Sidney Performing Arts
Presents Juan Sanchez
Ensemble April 6
By Jill Hill
The Sidney Performing Arts Council and the Northeastern
Arts Network present their finale of the Big Sky
Concert Series on Sunday, April 6.
Discover the new cosmopolitan sounds of Spain
with the Juan L. Sanchez Ensemble.
The music of the Juan L. Sanchez Ensemble is
rooted in Nueva Cancion, (Spanish/Latin American
New Folk) but incorporates rhythmic and melodic nuances
that can be traced to contemporary urban jazz.
Flamenco fusion and Middle-Eastern music. This
kaleidoscope of musical genres gives life to the impassioned
work of Juan L. Sanchez, who has also put
to music the works of Spanish and Latin American
poets such as Lorca, Neruda and Miguel Hernandez.
This ensemble features the gritty singing style,
humor and socially-conscious songwriting of Juan L.
Sanchez, a native of Malaga, Spain. In addition, the
band boasts two amazing California musicians: Chris
Garcia and Dayan Kai. Mexican-American master percussionist
Christopher Garcia’s background includes
performances in a wide variety of settings including
jazz, rock, world music, traditional Mexican music, pre-
Hispanic music, soundtracks and cartoon music. Dayan
Kai’s music is informed by an adventurous personality.
Whenever he takes the stage Dayan is surrounded by
instruments. This 27-year-old, described by Sanchez
as a “musical genius”, lacks the sense of sight, but can
be appreciated by anyone with a pair of ears. Dayan
can switch from a 12-string to charango, pan pipes to
trumpet, guitars, piano, vihuela, accordion and much
more.
Along with their touring schedule, the ensemble
has recorded two albums, Cosmopolita (which reflects
Juan’s dreams for a more compassionate and “cosmopolitan”
view of the world) and Hijos de la Tierra.
This performance will be held at the Sidney Middle
School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity
to purchase pre-season tickets for the ’08-‘09 Big Sky
Series at a reduced price on this night only! Tickets for
this performance can be purchased at the door - $10/
adult, $9/Sr., and $7/student. For more information
please contact Candy Markwald 406-488-4155, Jill Hill
406-488-3845, or Karen Boehler 406-433-4375.
This event made possible in part by the Montana
Performing Arts Consortium Quick Grant program which
is also supported by grants from the National Endowment
for the Arts, Montana Arts Council, legislative
grants from Montana’s Cultural Trust and the Western
States Art Federation.
March Of Dimes Helps
Local Premature Twins
Twins James and Nicole
Murphy, Circle, were born
New Year’s Eve, 2006 at 28
weeks. James weighed 2
lbs., 3 oz. and Nicole
weighed 2 lbs., 1 oz. Mom
Amanda had gone on bed
rest at 23 weeks and managed
to carry the twins another
five weeks but ended
up in labor in Miles City. Plans
were to fly her to Billings, but
due to health issues, the St.
Vincent flight team flew to
Miles City. After the babies
were born by C section, they
were stabilized and flown to
the neonatal unit at St.
Vincent’s. They were only four
hours old. James was a
tough little guy who had apnea
and some feeding difficulty
but overall was quite
healthy. He spent 68 days in
the hospital before being released.
He developed hemangioma
(a birthmark) on
his face after his release, but
is now off all his medication
and is doing great.
Easter Egg Hunt Featured At Missouri-Yellowstone
Confluence Interpretive Center March 22
The Missouri-
Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive
Center, in cooperation
with the Trenton Fire Department,
will hold an Easter
Egg Hunt on Saturday,
March 22, beginning at 11
a.m. CT.
This special community
event will offer children not
only the chance to chase
down those elusive Easter
Eggs at the confluence, but
also allow them to enjoy the
educational opportunities
provided by the Confluence
Center’s exhibits.
While the Trenton Fire
Department has been offer-
Little Nicole had a host
of problems, including
chronic lung disease, and
was flown to Denver when
she was two weeks old to
have the first of several surgeries.
The doctors did a
PDA ligation at that time. She
also had to have four blood
transfusions plus another
surgery to put a G tube in.
