brand of oil-dry be stocked at the self service center.
2. Heavy Equipment and Motor transport personel have approached
the unit supply officer requesting the "Safestep" oil-dry because
the current brand stocked does not adequately nuetralize some of
the fluids commonly used by these commodities. These personel also
state that they became familiar with this product through its
utilization at the DSSC, MCB, Camp Pendelton, California.
3. In the interest of improved safety and DSSC product quality,
it is recommended that stockage of this item be carefully considered.

Manufactured by Andesite of Califomia, Safesrep outperforms
other sorbents in picking up and retaining oils, petrochemicals,
acids, caustic solutions, organic compounds, inorganic
chemicals, PCBs, and other toxic and hazardous waste.

different from other absorbents which slowly soak
up but do not retain liquids. Safestep even draws a portion of
the spill from a porous surface throu capillary action,
thereby leaving a clean, dr},, non-slick surface on any type of
interior or exterior floor or deck.
This compound cleans up a spill in one-tenth of the time it
takes for other kitty litter-type sorbents. There is no need to
let the compound sit and soak. You put the Safestep over
the spill and immediately sweep it up. This fast action prevents
the spill from spreading or penetrating and makes the
spill area immediately reusable. It also minimizes the danger
of flammability or exposure to toxic fumes.

eral acids, except hydrofluoric acid. Since it is nonsoluble
in water, it’s not to be used on water spills. Its small particle
size presents a much larger total surface area than would a
larger particle size. Thus, more particles and surface area are
available to encapsulate and hold on to a spill.
Safestep has been especially effective in dealing with
PCB-contaminated oil than other sorbents and retains more
than five times the PCB compared to other sorbents. The PCBs
held by Safestep will not migrate. This makes it an excellent
compound for storage and disposal purposes.
Although Safestep costs more per bag, it is less expensive
in the long run since only a small quantity is needed for a
spill..ad since it cleans so thoroughly, additional cleanup
may not be required.
Andesite is currently working to get a NSN designation
for Safestep. In the meantime, it can be ordered through GSA.
It is listed as contract GS-OOS-40100, special item no.

yroblem happens to be a fluid spill, you may want to consider a
:w product recently introduced into the Navy supply system
cA,ea .,e,ep. The new maeral (manutactured y Andeste of
Callfoa, Inc.) rertedly out rforms other sorbent materials
in icking up and retaining oils, petro-chemicals, acids, caustic
slutons, organic compounds, inorganic chemicals and other
toxic/hazardous materials.
What’s the difference beeen Safestep and thedsorbent
material you are now using to clean up spills? The answer lies in
:he definition of absorption and adsorption. Chances are the
rroduct you are now using works by absorption. Old Dan
"Vebster defines absorption as "to take in and make part of an
existing whole; to suck up or ke up like a sponge." In this case
iz simply means that the sorbent is full of holes arid the liquid
-ou want to pick up becomes entrapped in those holes. The
ef(ectiveness of the material depends on how porous it is and
F..w much is used. On the other hand, old Dan Webster defines
:sorption (the method by which Safestep works) as "the
adhesion in an extremely thin layer ofmolecules to the surfaces
e( solid bodies or liquids with which they come in contact."
Simply stated, this means that the liquid you are ting to
contain and/or pick up will iediately attach itself to all

Safetstep is a natural adsorbent comprised of an inert,
inorganic blend of siliceous and other minerals and is insoluble
in just about all solvents or strong neral acids except
hydrofluoric acid. According to the manufacturer, the retentive
Froperty of Safestep is what separates it from thedsorbents
most of us are familiar with. This abili to hold on contact has
positive and far-reaching ramifications for the general mainterance,
environmental and safety communities. It means that
spis can be picked up both faster and more completely than in
the past. thereby reducing cleanup time (cost) while limiting
uman exposure to spilled chemicals and environmental contafinafion.
Sgnificantly, when adsorbed by Safeste?, the
S:arSous atd contaminated wastes being stored, transported
a disposed of will be less likely to cause problems again due to
accidents, container deterioration or leaching.
The directions for using Safestep are simple and straight-

