TONIGHT’S GAME: The Iowa Cubs and the Round
Rock Express play the final game of a four-game series.
The Express are the Pacific Coast League affiliate of
the Texas Rangers. The Cubs return to Principal Park
tomorrow night to start a four-game set against the New
Orleans Zephyrs, the PCL affiliate of the Miami Marlins.
THE OLT FASHIONED WAY: Express 3B Mike Olt
started a 5-4-3 triple play in the top of the second inning
and hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second
to help lead Round Rock to a 5-2 win over the Cubs last
night. Olt had been 4-for-40 with 16 strikeouts against
the Cubs before the blast off Cubs’ starter Jake Arrieta.
Arrieta (0-2) allowed four runs on six hits in five innings
and suffered the loss. Express starter Jake Brigham (4-1)
allowed two runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings for the win.
WEB GEM: The Express turned a rare triple play when
Jae-Hoon Ha came up with runners on first and second
in the top of the second inning and hit a bouncing ball
right to Mike Olt at the third base bag. It was the first
triple play turned in the PCL this season. The last time the
Cubs hit into a triple play was June 3, 2011 at Nashville.
Current I-Cub Edwin Maysonet was the Sounds’ shortstop
that day and with runners on first and second, he made
a diving catch of a line drive off the bat of Scott Moore.
Both runners were caught off base. Ty Wright was the trail
runner at first base. The last time the Cubs turned a triple
play was August 9, 2008 at Round Rock.
DONNIE BASEBALL: SS Donnie Murphy was 1-for-3
with a pair of walks last night, extending his hitting streak
to seven games. He is batting .313 (10-for-32) with two
doubles, a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored
during this stretch. This is Murphy’s longest hitting streak
of the season.
LIKE RIDING A BIKE: 3B Josh Vitters returned from
the disabled list on Friday, after missing 55 games, and has
two hits in each of his two games back in the Cubs’ lineup.
Vitters also had two hits in his last two games before going
on the DL. In his last four games in an Iowa uniform,
Vitters is 8-for-12 (.667) with a double, two homers, three
RBI, and four runs scored. Vitters has scored a run in each
of the four games.
VS. ROUND ROCK: The Express lead this series 2-1 and
lead the season series 9-6. The Express won three of four at
home, April 8-11 and two of three at Principal Park, April
29-May 1 before the Cubs won three games in a five game
set, June 6-9. Last year, the Express won the season series
9-7 over the Cubs, but the teams split the eight games
played at Dell Diamond. Last night’s victory guaranteed
that Round Rock will win the season series over the Cubs
for the third straight year. The Express joined the PCL in
2005 and lead the all-time series 74-69, including a 40-31
advantage at home.
WHO WANTS IT?: The Cubs have lost four of their
last five games and seven of their last nine, falling to three
games under .500 for the first time since a 35-38 record on
June 19. Despite this slide, the Cubs remain tied for first
place in the American Northern Division after the Redbirds
lost at home to Oklahoma City last night. The Cubs have
had at least a share of the division lead every day since
June 20 and this is the sixth day during this stretch that
the Cubs and Redbirds have shared the lead. The Cubs
and Redbirds are the only division leaders in professional
baseball losing records.
RUNNING WILD: The Express swiped four bases against
the Cubs last night. The Cubs are last in the league in
throwing out runners attempting to steal. The Cubs have
thrown out just 14% (18-for-128) of base stealers. Omaha
is next at 20%. Reno has been the best, catching 46% of
runners trying to steal. The Cubs’ 110 stolen bases allowed
are second-most in the league. Opponents have stolen 112
bases against Nashville.
BIG MAC ATTACK: OF Darnell McDonald was 2-for-4
with an RBI last night and has hit safely in five of his last
six games. During this stretch, McDonald is batting .381
(8-for-21) with three runs scored and three RBI.
THE MAD HATTER: RH Marcus Hatley has found his
groove out of the Cubs’ bullpen. Hatley pitched a scoreless
inning last night and has not allowed a run in 6.1 innings
over his last five appearances. He has pitched scoreless
relief in nine of his last 10 appearances, allowing only two
runs in 11.1 innings over that stretch.

TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHER
#50 Barret Loux (4-4, 4.52)
Height: 6-5 • Weight: 230 • Throws: Right • Bats: Right • Born: April 6, 1989 • Opening Day Age: 23 • Resides: Houston, TX
RH Barret Loux (pronounced Lowks) makes his 17th appearance and 14th start for the Cubs tonight. Loux began the year with nine straight starts as a
member of the rotation, before making his first career relief appearance on June 12 after 55 consecutive starts in his pro career. This is his fourth straight
appearance back in the starting rotation. His last start was Thursday, July 11 at home against Albuquerque. He allowed four runs on six hits, walked four,
and struck out three in 4.1 innings and was the losing pitcher in a 4-1 loss to the ‘Topes. It was the most runs Loux had allowed in nine outings going
back to May 21. The Cubs are 9-4 when Loux starts this season.
HOME SWEET HOME: Loux’ loss in his last start was his first in nine games (eight starts) at Principal Park. He is 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA (10ER/41.2IP)
in nine games (eight starts) at home this season compared to an 0-3 record and a 9.00 ERA (22ER/22.0IP) in seven games (five starts) on the road.
Opponents are hitting .176 against Loux at Principal Park compared to a .365 mark on the road.
DEAL DO-OVER: The Cubs acquired Loux from the Texas Rangers for P Jake Brigham on November 20, 2012. The Cubs had originally acquired
Brigham from the Rangers in exchange for Geovany Soto last July, but Brigham had arm issues the final month of the season at double-A Tennessee and
the organizations agreed to adjust the deal. Baseball America ranks Loux as the 26th-best prospect in the Cubs’ organization entering this season and he
was one of 12 players invited to the Cubs inaugural Rookie Development Program in January. He ranked 20th on the Rangers’ prospect list entering 2012.
PITCHER OF THE YEAR: Loux was 14-1 with a 3.47 ERA in 25 starts for double- A Frisco in the Rangers’ organization last year. He won his first 10
starts to begin the season and struck out 55 compared to 17 walks in that stretch. He was the starting pitcher for the North in the Texas League All-Star
Game, helped Frisco reach the TL Championship Series, and was named the TL Pitcher of the Year.
STRIKING DEBUT: Loux made his pro debut with high-A Myrtle Beach in 2011 and led the Carolina League with 127 strikeouts in 109 innings. He
tallied 10 or more strikeouts four times, including a season-high 11 twice.
BACKDRAFT: The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Loux in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2010 draft, but rescinded a pre-draft contract offer after
a physical. Since he didn’t sign prior to the August 16 deadline, the Commissioner’s Office declared him a free agent as of September 1 and he signed as a
free agent with the Rangers on November 22.
AGGIE PRIDE: Loux attended Texas A&M University where he was a teammate of current Iowa starter, Brooks Raley. During his junior season in
2010, Loux went 11-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) for the Aggies. In 105 innings, he allowed 78 hits, walked 34, and struck out 136. He was
named a Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American, First-Team All-Big 12, and a semi-finalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.
vs. ROUND ROCK: Tonight is Loux’ third start against the Express this season. He made his triple-A debut on April 8 at Dell Diamond and got
knocked out after one inning. He allowed six runs on three hits and three walks. Chris McGuiness capped the rally with a grand slam. On June 8 at
Principal Park, Loux allowed one run on two hits in three innings and was held to 39 pitches in his first game back off the disabled list. The Cubs won the
game 5-4, but Loux didn’t get a decision.
