Before You Arrive
7
August is just around the corner and soon you will be packing
your bags for your new home away from home. There are
just a few things you will want to know and complete before
you get here. If you have questions, this Move-In Guide will
surely have the answers. Read on, and get excited to live on
campus as a WSU Warrior!
ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION
Your room assignment has been provided in the letter along
with this move-in guide. You can view who your roommate/
suitemate(s) are by going to the housing website at www.
housing.wayne.edu and clicking on the “Assignment and
Roommates” icon. You will need to log into our housing
student web, using your Access ID and Pipeline password.
Once you are logged in, you can click on your room/
apartment number and view the names and WSU email
addresses of your roommate/suitemates. In the event that
you have not yet been assigned a roommate/suitemate,
check back again soon. Someone is likely to be assigned to
you prior to move-in.
You are encouraged to contact your roommate/suitemate
prior to moving in to coordinate what you will be bringing
Making a List, Checking It
Twice — What You Need
to Know
with you. It is recommended that you also frequently check
your WSU email in case your roommate/suitemate is trying to
get in touch with you.
THINGS TO COORDINATE WITH YOUR ROOMMATE
Once you have contacted your new roommate/suitemate(s)
you should begin discussing what items each of you plan to
bring to campus for your new room. It’s helpful to coordinate
with one another to avoid having duplicate items that you
may be willing to share to save space. Most students find
that duplicate items take up valuable space in their rooms/
apartments. Begin the conversation early about using each
other’s things. For example: if you plan to share cleaning
supplies, how will you equally replenish them throughout the
year when you are running low. Below are a few items most
students find it best to coordinate:
• Microwave
• Refrigerator
• TV, coaxial cable and DVD player
• Wastebasket and trash bags
• Cleaning supplies, including a
broom, dustpan, and mop
*students are responsible
for cleaning their own rooms
• Desk or floor lamps
*no overhead lighting in
most rooms
• Shower curtain
• Bath mats
ROOM AND MEAL PLAN CHANGES
Students who are interested in a room change or meal
plan change can participate in our Open Room/Meal Plan
Change Period. This period is held from September 12th-19th.
Students can pick up a Room Change or Meal Plan Change
form from their building’s front desk at the start of this
period on September 12th.
If participating in the room change process, students are
encouraged to find other students willing to complete a
room swap, as space is extremely limited. If they are unable
to find someone to swap with, we will do our best to
accommodate requests, if the space permits.
Meal plan changes can also be made online at our application
site up until July 29th. Beginning August 1st students will
need to email housingassignments@wayne.edu to change
their meal plan. All first-year freshmen students are required
to have either the 15 Meal Plan or the Warrior Pass. After
August 17th, students will not be able to change their meal
plans until the Open Meal Plan Change Period.
Learning Communities provide academic
support and social/fun activities focused
on a specific course or major. In Learning
Communities, small groups of students
with similar interests work closely together
as a “community of learners”. LC students
study, socialize and problem-solve together,
alongside advanced student (peer) mentors
and a faculty advisor. We have over 40
Learning Communities available for a wide
variety of majors and interests. Take a look
at our list online, and then contact the LC
Coordinator to join. It’s that easy!
Visit www.lcwayne.edu for more information
on how to join a Learning Community.
LIVING WITH A ROOMMATE
For many students, this is their first time living with a
roommate/suitemates. This often means not only sharing
a refrigerator or TV remote, but learning to live in a single
space with another person. Here are some tips:
Arrange your room, TOGETHER. This helps everyone feel at
home. When you want to change things around, talk to your
roommate first.
Communicate. Talking things over with your roommate
ahead of time is necessary for living together. Take your
Packing It All Up
What to bring to your home away from home
What to leave behind
What furniture we provide
Roommate Agreement seriously when filling it out after you
move in. Roommate Agreements are provided to you by your
RA after you have moved in.
Respect each other and your belongings. Ask before you
use something, and respect your roommates time and space.
Be ready to compromise. It is important to know when
to be flexible and when to stand your ground. If something
is bothering you, go to your roommate—not your parent,
friend who lives down the hall or writing about it in your
Facebook status or on Twitter.
Keep your room safe. Remember to lock the door, be
responsible with your keys and follow the housing policies
set in place in the Community Living Guide.
Connect with your roommate. You don’t have to be best
friends with your college roommate, but take the time to get
to know him/her and perhaps, find something that you both
have in common with each other.
