DR. DAVID HILTON, of
Clarkston, GA, on July 27,
2008 of complications from
non-Hodgkins lymphoma
at age 76. A longtime
advocate of empowering
communities through faith
and health, Hilton served
on the adjunct faculty in
global health. Early in his
career, he and his wife
Laveta served as Methodist
missionaries in Nigeria. For
nine years, he performed
surgery six days a week and trained nurses, pharmacists,
and midwives to care for clinic outpatients. He returned to
Nigeria for seven years to establish a self-sustaining community
health service in the mountains bordering Cameroon.
He applied the same skills to strengthen health services for
Seminole Indians in Florida.
A licensed pilot, Hilton often flew to remote areas to care
for those in need. He also served as assistant director of the
World Council of Churches’ Christian Medical Commission and
as chaplain for international students at Emory.
Even after retiring, Hilton remained a dedicated teacher,
inspiring global health students to engage communities
in sustainable health and encouraging medical students
to explore the connection between spirituality and health.
“Whenever I had David teach a class, he never lectured. He
posed a question and broke the class into small groups to
wrestle with the questions,” said Stan Foster, professor of
global health.
Hilton is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, a
brother, and a granddaughter.
