High Resolution Vision with Fitting Conditions

The Best is getting better
Varilux Physio continues to confirm its position at the top
of the Varilux universal range of lenses and today there are
millions of wearers worldwide using the lens.
Essilor has once again broken new ground in terms of lens
design with the introduction of a new personalised Varilux:
Varilux Physio f-360°. The new lens takes High Resolution
Vision to a new level thanks to personalisation of the design,
with fitting conditions.
The design features of Varilux Physio f-360° are still based
on those of the original Varilux Physio lens and include two
major concepts, Wavefront Management and Point by Point
Twinning.
Advanced Digital Surfacing
Wavefront Management System
The Wavefront Management System is a design approach that
considers the wavefront of the beam of light entering the pupil.
Quality of vision depends on how much the wavefront is distorted
by both sides of the lens.
Optimising the wavefront through the front and rear surface of the lens
greatly reduces aberrations including higher order aberrations like the coma.
Point by Point Twinning
Calculation
With both lens surfaces affecting the quality of the wavefront, in order to
maintain optimal optical performance in all directions of gaze, Essilor’s
patented innovative new calculation software exactly matches the front and
rear surfaces at all points on the lens.
Manufacture
To ensure the optimal performance of very complex progressive surfaces
across a very large prescription range, Essilor has developed an Advanced
Digital Surfacing technology, an extremely accurate manufacturing process
that creates the required surface.
Design Summary
This innovative approach to design and processing means that wearers using
Varilux Physio can benefit from significant improvements in the three main
visual areas:
Distance vision
The higher order abberation coma is controlled, delivering superior
visual sharpness
Intermediate
The axis of unwanted peripheral surface astigmatism is controlled in
a vertical direction, delivering wider areas of clear vision
Near
The power of the near zone is controlled over a larger vertical area
giving greater visual and postural comfort.

Refining Varilux Physio
Studies have shown that the performance of any varifocal lens can
vary significantly depending on the relative position of the eye and the
spectacles. The position of the spectacles to the face of the wearer has
an impact on the integrity of the wavefront passing through the lens and
entering the eye and therefore on the overall visual performance.
These studies highlight that all areas of the lens are affected; however,
in particular, the near and intermediate zones suffer the most.
Variations of the distortions depending on the position of the lens in front of the eye
High Resolution Vision with Fitting Conditions
As fitting gradually moves away from the ‘standard measurements,’
the performance of the lens gradually deteriorates.
To overcome the potential drop in performance of the lens, Essilor has
included five fitting measurements to define accurately the position of the
lens in front of the wearer’s eyes.
By factoring these measurements into the design calculation of Physio
f-360° the areas of clear vision are aligned perfectly in relation to
the wearers’ natural line of vision, from the distance zone through to
intermediate through to near.
To achieve perfect alignment, the exact position of the near vision zone is
tailored to the five measurements. Vertically, the position can vary between
15-18mm, with the horizontal inset varying between 1.7 & 7mm.
This exact positioning ensures the wearer no longer needs to adopt
unnatural postural adjustments for near vision tasks. Postural comfort and
sharp crisp vision are achieved naturally without constraints.
wavefront analysis
The Wavefront technology allows analysis of lens performance.
With Varilux Physio f-360° the beam of light passing through the lens is
virtually aberration free for any direction of gaze whatever the
fitting conditions.
Measuring the five parameters
Specific measuring devices are required to obtain the additional parameters
required for Varilux Physio f-360° lenses. These measurements can be taken
using either a fully automated instrument such like Essilor’s Visioffice unit
that can prove invaluable in terms of the speed and accuracy, or by using
a hand held device.
Essilor has developed a comprehensive hand held measuring gauge
specifically designed to assist the ordering of Physio f-360°.
