Summary In addition to the Management meetings of the Support group and the Implementation group, 14 Working group meetings took place in 2008 and 4 roadmap preparation sub-group meetings were held. On average at each meeting 10/15 experts have met to implement the ESTEP priorities and roadmaps have been prepared on Scale-free processes, Intelligent Manufacturing, Sustainable use of resources and Energy, Energy efficient buildings and Materials for Power generation. All these roadmaps were discussed and approved in the Support group. Future and broader R&D orientations of WG2 on Automotive have been envisaged in 2008 and new priorities will be proposed in 2009. The people programme of the WG5 has been restructured and new sub-groups focusing on hiring and recruiting talented people have been created. Ambitious communication and training activities are being prepared for 2010. In February the results of the ULCOS phase I project were presented to the Steering Committee and ULCOS II was given the go ahead. Then ESTEP worked on the implementation package, in particular to identify funding possibilities and to develop cooperation with the ZEP platform. This activity is still on-going. In June the Mirror Group meeting took place and addressed the ULCOS II programme and the implementation of other priorities of the SRA. ESTEP got the support of Member States representatives for both the ULCOS programme and other R&D priorities corresponding to the roadmap in preparation. In October the ESTEP’s Chairman M. Wurth and Secretary General J.C Charbonnier met Commissioner Potocnik, members of his Cabinet and RFCS unit. Two main issues were addressed: participation in the EU CCS programme and better implementation of ESTEP’s SRA in the FP7. Solutions have been suggested by the Commissioner. Many meetings took place with the EU Commission (DG Research, DG Energy, Marie Curie Followships) to get information about both on-going and scheduled funding programmes. In particular in the Implementation group meeting of October the EU Commission advised on how to participate in the NMP Construction programme. The Secretary General of the Construction platform presented the ECTP’s SRA and its JTI on energy efficient building. He explained the way to join this JTI. Throughout the year, members of ESTEP and especially the Secretary General participated at many external meetings including SOVAMAT, SCANMET, ECCS, EMF, etc. which were good outreach opportunities for the platform. This activity report also illustrates the proposals submitted to the FP7, RFCS projects implemented in July, RFCS priorities for the 2008 call and updated list of participants in both the Management and Working groups. 2
