Commodore
I would like to comment briefly on the CIH barbecue, and the
election of directors and officers for 2012/2013.
On Sunday, Aug. 26, I had the pleasure of attending the Club
BBQ at Seabridge Marina in Oxnard, and I found it to be a
delightful event. Well attended, great venue, excellent food and a
great opportunity to meet a lot of CIH members. The “bring your
own dish” system worked like a charm, sailing the Capri 14.2’s in
the pond was a lot of fun and it was a great social event that
everyone enjoyed. I wish we had a comparable venue in Marina
Del Rey, but, so far, I have not found one.
With regard to the election of directors and officers for
2012/2013, we had planned to hold these at the membership
meeting in Marina Del Rey on Aug. 23, but we had to defer it due
to a lack of quorum. That’s probably my fault because a Thursday
evening was a poor choice of times to hold a membership meeting.
Election & Membership Meeting
Oct. 13 in Marina del Rey
The next general membership
meeting will be Saturday, Oct. 13
at the Santa Monica Windjammers
Yacht Club, 13589 Mindanao Way,
Marina del Rey.
The meeting will include the
election of officers for the coming
year. A potluck luncheon and
afternoon sail will follow.
A Mapquest link is here.
So here is the plan. The existing board will remain in place until the election is completed. We have
scheduled a membership meeting for 11.30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht
Club in Marina Del Rey. We will do what is necessary to insure we have a quorum at that meeting and we
intend to move straight into the installation lunch, immediately after the election.
Calypso’s Cruise
MDR’s newest boat, Calypso
fared well on first cruise.
Page 5.

So far, we only have one nomination for each position but we can take additional nominations up to the time
of the election, including nominations from the floor. However, at this point, the slate of candidates is as
follows:
Commodore - Richard Windebank
Vice Commodore - Adrienne O’Donnell
MDR Rear Commodore - Chuck Orlin
CIH Rear Commodore - Carl Enson
MDR Fleet Captain - Dick Gross
CIH Fleet Captain - Patrick Anderson
Treasurer - Mike Delaney
Secretary - Mark Boykin
We will follow the example of CIH and make this a potluck cold buffet, so please bring a dish to share with
your fellow members. No kitchen facilities will be available, but Fairwind will provide soft drinks, plates,
cutlery, etc. So contributions such as cold meats, salads, deserts, cheese and biscuits etc. will all be appreciated.
We also welcome volunteers to help clean up afterwards, so we can leave the room “cleaner than we found it”.
A club sail is planned for the afternoon for everyone who would like to participate.
Please mark your calendar and save the date. More details will be sent out nearer the time.
In the meantime, Wendy and I are heading off to Italy where we will tour by car for two weeks before joining
our sons on their boat. We then plan to sail from Malta to Tunisia but, as always, these plans are flexible and
we will be happy sailing anywhere. While I am away I am asking Marv Brown to stand in for me so the Club
will be in excellent hands.
Blue-By-U Finds A Good Home — Locally
It’s always sad to say goodbye to an old friend but many of us will be pleased that Blue By U will remain in
Marina Del Rey.
On Aug. 16, we sold the boat to an enthusiastic racer who is a member of Del Rey Yacht Club, so we helped
move the boat over to her new slip. The buyer, by the name of Yvo Kwee, a really nice guy who was born in
the Netherlands, is a friend and sailing colleague of Fairwind Member Halli Kristjansson. Yvo plans to race
Blue By U and looks forward to competing against Seaweed and a yellow soling in MDR called “Chaos” that
was featured in our August Newsletter.
We look forward to seeing Blue-By-U out on the water and we hope she will provide many years of happy
sailing for her new owner.
It’s ‘Do Unto Others’ In The Local Yachting World
By Richard Windebank
The Yachting community has always been know for it’s friendliness, and yacht clubs typically welcome visiting
yachtsmen from far away places. So, any time you are sailing away from your home port, you can expect a
warm reception at most of the yacht clubs you visit.
If it’s a long way from home, consider taking a Fairwind burgee to give to a club that welcomes you. They
appreciate them and often decorate their club house with hundreds of burgees they receive this way.
Locally, in Southern California, a lot of yacht clubs take additional steps to extend the hand of friendship.
Fairwind receives scores of invitations, especially from other clubs that make up the Southern California
Yachting Association, formally offering Fairwind members the use of their facilities, including their opening
ceremony at the beginning of the season.
If you go to www.fairwind.org/members/recirpocalclubs, you will see a list of clubs that routinely write to us
every year. But do not assume that list is complete. There are probably many more that send us invites and more
still who will welcome us.
In Marina del Rey, there are two clubs who offer Fairwind Members reciprocal membership on preferential
terms. These are Pacific Mariners Yacht Club (PMYC) and Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club (SMWYC).
At Pacific Mariners, the initiation fee for a new PMYC Fairwind Associate member is $50 (normally $400) and
monthly dues are reduced by 50% to $37.50 per month. PMYC Fairwind Associate Members have limited
access to the clubhouse and only when a Regular PMYC Member is in attendance and do not have PMYC
voting rights.
PMYC Fairwind Associate members can participate in all PMYC Cruises, Parties, Dinners and Events etc.
Further information can be obtained from Michael Donovan, PMYC Membership Chairman at 310-437-9716 or
email: md3trojantwice@gmail.com
At Santa Monica Windjammers, the initiation fee remains at the normal rate of $100, but monthly dues are
reduced by 50% to $65 per month. Fairwind members have full use of the SMWYC facilities, but do not have
SMWYC voting rights. All SMWYC members are required to do one day per year of office duty to support the
running of the Club.
SMWYC/Fairwind Members get to participate in all SMWYC Cruises, Races, Parties, Dinners and Events etc.
Further information can be obtained from Fred Weinhart, SMWYC Rear Commodore at 818-362-2060 or email:
fredsmwyc@aol.com
Both of these opportunities offer Fairwind members excellent value for money and we appreciate the special
terms they give us and the warm hand of friendship that awaits us.