Normally, when the G tube is
removed, the body knows
and will heal itself. In Nicole’s
case however, it required
another surgery to close the
gap. Nicole also had two hernias
which had to be corrected.
“She had a really
rough time,” Amanda said.
“We almost lost her at two
weeks.”
After 110 days, Nicole
was ready to come home to
Circle with her mom and her
dad, Josh. “It was pretty scary
bringing her home,” Amanda
said. “But we had everything
you could have at home and
lots of people checking on
ing this event to local children
for more than 15 years,
this year will be even more
special as the fire department
and Confluence Center join
forces to offer the children the
best Easter Egg Hunt experience
possible.
The event is free and
open to the public. Free refreshments
will also be available.
18 th Annual Sons Of Norway
Dance Workshop March 28-29
Enighed Lodge of Sons of Norway is hosting the 18 th
Annual District 4 Folk Dance Workshop in Watford City on
Friday and Saturday, March 28-29.
All events for the workshop will be held at the Civic Center/Veterans
Memorial Building. District 4 involves lodges
from North Dakota, Montana and part of Canada.
Bob Halmes, Red Lodge, MT, will be the instructor for
the workshop.
Registration begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by a
dinner and dancing.
Saturday begins with a breakfast and then dancing. The
banquet will be Saturday at 6 p.m. followed by the Grand
March and a dance. Music will be provided by “Ramblin
Notes” accordion players from the Williston area. The Grand
March is a fun event to watch as all the dancers will be
dressed in their Norwegian attire.
The public is invited to come and watch the dancing.
her.” Both children were on
oxygen for several months,
James until two weeks after
Nicole came home, and
Nicole until October.
James now weighs 18
lbs. and Nicole weighs 13.
“They’re perfect now,”
Amanda proudly stated. “The
doctor said he had never
seen what she (Nicole) went
through and she came out so
perfect. But we had a lot of
doctors and a lot of help!”
Amanda believes that
the March of Dimes is the
reason why her twins survived
and are thriving. “I am
absolutely thankful that we
have it,” she said. “The surfactant
for premie lungs was
developed by them. I read
and did everything I could to
help prevent a premature
delivery, but March of Dimes
research helped my babies
survive a very early delivery.”
“My life has changed,
and all for the best,” Amanda
said. ”I look at life and babies
vides the same magnificent
view that Lewis and Clark
Expedition members enjoyed
when they visited in
1805 and 1806. One of the
facility’s unique features is a
large replica of a compass
that the explorers carried on
their 1803-06 expedition.
Located in the center of the
facility’s rotunda, it measures
James & Nicole
Murphy of Circle
with a different perspective. I
became a blood donor because
of my daughter and I’m
very thankful to a lot of people
out there.”
Amanda will have a
team in the March of Dimes
Walkamerica to be held in
Sidney on Saturday, April 19
at the Richland County Fairgrounds.
Joining her will be
her mom, her mother-in-law,
her sister, her aunt plus at
least two more individuals
from the Circle community.
She has been busy getting
the word out and is hoping to
recruit more walkers and
more donations to this very
worth cause. “It’s a way to give
back to March of Dimes,” she
explained. The money raised
goes to research–to help
someone else’s babies like
they helped mine.”
eight feet in diameter and
faces true north, just as Lewis
and Clark would have
looked north when they were
at the same site 200 years
ago. The rotunda area includes
three large murals
featuring quotes from the
Lewis and Clark Journals,
and paintings of the Missouri
Sunrise Valley Event
To Be Held In Sidney
Just days away, Ron Evitt, known as “A Preacher in the Patch,
Oil Patch that is”, and team will be presenting “The SUNRISE VAL-
LEY Event” in Sidney, on March 27- 30, at the Sidney Middle School
Auditorium, at 7 p.m. nightly.
The SUNRISE VALLEY Event, where “everyone is invited”, will
be the 23 rd event of its kind presented in western North Dakota and
eastern Montana beginning in 2000. Since then the program has
developed into an event of encouragement, full of laughs, and an
opportunity to take a look at yourself from a different point of view.
Ron Evitt is confident that, “People spend too much time on the
sidelines watching other people move ahead.” Evitt says, “This event
is geared to people who want to make the most out of life.” The event
consists of a wide variety of singers and bands, with a different
program each night. Singers and musicians are coming from Williston,
ND, Minneapolis, MN, and even from the North Country, La Crete,
Canada.
