PUBLIC COMMISSIONS English text: Title: Dawn (Kvæn title: Koitto) This is a commission I did for the Kvæn Centre for Language and Culture in the valley of Børselv in the far north of Norway. The Kvæns emigrated to Norway from the 16th century up until the first half of the 19th century, and a lot of them came to this particular area. They fled from famine in the north of Finland, seeking the ice free fjords of Northern Norway where they could get plenty of fish and grow vegetables and barley. According to Terje Antonsen, initiator and driving force behind the resurrection of the Kvæn culture and language, the first family to arrive to the valley had walked for weeks. Exhausted after their long journey they finally reached the top of the mountain and saw the glorious, green valley below. - “We have come to paradise” they uttered. In the painting I have tried to capture this feeling. Spring, just as the birch is budding and the sun is rising behind the mountains and bathing the valley in a lemon yellow light.
