NOTES TO APPLICANTS FOR PAGE-CHARGE WAIVERS
Only members of the Entomological Society of Canada (ESC) may apply for waiver of
page charges for papers published in The Canadian Entomologist (TCE). Information on
membership should therefore be given under item 7 of the application form.
A restricted number of waivers is granted in each year to a limit defined by the Society.
Provided that the limit has not been exceeded, waivers are granted only when:
1. Other support is not available. Page-charge waivers are provided to amateurs, retired
entomologists, and individuals in changed circumstances, for example, rather than as a
supplement to institutional funds or grants. The absence of such support should be indicated by
means of items 8, 9, 10, and 11 of the application form.
2. Alternative publication avenues are not available or suitable. Shorter papers on many
subjects can be published in journals that do not levy page charges, such as the Canadian
Journal of Zoology. This possibility should be dealt with under item 12 of the application form.
3. There are particular reasons, besides the quality, recognition, or wide distribution of
TCE, for publishing in TCE rather than other journals. Such reasons might include, for example,
that the author prefers to publish work of Canadian relevance in Canada, previous related work
has appeared in the journal, the work stems from an ESC initiative such as a symposium, or the
appropriate audience, scientific usefulness, or allowable format of the paper as it would be
published in TCE enhances the value of the work. These reasons should be explained under
item 14 of the application form.
If the application meets these criteria, waivers may be granted for papers judged
scientifically acceptable by the normal review process. Page-charge waivers generally will not
be granted to a single author to publish a large number of pages over a period of only a few
years.
