Shaping the Future Lecture<br />
Paul Jackson took up his post as<br />
ITV’s Director <strong>of</strong> Entertainment<br />
and Comedy in February 2006<br />
after working as Granada’s Chief<br />
Executive Officer in America.<br />
Before that, Paul worked in<br />
Australia as Chief Executive Officer<br />
<strong>of</strong> Granada Productions and spent<br />
a period back in the UK as Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> International Production and<br />
Entertainment.<br />
He has a distinguished record as<br />
a programme producer. His hits<br />
include the BBC’s cult sci-fi sit-com<br />
Red Dwarf, 3 Of A Kind (BAFTA &<br />
MONTREUX ROSE WINNER), The<br />
Young Ones (BAFTA WINNER), Girls<br />
on Top for Central, Don’t Miss Wax<br />
and Saturday Live for Channel 4.<br />
He also co-produced an Oscarwinning<br />
success in 1988 with<br />
the comedy live action short<br />

America, the company produced<br />
some highly successful shows.<br />

on Fox and Hit Me Baby One More<br />
Time on NBC were the number<br />
one shows <strong>of</strong> the week in the 18-<br />
49 demos. Paul has executiveproduced<br />
both series.<br />
Since Paul joined ITV Network in<br />
2006 there have been several<br />
notable successes in the<br />
Entertainment and Comedy fields,<br />
most obviously Britain’s Got<br />
Talent and the BAFTA nominated<br />
Benidorm which is ITV’s first<br />
successful returning comedy<br />
series for five years.<br />
From 1994 to 1996 Jackson was<br />
Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Royal Television<br />
Society. He was Chairman <strong>of</strong> Comic<br />
Relief from its launch until 1999<br />
and was also Chairman <strong>of</strong> its<br />
parent, Charity Projects. He is<br />
currently Chairman <strong>of</strong> TimeBank,<br />
a major UK charity dedicated to<br />
increasing the effectiveness <strong>of</strong><br />
volunteering within the UK. He is<br />
a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Directors and a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the Royal<br />
Television Society. He is on the<br />
Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> the United<br />
States Comedy Arts Festival.<br />
In 2004 he was awarded an<br />
Honorary Doctorate by his old<br />
<strong>University</strong> in <strong>Exeter</strong>, where he is<br />
also a Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the<br />
School <strong>of</strong> English. He broadcasts<br />
regularly on Radio Four with his<br />
series In Conversation With, and<br />
he now fronts Britain In A Box.<br />