PACKING AND MOVE-IN TIPS
We asked some of the “pros” who have lived on campus
before about what advice they give to a new student moving
in for the first time. Here’s what they said!
“Make a list of what you are bringing to campus and then
double check that list before leaving home to make sure you
don’t leave anything behind.”
Deciding What to Pack
Students tend to over pack when moving to campus. The
list that follows details some things that you may want to
consider bringing, as well as some things not permitted in
the residence halls/apartments. Many students will bring the
things they are going to use right away with them and then
later trade things out at home during a weekend home or
the Thanksgiving/Semester break periods. For example, you
most likely won’t need a winter coat until November, so you
could leave that at home in August and bring it later in the
year. Throughout the year, you might also choose to bring
certain items home to lighten the load for when you move
back home in May.
Check-in Information
11
When you pull up to the curb, WSU will be waiting to
welcome you with open arms. You will hand over your checkin
pass which is your golden ticket to moving in. You will need
to show it before you unload your car and pick up your room
key. Be sure you have some kind of photo id with you to pick
up your room/apartment key. Campus will be hopping with
exciting move-in events for you to enjoy. Before you know it,
you will be comfortably stretched out on your bed chatting it
up with your roommate in your new room.
WHAT IS A CHECK-IN PASS?
A Check-in Pass is a post-card that will be sent to students
via postal mail or their WSU email after they have been
financially cleared to move in. To be financially cleared
students must pay their entire university balance or be able
to show they will have the funds available through a payment
plan or with an accepted financial aid package.
It is important that you have your Check-In Pass available
when you arrive to campus. You will be required to show
your Pass before you begin unloading your car. Passes are
also used to identify your eligibility to receive your room key.
FREE PARKING ON MOVE-IN DAY
Parking Structure 2 will be open and available on move-in
day, free of charge. Friends and family are welcome to park
there while helping you move-in. For any oversized vehicles,
such as moving trucks, towing trailers and etc, the open
surface lot #41, located in front of Structure 2, will be open.
It is important that you unload your belongings quickly onto
the curb and then move your vehicle(s) immediately to the
structure or open surface lot to keep traffic moving efficiently
on Anthony Wayne Drive.
GETTING TO WSU
What to Expect When
You Arrive
It is recommended that all students, friends and family
participating in move-in utilize Google Maps or Mapquest to
get personal directions from their home address. Please use
the following destination address:
5110 Anthony Wayne Drive
Detroit, MI 48202
As a reminder, don’t forget to check on traffic or
construction delays before you make the trip to campus. If
you are unfamiliar with the area, once you arrive to Anthony
Wayne Drive, you will notice signs and staff that are prepared
to direct you to where you need to go to start moving in.
UNLOADING YOUR STUFF
Limited carts will be available for your use; however it is
recommended that you pack light to be able to carry any
bags or boxes to your room if needed. You may also want to
consider bringing your own hand truck if you have one.
You can pull up to the curb in one of our drop off lanes on
Anthony Wayne Drive from Warren to unload.
Lane 1: Use this lane to pull up, quickly unload your
belongings onto the curb and immediately move your car to
Structure 2 or Surface lot #41.
Warren
Lane 2: Use this lane for through traffic. Friends or families
that have driven separately to help you move should proceed
directly to Structure 2 or Surface lot #41
EARLY ARRIVALS
If you need to arrive early to campus for an academic or
university related reason, please email housingassignment@
wayne.edu. Please note that there is an additional cost to
arrive early at $20/night. Early arrivals will only be granted
when the space is available to students who are required to
be on campus prior to their scheduled move-in date.
CURRENT SUMMER RESIDENTS
If you are currently living in Atchison Hall as a spring/summer
resident and are taking classes this summer you are able
to remain in your currently assigned space until your new
space is ready. On or before August 20th, you will receive
notification of when you can begin moving to your new fall/
winter space.
CHECK-IN TIMES
It is our goal to make the move-in process as smooth and
enjoyable as possible. To do so we need you to move in
during your designated time so that we can avoid as much
congestion in the check-in lines and elevators as possible. We
understand that it may not be possible for you to move in at
your designated time, but we do ask for you to move in as
close to your time as possible for the benefit of all.
Building Staff and Services
13
HALL/APARTMENT STAFF
Community Directors and Resident Directors: They are
professional, live-in staff members who are responsible for
the overall management of each residence hall/apartment
building. They supervise the Resident Advisors, provide
support to all residents in their building and rotate as night
and weekend on call emergency responders.