Evitt is sure that “We have something for everyone,” with variety
ranging from country, bluegrass, a cappella and contemporary
music, to a special encourager/comedian all the way from Nashville,
TN. And can you believe it? The HIGH VALLEY Band was
intercepted on the way to a recording session in Nashville; they too
are headed to Sidney.
A special friend, Londa Lundstrom Ramsey, is coming also;
she is the daughter of Lowell Lundstrom who had a TV and radio
program in our area years ago. Come as you are. Refreshments
will be served nightly. Everyone is welcome. For any questions call
Ron Evitt, 701-770-0200 or email at rrevitt7@nemont.net.
Public Hearing Scheduled For Highway
U.S. 2 Environmental Assessment
The Montana Department
of Transportation (MDT)
is holding a formal public
hearing to discuss a proposal
to four-lane U.S. 2 from
Culbertson to the North Dakota
state line. Two hearing
dates will be held: one on
Monday, March 24 at the
Culbertson Town Hall, 210
Broadway and the other on
Tuesday, March 25 at the
Bainville School, 409
Tubman.
An open house will begin
at 6 p.m. with an informational
presentation at 6:30
p.m. Project staff will take
questions to clarify the understanding
of the EA, and then
will proceed to a formal public
hearing. The presentation
will summarize the project
history, present the Preferred
Alternative, and describe the
The Confluence Center
is open year-round. Its winter
hours are now in effect,
and are from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.,
Wednesdays-Saturdays,
and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. It is
closed on New Year’s Day,
Easter, Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Admission to the
Center’s exhibits is $5 per
environmental process. The
presentation will be identical
on both evenings.
Because of the potential
impacts of the roadway improvements,
the project will
be developed using a formal
process known as an Environmental
Assessment (EA).
The EA study area encompasses
approximately
22 miles of roadway along
U.S. 2 from the junction with
MT 16 north in Culbertson,
east to the North Dakota state
line.
The purpose for the
hearing is to present the Preferred
Alternative and gather
formal public comment.
Community participation is a
very important part of the process,
and the public is encouraged
to attend.
with existing segments
of the Theodore Roosevelt
Expressway and north/south
In addition to satisfying
the need for system continuity,
also provide benefits related
to improved level of service,
improved safety, support for
anticipated economic
growth, and updated roadway
design.
March National Nutrition Month
By Tiffany Pedersen,
Richland County Nutrition
Coalition Student Member
New information about food
and diet appears every day. An
e-mail about “secret” calories in
soft drinks, a friend’s personal
endorsement of a trendy diet,
news reports about conflicting research
on red wine…what is
true, and how do you separate
the truth from the fiction when it
comes to nutrition information?
March is National Nutrition
Month, and the theme for this
year is “Nutrition: It’s a Matter of
Fact”. So as we head into this
month here are a few helpful nutrition
tips to remember:
Don’t believe everything
you read; when a label says “lite”
it is often a marketing tactic. You
should learn to read nutrition labels
and find out for yourself if
the product is in fact “lite” or
healthy.
Variety is important: carbohydrates
and fats are not your
enemy. Rather than eliminating
something completely from your
diet what you should do is make
sure that you consume foods
from each food group each day.
Make food decisions based on
color, texture, and flavor. Don’t
deprive your body of what it
needs.
Make sure to think about
the long haul. One meal or food
choice does not make or break
a healthy lifestyle. Each healthy
food choice or exercise session
is a small step to the big reward,
so don’t be discouraged when
results are not instantaneous.
They will eventually surface, and
in the meantime you will feel better
mentally.
Keep a food diary: keeping
a journal of food eaten helps you
see where you currently are in
the area of nutrition and can be
a successful tool in helping develop
a smarter, more nutritious
diet.
Drink water: try to drink a
glass of water when you would
usually have a sugary drink, replace
one more sugary drink
everyday. Doing only this over a
year’s time can make a big difference.
Have a small healthy snack
before going out to dinner: grab
a handful of almonds, or pretzels,
maybe a small piece of fruit
on your way to dinner. This will
prevent you from being overly
hungry. You will be less likely to
order a big meal and eat excessively.
