When Kid’s Go to College: A Parent’s Guide to Changing
Relationships by Barbara and Phillip Newman
CONVERSATION STARTERS
It is important to open the communication lines with your
college student before they move out. You may see that your
relationship with them will change as they are starting their
college adventure. One thing to chat with your student about
is safety and security. Wayne State takes this very seriously.
All residence halls and apartments have secure access
entryways and are monitored by staff 24/7. Students can only
access their assigned building by swiping their OneCard.
It is valuable to speak with your student about being
prepared and making smart decisions. Below are a few
helpful tips and topics to address with your student before
coming to campus.
• Update emergency contact information on Pipeline.
• Add at least 3 emergency contacts with Housing in our
Student Web Portal.
• Discuss how to safely get home at night.
• Become familiar with WSU’s Campus Health Center in case
of illness and University Pharmacy for prescriptions.
• Review policies in the Community Living Guide they are
held accountable to.
• Talk about making smart decisions, like locking the door
whenever they leave their room/apartment.
Are you planning on bringing a car to
campus? If so, in order to park on campus
you must purchase a parking semester pass
for Parking Structure #2 (Lodge Service Drive
and Kirby) or Parking Structure #8 (Forest
and Cass) from the ONECARD/Parking
Service Center. The cost of a parking pass
is $260/semester (subject to change). The
aforementioned parking areas are monitored
by parking staff 24 hour a day. Vehicles
parking overnight without an authorized
parking hangtag are subject to parking
violations. Please visit our web site for more
information at www.parking.wayne.edu
or contact the ONECARD/Parking Service
Center.