Resident Advisors: RA’s are sophomore students or upper
class students who have previously lived on campus. They
live on each floor and are trained in conflict mediation,
building community and emergency response to assist
residents. You can meet your RA at check-in and your
required first floor meetings. Get to know your RA, it will
make a big difference.
Maintenance and Housekeeping Staff: These are staff
members in the buildings that take great pride in our halls
and apartments. You may find yourself in contact with
these individuals on a daily basis and you are encouraged
to say hello as they clean common areas and perform
regular building maintenance. Many residents develop great
relationships with these staff members.
Front Desk Staff: These are staff and students who are the
smiling faces at the front desk of each building. They monitor
who comes and goes in and out of the building 24 hours a
day! They also assist in mail services, sign in guests and take
in any reports of maintenance concerns.
You may already be thinking, “where can I find my favorite
candy bar or bag of chips?” In a few weeks you may be in
search of where to wash your clothes. Luckily, we can tell
you now where to find these amenities. Once you have
received your OneCard, you can start loading money onto it
immediately at www.onecard.wayne.edu/add.php.
VENDING MACHINES
Safety and Security
By keeping you prepared and informed, Wayne State
University has many resources available for students to make
campus a safe and secure environment. Whether you are
coming and going from campus buildings or walking across
campus; safety precautions are always in place.
Review the campus safety tips below and make yourself
aware of some of our security processes that you will
participate in as a new resident to the campus community.
CAMPUS SAFETY TIPS
• Always lock your room door whenever you are leaving your
room, even if it is just to go down the hall.
• Never prop or leave an exterior door open. It can
jeopardize the safety of all students living in the building.
• If you lose your room/apartment key, report it immediately
to the front desk and to your roommate/suitemates.
• If you encounter an unauthorized person in the building,
contact a staff member or Public Safety immediately.
• When parking your car keep everything, even of minimal
value, in your trunk that you are not taking with you.
• When walking, keep your head up to remain more alert of
your surroundings. Do not use your cell phone to talk or
text.
• Program ICE (in case of emergency) into your cell phone
for emergency personal to be able to contact someone in
the event you are unable to use your cell phone.
• Do not list your specific room or cell phone number on any
social networking sites, like Facebook. Also do not post
where you are headed on Facebook or Twitter.
• Be conscious when posting status updates on Facebook
and Twitter about where you are headed.
• When a fire alarm sounds in a building, all residents are
required to vacate the building, even if you think it’s a drill
or false alarm, it may not be.
ONECARD IDENTIFICATION
Housing facilities are restricted to residents, university
employees and registered guests. Your OneCard establishes
your affiliation with WSU and is not transferable. Students
should not lend their OneCard to another person for any
purpose, including entry to the building, purchasing of
meals, vending items or anything else that can be purchased
with your OneCard. If you lose your OneCard, be sure to
immediately deactivate your OneCard on Pipeline.
SECURITY MONITORS
Security Monitors are stationed in each of the halls and
apartments at the front lobby during high traffic late night
hours. The monitors assist the front desk staff with checking
ID’s and ensuring that guests are registered.
BUILDING/ROOM ACCESS
Residence halls and apartments are locked 24 hours a day
and require your OneCard for entry to your building.
EMERGENCY BLUE LIGHTS
There are more than 100 emergency blue light telephones
located across campus, its perimeter and within parking
facilities. The phones are highly visible and are programmed
to contact WSU Public Safety at the touch of a button.
HALL STICKERS
Each residence hall/apartment building has a unique sticker
that is placed on the resident’s OneCard for where they live.
Students are required to show this sticker on their OneCard
when they enter their building.
BROADCAST MESSAGING
The University has a broadcast messaging service that
can send you an email or text message for class change
information, snow days or technology outages on campus.
To opt into the system go to your Pipeline account to adjust
which messages you receive.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: EVERYONE’S
RESPONSIBILITY
Wayne State University and our residence hall staff prioritize
safety and security of our community members. We
continually plan for issues or concerns, however unlikely
that may arise during the academic year. Wayne State also
encourages individual community members and their families
to make plans and preparations for their personal safety and
accommodations. We have included a variety of resources
DINING EVENTS
Eating On Campus
Something for every taste bud
Throughout the year AVI Fresh hosts a variety of special
events in the dining halls. Last year the dining hall sponsored
many fun activities and meals. Students took a Tropical Get-
Away to paradise complete with Luau foods and decorations.