Balance activity and food
choices. Eat less when you are
less active and more depending
on the amount of activity you
have been or will be doing. Physical
activity is a great idea for
everyone, it jumpstarts your
metabolism and helps you to burn
more calories.
Make healthy lifestyle
changes with a friend; doing
things with a friend is far easier
and more fun too. You will be able
to keep each other motivated
and attitudes will stay positive.
During National Nutrition
Month, keeping these tips in mind
can help you to focus on the
truths about nutrition. Remember:
nutrition—it’s a matter of fact.
Shooter's Education
Sidney Jaycees finished their Shooter’s Education
project with a final written test and shooting test.
Pictured is Jaycee Tom Dockweiler awarding Alec
Lovegren with a BB Gun. Alex had the highest
combination score for both tests. The Jaycees
Shooter’s Education is open to any child ages 8-14.

We live between fences. We may hardly notice them,
history. Between Fences is a traveling exhibition that
explores how tightly the fence is entwined with
American history, politics industry and daily life.
"A Dog's Life"
By Jerry Kessler
I don’t believe in reincarnation,
but I sometimes wonder
what it would be like to come
back (after I die) as a dog. It might
not be too bad. Imagine how it
would be . . .
“Man, this place is noisy!
Can’t a guy get any sleep around
here? Alarms go off; bipeds run
aimlessly around; everyone is in
a hurry to go – where are they
going? To work, to school, to
meetings . . . They must be crazy
to spend their lives like this! Just
plain crazy!
“It’s hard to sleep with all
this noise. I get 12 hours of sleep
each night – plus four or five naps
during the day. I need my beauty
sleep. But I do expect them to
wake me for meals. Breakfast is
especially important. And lately
the meal service has been terrible.
Master runs off somewhere
each morning, and he forgets to
feed me. The nerve of him! I get
hunger pangs if I don’t get fed
every 3 hours. And that ‘mature
dog formula’ he bought is way
too healthy. It’s a good thing the
boys secretly give me table
scraps.
“I like going for walks with
Master. He talks to me as we
walk along – halfway expecting
me to respond. It would be stupid
for me to say anything. I’m
not going to reveal myself. It’s
much more fun to have him
guess what’s on my mind.
“‘You sure pee a lot,’ he
says. Doesn’t he know I’m marking
my territory? I need to let the
ladies know I’m still available. ‘You
don’t pee for 12 hours when
you’re sleeping,’ he says, ‘and
then you pee 12 times on a 15
minute walk. What’s the deal?’ It’s
obvious he doesn’t know how a
dog’s bladder works. He doesn’t
know about my other abilities,
either. And I’m not going to tell
him.
“He thinks I’m an obedient
but stupid dog. When he says
‘Sit,’ what do I do? I sit, of course.
What’s the big deal? I like sitting.
But when he says ‘Fetch,’ what
do you think I do? I sit, of course.
Why should I chase after that
stinky old ball, anyway?
“Master prides himself on
having Free Will. He thinks, since
I’m just a dog, that I’m only capable
of instinctive and simple
programmed behavior. Yeah,
right. If I wanted, I could get a job
as an airport security dog – sniffing
people’s bags for drugs and
bombs, you know. I’d much
rather sniff dog and people
crotches. But only those private
parts that I choose to sniff. Free
Will indeed! He’s the one who has
to work every day. And he thinks
he’s the higher species.
“Enough talk. Please don’t
tell my Master what goes on behind
my blank stare, drooling
tongue, and wagging tail. I like
this gig. I don’t want to mess it
up.”
“Come on, Oscar,” Master
says. “Let’s go for a walk.”
“‘Woof, woof,’ I say with enthusiasm.
I’ve got him trained to
put a leash on me before we go
on these walks. That way I don’t
have to chase cats or squirrels
anymore – as I did in my youth.
I’m too old for that nonsense. You
see, I’ve got my Master on a
leash as much as he thinks he’s
got one on me. I like this slower
pace. It’s a dog’s life, I realize,
but somebody’s got to do it.”
(Author’s note: I wrote most
of this anthropomorphism over
thirty years ago.)
