teAMS UP WIth ‘DWeLL on DeSIGn’<br />

The Furniture Society—the national<br />

organization of studio furnituremakers—is coming<br />

to Los Angeles to team up with Dwell magazine for a<br />

week-long celebration of design and creativity, <strong>June</strong><br />

20-23. Anchored at the downtown Los Angeles<br />

Convention Center, events and activities are being<br />

planned across the Southland.<br />

FS13: LoS AnGeLeS SYMPoSIUM<br />

The Furniture Society is departing from<br />

its traditional “conference retreat” format to go<br />

urban, with FS13: LA Symposium. A mixture of<br />

presentations, exhibitions, tours, receptions, and<br />

screenings are being planned at various venues,<br />

covering historic and contemporary topics. The<br />

following is the preliminary program, available at<br />

press time:<br />

Presentations: Period furniture maker Alf<br />

Sharp will give a historical perspective on furniture<br />

(<strong>June</strong> 20); New Zealand-based furnituremaker and<br />

lighting designer David Trubridge will discuss<br />

the design process embracing new technology<br />

(<strong>June</strong> 21); exhibition curator Jo Lauria will talk<br />

about the evolution of furniture design (<strong>June</strong><br />

22); furnituremaker Brian Boggs will explore<br />

the business of furnituremaking (<strong>June</strong> 23);<br />

furnituremakers Garry Knox Bennett and Michael<br />

Collins will take a playful look at studio furniture<br />

design (<strong>June</strong> 23); Bonhams furniture specialist Katie<br />

Nartonis will give a historic overview of California<br />

design (<strong>June</strong> 23); and former Cal State Fullerton<br />

Dean of Art Frank E. Cummings III will explore the<br />

creative process of design (<strong>June</strong> 23).<br />

In addition, there will be panel discussions<br />

on contemporary California furniture, moderated<br />

by Handful of Salt Editor Regina Connell, and on<br />

collaboration and marketing, moderated by Leigh<br />

Kivowitz Spencer, of the LA Box Collective.<br />

DWeLL on DeSIGn<br />

Dwell on Design is the largest design show on<br />

the <strong>West</strong> Coast, showcasing the latest in modern<br />

design, <strong>June</strong> 21-23, at the Convention Center in Los<br />

Angeles, CA.<br />

This event consists of a show floor with over<br />

400 exhibitors, divided into Kitchen & Bath, Furniture<br />

& Accessories (both manufactured and handcrafted),<br />

Dwell Outdoor (from mobile homes to backyard<br />

furnishings), Design Materials (from building<br />

supplies to finishes), and the Technology Zone (to<br />

test out the newest electronics).<br />

Three stages on the exhibition floor provide<br />

all-day programming, with over 70 presentations,<br />

covering design innovation, sustainability, business<br />

of design, and demonstrations. Industrial designer<br />

Michael Graves will be the keynote speaker and<br />

furniture maker Tanya Aguiñiga will be the artistin-residence.<br />

The Furniture Society’s Faculty Select:<br />

Student Exhibition will be displayed on the show<br />

floor (see pages 42-43).<br />

In addition, there are a number of off-site<br />

pre-event activities (architect nights, receptions,<br />

showroom openings, and home tours), beginning<br />
