Rehabilitation of runways – using
Frankfurt International Airport as an example
Kirchhoff’s expertise can be impressively demonstrated
using the rehabilitation of the north
and south runways at Frankfurt International
Airport as an example. The requirements presented
a great challenge to man, machinery
and method:
The runway was renewed without hindrance
to fl ight operations, in a time window of just
7.5 hours each night. Normal fl ights were able
to resume punctually at 06:00 hours every
morning.
The runway was ripped up and renewed in
sections 15 m long and 60 m wide during each
of the so-called excavation nights.
After an adequately large area had been made
ready in the excavation nights, these were followed
at regular intervals, every 5 to 7 weeks,
by the so-called paving nights. The binder
surface already laid was then cut away and
replaced by a new asphalt wearing course.
Flights were able to recommence without
problems just 1.5 hours after the new surface
had been installed.
