Descendants of Mathias Bryan-O'Bryan
First Generation
1. Mathias Bryan-O'Bryan was born in 1627 in Rotterdam, , Zuid-Holland,
Netherlands and died before 11 Aug 1703 in Charles County, Maryland.
Noted events in his life were:
• Information: 1627, Rotterdam, , Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. Mathias
went by surnames Bryan, O'Bryan, O'Brien in Maryland Records. It is
potentially possible this Mathias O'Bryan was the son of John Bryan and
his wife the widow - Elizabeth Stafford (nee Garnet). If so, that would
prove a third cousin relationship with Morgan Bryan who married
Martha Strode, but we do not believe that relationship is valid due to
DNA tests available. Much work needs to be done on Mathias and his
descendants.
William married Rachel Cornelius, daughter of Capt. Mathias Cornelius
and Rachel Dyke, in 1693 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Rachel was
born in 1674 in Northumbeland County, Virginia and died before 1730 in
Northumberland County, Virginia.
County, Maryland and died before 30 Mar 1751 in Augusta
County, Virginia.
Cornelius married Rebecca Evans (d. Bef 17 Aug 1773).
7. Cornelius Bryan-O'Bryan (William 2 , Mathias 1 ) was born in 1697
in Charles County, Maryland and died before 30 Mar 1751 in Augusta County,
Virginia.
Noted events in his life were:
• Information: 1697, Charles County, Maryland. The information that
opened the key to this family was the family of Francis Pope and his
daughter Magdalen. The Pope family seldom left any part of their estate
to daughters, instead they usually made a gift of land when a daughter
was of age or before they married. There can be little doubt that
Cornelius and the family of Morgan Bryan were associated in Virginia -
Joseph Bryan witnessed the will of Cornelius, and Cornelius lived on
Linville Creek thereto tying the family of Joseph to Cornelius again.
Cornelius purchased land from the Hite family on Linville Creek
.Although we have no proof of a direct blood relationship between the
family of Cornelius and Morgan Bryan of Virginia and North Carolina,
we believe they were at least distant cousins, perhaps fifth or sixth based
on extant DNA test results.
Biog./Hist. Note During its session begun in May 1780 the General
Assembly passed an act authorizing the governor to impress supplies
needed by the American army. The governor appointed commissioners
of the provision law in each locality to carry out the terms of the act. The
commissioner, when he impressed property, gave the owner a certificate
describing what was taken. Between 1781 and 1783 county courts held
special sessions at which certificates were presented and authenticated,
and booklets listing authenticated certificates were compiled and sent to
Richmond for settlement. Two commissioners appointed to settle the
claims recorded those for which they authorized payment, and warrants
were issued by the auditor of public accounts.
Second Generation (Children)
12. Magdalen Pope (Francis (Capt.) 1 ) was born in 1642 in Charles County,
Maryland and died before 1720 in Northumbeland County, Virginia.
Magdalen married Mathias Bryan-O'Bryan in 1671 in Charles County,
Maryland. Mathias was born in 1627 in Rotterdam, , Zuid-Holland,
Netherlands and died before 11 Aug 1703 in Charles County, Maryland.
