24 27 Get Involved Opportunities to get involved are available not only on campus, but in the residence halls and apartments, as well. Each residence hall and apartment building has a Hall/Building Council students can join to gain leadership skills and assist in coordinating hall wide events. Events include BBQ’s, Late Night Breakfast and community service activities. Residents can also stay busy by attending one of the programs coordinated by the Resident Advisors, ranging from health and wellness activities to social movie nights. Student organizations, fraternities and sororities frequently host meetings and programs within the halls that residents may attend throughout the year, as well. VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS WSU offers several opportunities for students to volunteer in and around the community including one day off-campus service projects, on-campus projects and the Alternative Spring Break. Check out, http://www.doso.wayne.edu/volunteer/. STUDENT SENATE WSU also has a Student Senate to serve the students of the campus. The Senate is made up of 28 members to encourage leadership, uphold student achievement, enhance the campus community, live through quality programming and act as a liaison between the students and the administration. THE SOUTH END The South End is the WSU student run newspaper. It is published in print every Wednesday and during the fall and winter semesters and online throughout the year. The South End has been on campus serving students since 1967. ON CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT Looking for a job? Find one right here on campus close to where you learn and live! The front desks in all of our apartment and residence hall buildings hire residents to staff the 24 hour desk. Speak with your building’s Office Services Clerk about any openings. There are also opportunities available through the dining facilities both in and around the halls and in the Student Center Building. Check out Career Services at www.careerservices.wayne.edu. CAMPUS EVENTS There is always something going on around campus. Homecoming is October 15th-20th. To find the latest campus events, visit the WSU website at www.events.wayne. edu. The calendar showcases events hosted by student organizations, Greek life and university departments. 26 New Resident Orientation 29 Are You a First-Time Freshmen at WSU? All first-time freshmen are required to attend Resident Orientation and New Student Days. Resident Orientation is an opportunity for new students to socialize with other residents, learn about the campus and GET INVOLVED while learning how to be a successful member of the campus community. Resident Orientation is MANDATORY. It is followed up with New Students Days, required for all new WSU students. New Student Days allow students to learn more about classes, university requirements and campus resources to be a successful student. It is also a time where students create lasting friendships. Volunteers may work check-in tables, assist students in moving their belongings to their rooms, directing traffic and more! As a volunteer you must attend training on Friday, August 24th and be available to work on Saturday and Sunday, August 25th and 26th.
