Thru September 8 FUTURE RETRO: THE GREAT<br />

AGE OF THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE The<br />

exhibition is <strong>com</strong>prised of draw<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong><br />

collection of Jean S. and Frederick A. Sharf <strong>in</strong><br />

collaboration with <strong>the</strong> Museum of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts,<br />

Boston. The draw<strong>in</strong>gs showcase <strong>the</strong> beauty and<br />

<strong>in</strong>genuity of American automotive design dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> decades follow<strong>in</strong>g World War II, a landmark<br />

period <strong>in</strong> car styl<strong>in</strong>g. These illustrations, from<br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary sketches to fully rendered works,<br />

provide a rare glimpse <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> creative process of<br />

some of America’s premiere car designers. Featured<br />

along with <strong>the</strong>se two-dimensional works will<br />

Start<strong>in</strong>g July 1 ART GUILD SHOWS The Art Guild<br />

of Orange Park will have two separate shows at<br />

different ends of North East Florida. They will be<br />

show<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> JaxPort Headquarters Gallery (at<br />

2831 Talleyrand Ave <strong>in</strong> Jacksonville) and also<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Larimer Art Center <strong>in</strong> Palatka (216 Reid<br />

St). The JaxPort show is a Florida <strong>the</strong>med show<br />

to celebrate <strong>the</strong> discovery of Florida by Spa<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> 1513. Both shows beg<strong>in</strong> July 1. The Larimer<br />

show ends at <strong>the</strong> end of July. The JaxPort show<br />

Four new murals are be<strong>in</strong>g constructed on <strong>the</strong> 52-foot stair towers of <strong>the</strong> Yates Park<strong>in</strong>g Garage<br />

at 200 East Adams Street. Work began June 6. The murals are <strong>the</strong> newest addition to <strong>the</strong> City of Jacksonville’s<br />

Art <strong>in</strong> Public Places collection, adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.<br />

The first two murals, by nor<strong>the</strong>ast Florida artists Felici Aste<strong>in</strong>za and Joey Fillastre of Milagros<br />

Art Collective, are abstract designs best seen by drivers enter<strong>in</strong>g Adams Street from <strong>the</strong> Hart Bridge<br />

Expressway. Neptune Beach artist Sean Mahan will create figurative and symbolic images on <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two murals to engage audiences at <strong>the</strong> pedestrian level. The murals will create a visual connection<br />

to accessible public park<strong>in</strong>g and serve as an entry po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Spark District, a new Cultural<br />

Council <strong>in</strong>itiative to revitalize <strong>the</strong> downtown core through arts and culture projects.<br />

An art selection panel of local art, design and <strong>com</strong>munity professionals selected two w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

designs follow<strong>in</strong>g a request for proposals <strong>issue</strong>d <strong>in</strong> 2012 for artists resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> five-county First<br />

Coast area. Selection criteria were based on artistic excellence, susta<strong>in</strong>ability, related artist experience,<br />

level of <strong>com</strong>munity engagement, improvement of <strong>the</strong> pedestrian environment, and <strong>the</strong> design’s<br />

Friday, July 5. First Street Gallery wel<strong>com</strong>es guest<br />

batik artist Wendy Tatter from St. August<strong>in</strong>e. She<br />

studied at Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Commonwealth University, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

followed her tropical <strong>in</strong>fatuation and moved to<br />

<strong>the</strong> West Indies, Mexico, Costa Rico and Brazil.<br />

Wendy has developed a style of her own, often<br />

reflect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people and places from her travels.<br />

Batiks are created through a sensual and organic<br />

process – a molten mixture of beeswax and<br />

paraff<strong>in</strong> is applied on fabric to resist dyes. Layers<br />

of wax and dyes are alternately applied by brush<br />

or immersion until <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>com</strong>plete. First<br />

CUBISM A collaborative exhibition from Overstreet<br />

Ducasse and Stephanie Glen will take<br />

place at CoRK Arts District. Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

art collide as Stephanie Glen, a ma<strong>the</strong>matician,<br />

and Overstreet Ducasse, a socially charged artist,<br />

merge <strong>the</strong>ir talents to explore <strong>the</strong> connection<br />

between math and art, explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> numbers<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d art and <strong>the</strong> artistry beh<strong>in</strong>d numbers.<br />

Glen was thrust <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> public’s eye with her<br />

OneSpark contribution, “The Number Hunter,” a<br />

children’s television show explor<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>the</strong>matics<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Discovery Channel motif. Ducasse has<br />

always kept <strong>the</strong> math as a beh<strong>in</strong>d-<strong>the</strong>-scenes<br />

<strong>com</strong>ponent to his already <strong>in</strong>tellectually-charged<br />

body of work. In partner<strong>in</strong>g with Glen, <strong>the</strong> two<br />

are able to explore deep ma<strong>the</strong>matical philosophy<br />
