Dear Field Trialers,
Our Club historian tells me that this is the 87 th consecutive year that the
Cocker Spaniel Field Trial Club of America has sponsored field trials. I
hope you’ll join us on October 15 and 16 to celebrate a little bit of history.
We’ve done all we can to make this the best Cocker Club trial yet.
THE JUDGES. Both Skip Smith from Colorado and Chuck Urland from
Maryland are experienced judges, train their own dogs, have owned and
handled numbers of successful dogs and are highly regarded within the
field trial community. They both know what they’re looking at.
THE GROUNDS. We’re trialing on the same grounds as last year, but this
year we had access to the grounds well before the trial and have groomed
them so that you and the judges can see your dogs! The cover was mowed
to 12 inches on June 16 and with a little help from the weather (a good hard
frost would be nice) will be 24 to 30 inches and stiff enough both to hold
birds and set the dogs back a bit. In addition, we have both heavier and
lighter cover available, so that the Committee can make choices of series
cover that show off – and test – the dogs appropriately.
ATV’s. The course is almost 4/10 of a mile long, so ATV’s may be used to
get dogs to and from the beginning and end of the course. However, we will
not have ATV’s on the course. Access to the course is easy and you will be
able to trail along behind and off to one side in ATV or truck, but not on the
course itself.
CAMPING. There is no camping on the grounds (our insurance doesn’t
cover), but camping is available at Carousel Farm (Mary and Hadley Ford)
within five minutes drive of the grounds. Call 518-398-7603 to make
arrangements.
LUNCH. Lunch will be available both days for a contribution. Lunch will
be Subway sandwiches, soft drinks and cookies.
RELEASES. We will require everyone who participates in, or observes,
the trial to sign a standard release. This helps to protect the landowner, the
Club and the other participants against liability for any trial-related
accidents.
MOTELS. We have a lack of quality motels in the immediate area, but I’ve
personally visited several of the available motels and have attached a list
for your lodging pleasure.
We look forward to a really good trial, and hope to see you there.
Good luck!
Hadley Ford
MOTEL NOTES
Johanna’s Motel
On Route 22, 8 miles north of the grounds. 518-329-3000.
Johanna’s has been renovated. It is clean, has a small restaurant and bar,
has a nice area for airing dogs and offers some ten units ranging from $65
to $110 in price. The larger units can readily be shared. They do not take
credit cards or pets, but do take checks.
Silvanus Lodge
On Route 22 in Hillsdale, 17 miles north of the grounds, but a straight shot
down Route 22. 518-325-3000
Silvanus has nine units ranging in price from $110 to $115. Four of the
units can be shared (two double beds). This is a step up in amenities (with a
pool) and fills up on weekends pretty quickly. Space to air dogs, but no
pets. This is where our judges will be lodged.
Jenny’s Country Lodge
On Route 199 just west of Pine Plains about 9 miles from grounds. 845-
876-1151. Pretty nice with a restaurant and bar. Has 13 units, but fills fast
on fall weekends (only five units available for our weekend). Prices from
$110 to $200. Not much room to air dogs. No pets.
Willows Motel
On Route 343 just east of Route 22 at the light in Amenia. 845-279-8011.
About 10.5 miles south of grounds, but a straight shot up Route 22. Limited
space to air dogs. They have 10 rooms, 3 with twin beds, 5 with one bed
and two a mix. Rooms are clean and about same as Johanna’s above. Rates
are $75 plus $40 for dog in the room. Good food and beverage nearby.
Taghkanic Motel
1011 State Route 82, Ancram, NY 518-851-9006. Located at the
intersection of Route 82 with Taconic Parkway, about 15 miles northwest
of the grounds. They have ten rooms, all with two double beds. Rooms and
bathrooms are clean and neat. Rate is $85 for all rooms. Plenty of room to
air dogs safely. No pets in rooms. Reserve early because of leaf-peepers in
mid-October. Diner across road.
