Two things were very big in the news in early December before I left on my trip. Hurricane Sandy and the cease fire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip. One item that touches on both these matters did not reach many people’s attention. Israel sent volunteers to the parts of New York and New Jersey devastated by super storm Sandy and this in the midst of the worst flare-up between of the Israel and Hamas in four years. Perhaps the numbers weren’t as great as aid pouring in from other quarters, but it was real, it was there and it was needed. The groups that helped were IsraAID led by Shahar Zahari, the same group that was first on the ground after the Haiti earthquake and alumni of Mechina Ein Prat, a pre-army academy and Israeli and Jewish identity program that seeks to prepare recent high school graduates for service in the Israeli army’s Elite units. More than ever, Hadassah needs your support page 2 Israel helping the U.S., who ever heard of such a thing? But they were there doing what they know how to do best, helping with disaster relief wherever it is needed. Israel is a grown up country now and aid goes both ways. When we give to Hadassah the aid also goes both ways. We not only assure topnotch health care in Israel, but also push forward the frontiers of medical science which helps us all. By treating all comers regardless of their ethnic or national origin we set an example to the whole world. Sometimes that comes back to help us. Two additional teas are scheduled: Thursday, January 24, at 6 pm (Louise Chatlynne); and Monday, March 11 at noon (Lin Solomon). Those who attended the HS October meeting have been assigned to one of these. If you are not scheduled to attend one, or need to change your assignment, you may still do so. Our goal is to get to know one another better; there is no agenda or fundraising planned. You are encouraged to bring someone who might want to join Hannah Senesch. Our Chairs Ann Barcome and Sue Ellen Hersh would like a representative from each group to be a part of the committee. It doesn't have to be someone who is on your board or will even participate in the walkathon (though hopefully they will), just someone who can bring the information back to your group.
