Why Coach Lam and Carolina Wrestling Are Synonymous
• Before Coach Lam took over in 1974, Carolina had an overall record
of 160-256-13 for a .390 winning percentage and no ACC titles in 20
tries. The Tar Heels have since gone 367-126-4 (.793), won 14 ACC
titles and finished atop the regular-season standings 16 times, including
nine straight first place finishes in the Lam regime.
• Lam has had 36 All-Americas and five NCAA champions in his watch.
• The Tar Heels have appeared in all 29 NCAAChampionships and have
finished in the Top 20 on 14 occasions.
• Carolina is 132-34-1 in ACC competition
and Lam’s .793 winning percentage is the
highest ever in the ACC.
• Homer Rice (Former Athletic Director at
UNC) ... “In 1965 I accepted a position at
the University of Oklahoma as a football
assistant (offensive cordinator). My first
night on campus I attended a wrestling
match between Oklahoma and Oklahoma
State. The two schools were ranked No. 1
and No. 2 nationally and OU beat OSU in a
close victory. One wrestler that caught my
eye was Bill Lam. He was a tremendous
competitor. He went on to become coach at
Norman (Okla.) High School. In 1969 I
became Director of Athletics at UNC. The
wrestling program was on the bottom of the
conference and it didn’t take me long to call
Bill Lam and invite him to visit Chapel Hill.
His superb work at Carolina is the rest of the
story. We moved quickly up the ladder in
the ACC and in a short time, became a
nationally ranked program. In the first years
Bill was tireless worker. He made all the
trips to the various communities for our Ram
Club meetings to sell his program. Support
came fast and Bill was adopted as a true Tar
Heel. He has expressed, too many times, his
thanks for giving him the opportunity to
coach at Carolina. Please convey to Bill my
congratulations upon his very successful
career and the good he has given to so many student-athletes. I wish
him well.”
• Dick Baddour (Director of Athletics) ... “Bill Lam put North Carolina
wrestling on the map and I mean on the high school as well as collegiate
level. He has earned the right to be called one of the best coaches in the
history of the ACC. He built a dominant program in our league and
made Carolina a legitimate presence on the national scene. His teams
have always been well disciplined and hard working and competed for
each other as well as the university. He will be difficult to replace.”
• Lenny Bernstein (Virginia Head Coach) ... “Coach Lam has done an
amazing job,” says Bernstein, who won two ACC titles and earned All-
America honors in 1987 while wrestling at UNC. “He built the program
from nothing. When I was there we were consistently in the Top 10 or
Top 20. The next coach will have unbelievably large shoes to fill.
When you talk about UNC wrestling, you mention Coach Lam in the
same breath. They’re tied together. He’s done an
unbelievable job.”
BILL LAM’S LEGACY
• C.D. Mock (Assistant Coach) ... "I believe that time will prove that
Bill Lam truly is a legend in wrestling. Undoubtedly, he's had the greatest
effect on wrestling in the Southeastern United States. When I talk to
youth organizations they all know Bill Lam. I think as time goes by
people are going to recognize the sacrifices and contributions he made to
the sport of wrestling and realize he truly is a legend.”
• Rob Koll (Cornell Head Coach) ... “He’s the epitome of Carolina
wrestling,” says Koll, who posted a 155-20-1
record from 1984-88 and was the first Tar
Heel to earn All-America honors four times.
“He took a program from humble beginnings
and turned it into a national power. When
you think of Carolina wrestling, you definitely
think of Coach Lam.”
• Doug Wyland (NCAAFinalist) ... “Because
of Coach Lam, Carolina wrestling has always
been one large family,” says Wyland, a twotime
ACC champion and national runner-up
in 1989,
who is now an orthopedic surgeon in Vail,
Colo. “And he’s the patriarch of
that family.”
• Dick Knox (Deputy Director of the North
Carolina High School Athletic Association)
... “North Carolina high school wrestling is at
the level it is today as a result of Bill Lam. It
is a result of the time and effort Bill put into
building his program at UNC and the commitment
he has made to high school
wrestling. He has been a leader in coming
up with innovative and creative ways to positively
promote and improve wrestling at
all levels.”