In February, they got together with friends to watch the
Super Bowl. Around Valentine’s Day, AVI Fresh also held a
candy guessing contest for students to win prizes if they
correctly guessed the correct of conversation hearts in
the jar. During the month of April, they put their focus on
sustainability and featured a Love the Earth Week. They
even hosted several culinary-themed dinners with different
international cuisine options in the dining halls during select
meals. A student favorite was the Platinum Chef Competition
where students cheered on the participants as they cooked
up some great dishes. You can find more information about
what AVI Fresh is cooking up this semester when you arrive
to campus and visit dining.
We believe that good nutrition and expanded culinary
horizons contribute to student success. We have classic
American favorites as well as internationally influenced
cuisine like Middle Eastern, Indian, Latin, Mediterranean,
Eastern European and Asian. Not only is there endless
“all you care to eat” variety, but meal plan holders can
also enjoy “live action” foods being prepared to order.
In addition, we are very excited to introduce an all new
dining platform at the Ghafari Hall eatery this fall - a 100%
vegetarian concept which will also be certified kosher
dairy. Diners will have vegan and gluten free options.
Towers Cafe is transitioning to serving halal meats and
poultry in its menu offerings. The dining halls are open for
Parent and Family
Information
As your child or loved one is becoming excited with
anticipation of this independent venture of moving to
college you may start to have mixed feelings about him/her
moving out. Letting go is never easy, however, when met
with encouragement and support it can result in a successful
experience for everyone involved.
Now that the countdown has begun, it is time to begin
preparing your student for the next chapter in their life.
During these last few days or weeks at home, have some of
the following conversations with your student.
• Show your student how to do laundry and manage their
finances.
• Create a list of serial numbers of any items they might be
bringing to campus with them.
• Encourage your student to limit what they bring with them,
as there are no storage spaces available in the residence
halls or apartments.
• Review financial aid, housing and dining contracts and
other campus policies in the Community Living Guide that
can be found online.
As you pull away from the curb on move-in day, know that
your student still needs you. They will still call asking for
advice or sometimes just for the positive affirmation that
they will succeed. They will encounter new experiences and
challenges and as parents or family members it is important
to trust that the values that you have instilled in them over
the years will be unpacked in their new home away from
home. And just when you think they won’t be coming back...
think again! They’ll be back for that favorite home-cooked
meal or to do so some laundry in a few weeks. And you will
have to admit you will miss them when they leave all over
again.
WHAT’S A FERPA?
FERPA is the Federal Rights and Privacy Act. Every college
student is protected by this as of 1974. This act prohibits
anyone other than the student from gaining access
to information regarding grades, housing or financial
information unless they are specified by name on a FERPA
release form. Students can give parents or other family
members permission to access this Information by filling
out this form. However, we recommend that you receive
this information directly from your student. Additional
information can be found at http://parents.wayne.edu/ferpa.
CONVERSATION STARTERS
It is important to open the communication lines with your
college student before they move out. You may see that your
relationship with them will change as they are starting their
college adventure. One thing to chat with your student about
is safety and security. Wayne State takes this very seriously.
All residence halls and apartments have secure access
helpful tips and topics to address with your student before
coming to campus.
• Update emergency contact information on Pipeline.
• Add at least 3 emergency contacts with Housing in our
Student Web Portal.
• Discuss how to safely get home at night.
• Become familiar with WSU’s Campus Health Center in case
of illness and University Pharmacy for prescriptions.
• Review policies in the Community Living Guide they are
held accountable to.
• Talk about making smart decisions, like locking the door
whenever they leave their room/apartment.
Living in the Heart
of the City
Wayne State is also home to many Division I and II sports
teams. The WSU fields and courts are just steps away from
campus housing. Almost all WSU sporting events are free to
students with their OneCard.
On weekends students can discover music festivals like the
Detroit Electronic Music Festival and the annual Hoedown
at Hart Plaza. If you have a passport or enhanced drivers
license Canada, is only a bridge or tunnel away to take in the
experience of another country that’s close to home. Students
can also find cultural experiences while feasting on a great
meal in Greektown or Mexican Village. In the winter students
can visit Campus Martius Park where you can slip on a pair
of ice skates and skate next to the City of Detroit’s holiday
tree. While you are downtown, check out the Hard Rock Café
nearby.
