Training and Development
In partnership with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Long Beach, CSULA
participated in a pilot training program for managers – “The Leadership
Academy.” This certificate program was designed to help develop future CSU
campus leaders as part of a succession planning effort. This was a six-month
program where managers met twice monthly to participate in training modules,
presented on respective campuses, with workshop leaders from both on and off
campus. The workshops were comprised of the following topics:
Public Sector Financial Management
Principles of Executive Leaderships
Managing the Marginal Employee
Communicating at the Executive Level
Effective Planning and Delegation
Project Management
Employee Relations & Collective Bargaining
Managing Technology
Customer Service at the Executive Level
Based on established criteria, participants were nominated by their respective
vice presidents and overall participation was determined by each campus’
assistant vice president for Human Resources Management. Congratulations to
our participants for completing the program:
2012 W-2: If you have moved and need to update your address, please
fill out the appropriate form in the Human Resources Management
office, Adm. 606, by December 3, 2012. Look for messages regarding
your 2012 W-2 on your future pay warrants.
Excess/Deficit hours for non-exempt employees on alternate work
schedules need to be reconciled as of December 31, 2012. The payroll
technician will notify employees with deficit hours. Excess hours will be
paid in January 2013.
Time and Labor: The deadline for students to make adjustments to
their time on PeopleSoft is the last calendar day of the month.
1. Timekeepers should reconcile and make corrections/adjustments
to student time on a weekly basis.
2. Timekeepers should ensure that students are entering their time
on the correct record. When in doubt, call your payroll
technician.
3. Timekeepers have three calendar days after the pay period ends
to make adjustments. Timekeepers are locked out of the system
after the third day.
4. Student and positive attendance should be approved between the
first and fourth calendar day of the following month.
What’s Next with Absence Management
Email notifications are coming soon. If a timekeeper or approver enters
an absence on your behalf or marks an entry as needing correction, you
will receive an email from the Absence Management system. Reminder
emails for deadlines will also be generated each month. More
information will be provided as this system becomes operational.

Helpful Tips for Absence Management
1. Absences may be entered up to two months in advance.
2. Timekeepers may mark absences as “Reviewed” any time during
the month. This also aids approvers so they can quickly make
approvals.
3. The schedule for absences to be approved is the same as for Time
& Labor. Upcoming approval deadlines are:
September – October 3, 2012
October – November 2, 2012
November – December 4, 2012
December – January 3, 2013
4. Missing the absences approval deadline results in incorrect
employee leave balances.
5. New accruals and usage will be updated by the 15 th of the
following month.
Direct deposit forms are available in the payroll office. The State
Controller’s Office will not accept direct deposit forms from an
employee’s financial institution.