• Coach Lam ... “I have a lot of personal
memories, but my favorite is hosting the
1994 NCAAChampionship here in Chapel
Hill and having a national champion (T.J.
Jaworsky) win the title in front of our home
crowd. It was the largest attendance in NCAAwrestling history and still
is talked about as being one of the best championship sites ever. 1982
was also a special year because C.D. Mock became our first national
champion and the team placed fifth at NCAAs. People laughed at me
when I said North Carolina wrestling would become a nationally competitive
program and that year we proved we belonged.”
• Caoch Lam ... “I want to express how grateful I am for the opportunity
I have had to coach at this great university. When I came here 30 years
ago I intended to stay for one or two years and head back to Big 8 country
or a more traditional wrestling community, but I fell in love with the
University and the people. The administration has taken such good care
of me that I never wanted to leave. But it’s time. I’ve done it. The
commitments to go out recruiting and teaching on the mats each day in
the room necessitate a younger person take the program to a higher
level. I believe we have a strong foundation in place for that to happen
again.”
ADMINISTRATION
DICK BADDOUR
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Dick Baddour, a 1966 graduate of the University of North Carolina, was
named Director of Athletics on June 25, 1997. In his four years as director, the
UNC Department of Athletics has undergone a number of changes, yet remains
one of the premiere programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference and in the nation.
The Goldsboro, N.C., native heads a program that with 28 varsity sports is the
largest in the ACC. Carolina won seven conference championships during the
2000-01 school year, equalling the top figure in the league for the 14th consecutive
year. Eighteen Tar Heel teams competed in NCAApostseason play.
Baddour is in his 35th year of continuous service to the university. He graduated
from UNC in 1966 and was appointed Assistant Dean of Men in 1967. He
served as Assistant Dean of Admissions and Assistant Dean of the UNC School of
Law and also earned a Master of Arts degree in education prior to joining the athletic
department in 1986.
In 2001, he received the Distinguished Service Medal from the UNC General
Alumni Association.
Active in Chapel Hill community affairs, he is a past president of the Public
School Foundation and has served on the Parks and Recreation Commission. He
and his wife, Lynda, have two sons, Allen and David, and a daughter, Jennifer.
Department of Athletics Mission Statement
The Department of Athletics has offered high quality athletic programs for
many years. Through a dedicated commitment to educational interests, competitive
athletic programs, and integrity in all areas, the student-athletes, coaches and
staff strive to bring credit and recognition to the University.
The mission of the Department is to sponsor a broad-based athletic program
that provides educational and athletic opportunities for young men and women to
grow and develop, and to serve the interests of the University by complementing
and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Coaches, as educators, are foundational
to this process. In keeping with the University’s efforts to offer programs of
regional and national acclaim, the Department’s athletic programs strive for competitive
excellence within the Atlantic Coast Conference or other similar institutions.
Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite students, faculty,
staff and alumni in a common and shared experience. The Department seeks to
contribute to the diversity of the University by offering opportunities for enhanced
racial/ethnic, cultural and geographic representation.
To fulfill this mission, the Department, with the approval of the Board of
Trust, has developed principles of operation to provide guidance and direction to
its personnel. This Mission Statement and accompanying principles require strong
dedication and commitment from all who participate in, coach in and support the
Department of Athletics.
Department of Athletics Statement on Gambling
The mission of the Department of Athletics is to sponsor a broad-based athletic
program that provides educational and athletic opportunities for young men and
women to grow and develop. In keeping with the Department’s mission and the
University’s commitment to educational interests, competitive athletic programs,
and integrity in all areas, the Department of Athletics strongly condemns the influence
of gambling on intercollegiate athletics.
Student gambling is a significant issue on college campuses. Student-athlete
involvement in gambling has produced many tragic situations, both for studentathletes
and the universities they represent. Student-athletes often compete in contests
that generate interest from those involved in gambling and, possibly, organized
crime. If given the opportunity, those interests will not hesitate to exploit the
position student-athletes hold on college campuses. As such, the University of
North Carolina is firmly opposed to all forms of gambling and bribery related to
intercollegiate athletics.
To fulfill its educational obligation, the Department provides a gambling education
program to all its student-athletes and departmental staff members. This
statement and the educational program are reflections of the Department’s com-