forward. The following sequence of operation is suggested by
the manufacturer (illustrated instructions for use are on each
bag):
1. Encircle spill with Safestep, especially if the spill is
spreading or of a continuous nature. Cover spill completely
with Safestep.
2. No need to wait. Simply sweep Safestep back and-forth
through the spill until the spill is completely picked up. Sweep
up and dispose. Use a stiff broom or shovel for large or very
viscous spills.

Although Safestep costs more per bag than some of the better
known dry sorbents, it may be less expensive in the long run
since a smaller quantity is needed for any given spill. Because it
cleans so thoroughly during its first application, additional
cleanup efforts may not be required. All time saved from the use
ofSafestep can be applied to more useful and productive purposes.
While we cannot recommend Safestep above all others, it
should be considered when evaluating your sorbent material
requirements.

A new product is now available for spill adsorption which immediately
picks up and retains with minimal leaching oils, petrochemicals,
acids, caustic solutions, organic compounds, inorganic chemicals, PCB’s,

I. We canr;ot, for obvious reasons, endorse a commerciai
product; however, believe that fleet units should be aware
of a product that displays the potential to aid in the daily
maintenance functions. The product is Safestep, manufactured
by Andesite of California Inc. Enclosures (i) through (5)
discuss merits of the material. Enclosure (6) depicts the NSN
and address for ordering material.
2. For information purposes, approximately one year ago a
demonstration was conducted at NAS North Island Fuel Farm
and in a CV concerning Safestep. The material performed all
functions of quickly absorbing liquid petroleum spills and
did not leave a dusty or abrasive residue. Deck surfaces
were left clean, safe and dry, and rapidly ueable. It
appears to go further and effects a noticeably greater clean
up than sorbent material presently utilized.
3. The material has been used this past year by numerous
activities, including aircraft carriers, and has proved to
be a versatile and effective material as stated by the user.
Other units, as supported by enclosures one through five,
support the use of Safestep. If you have comments con-

cerning the use or problems with the material, please inform
the Force Aircraft Maintenance Officer.

materials for SAFESTEP sorbent. Yes, SAFESTEP has gotten a lot
of attention, and it is because everywhere it haTbeen properly
presented and utilized, SAFESTEP has significantly improved Base
safety, env.ironmental and general maintenance programs.
Used properly, SAFESTEP goes further than conventional sorbents
and does a significantly better job in a fraction of the time.
To ensure everyone obtains these results, we have begun a concerted
Customer Assistance Program, including
1) Sending Customer Assistance Cards with every SAFESTEP order
order which elicit feedback and announce our toll-free
telephone numbers to facilitate communication.
2) Improving the face of the SAFESTEP bag to include
illustrated instructions for proper use (reproduction
enclosed).
3) Establishin
a network of ex-military maintenance
background ’rps’ to service the Bases and ensure
SAFESTEP is as enthusiastically accepted and widely
used everywhere as it is at those Bases where we
are represented.

Packa.q.ing.
Pacbing. When procured by the Government, 25 pounds of adsorbent material shall be packed in a multi-wail bag
with an inner polyethylene liner.
.alletization. When specified (see 5.2), the adsorbent material, packed as specified, shall be palletized on a 4-way
entry pallet in accordance with load type XV of MIL-STD-147. Each prepared load shall be bonded by film bonding
means O or P. Interlocking of loads shall be effected by reversing the pattern of each course.
4. Marking. For Government procurements only, and in addition to any special marking required by the contract or
purchase order, bags and unitized pallet loads shall be marked in accordance with MIL-STD-129.
5. NOTES
5.1 Intended use. The adsorbent material is intended to immediately adsorb spills on contact without leaving an afterfilm
on the surface.
5.2 Ordering data.
