attended a
Hadassah convention, this is the time to experience
both! Additionally, for those women who have not yet
become life members themselves and/or have not given
the gift of life membership to their loved ones, 2011 is
the year to do so. Hadassah’s Centennial Life Member
celebration special is only $100 for the remainder of this
calendar year and will end December 31. You don’t
want to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime offer!
Looking ahead to this September, Sharon and I hope to
welcome many members at our opening program, which
will be held on Wednesday, September 21. The holiday
of Rosh Hashanah will begin a week later on
Wednesday, September 28. Just as we celebrate the
Jewish New Year with the hope that we will be granted
goodness and sweetness in the coming year, so we
celebrate the beginning of the new Hadassah year with
the hope that we will be successful in all our goals for
the coming year. With your help, we look forward to
celebrating another meaningful and fulfilling year in
Hadassah Hospital Linda Silverstein and Mimi Meltzer, Education VPs
The new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower will be dedicated in October 2012 at the Ein
Kerem Campus of Hadassah during the Centennial National Convention in Jerusalem,
The Tower is named after the mother of Bill Davidson. Sarah was a devoted supporter and member
of Hadassah. Bill Davidson pledged $75 million toward the building. He was the owner of the
Detroit Pistons and built his fortune through Guardian Glass.
The building includes 14 stories above ground and five below, 500 beds, 60 intensive-care units,
and 20 underground operating rooms, as well as an ultramodern heart unit. The newest
technologies will be used to unlock the mysteries and secrets of many diseases.
Hadassah has always been dedicated, not only to the medical concerns and needs of patients, but
also to helping them and their families understand new technologies, research, and the art of
healing.
For nearly 100 years, Hadassah Hospitals have been leaders in all aspects of medicine, research,
and patient care in Israel. Now, with the addition of the Tower, so much more is feasible.
All who have reached out and supported the Tower should feel a special part of this wonderful
medical center. Don’t we all wish that we could be there for the dedication?
Fundraising Linda Hertz and Sandy Stein, Fundraising VPs
Thank you for your contributions to a very successful Yard Sale this past June. We raised more
than $700 to help Hadassah fund its projects. We hope to sponsor a special night at a local
restaurant in the fall and will again print our “Passover Cookbook” (3 rd edition) in the spring. If
you have any suggestions for a place to gift wrap this holiday season, please give us a call.
We encourage you to support our upcoming programs, trips, and game night; to purchase Hadassah
cards and certificates as well as Entertainment Books; and to attend “Hadassah Presents” on
November 6.
We are always striving to put the “fun” in our fundraising. If you have any suggestions for an
activity or a clever or “must-have” item that we might sell for a profit, please let us know.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our functions!
