Topic Notes
Banner Navigation Course
Demonstration
Mary Ann Ferkis, OnePurdue
Training team
Next Meeting Scheduled for January 30, 2008 in STEW 204
Accessible via Blackboard Vista
• OnePurdue training courses are housed in Blackboard. User selects
the OnePurdue Institution from the list found at this URL:
https://blackboard.purdue.edu
• Each online course consists of learning units, a “course completion”
icon, sometimes printable references, and a link to an online course
evaluation to provide feedback on the course.
• As much as possible, the training team tries to write interactive
activities into each course to help engage the learners. For instance,
in the Banner system, users mouse over each icon on the Banner tool
bar to display the description. In our course, we’ve written an
interactive section which simulates that system behavior so the
learners can try it out.
• The online navigation course contains a section for Resources, which
includes printable quick reference materials, such as the “Banner
Toolbar and Keyboard Equivalents” tent card. (Staff members who
attend instructor-led classes will also receive a copy of the tent card
printed on card stock.)
• Keyboard equivalents are going to be important for those with
disabilities, and those accustomed to working in the legacy mainframe
systems.
• After completing course, learners open a “Course Completion” icon,
and confirm that they’ve completed the course. That information is
captured in the Blackboard Gradebook function, which the training
team harvests to show the course complete on our periodic reports for
training coordinators and supervisors.
• Each screen in Banner is called a “form” and is named. For instance,
SPAIDEN is the name of the form/screen used to find a person in the
system.
• Many users will access Banner via the “myPurdue” portal (Luminis.)
Some will access Banner via “Internet Native Banner” (also referred to
as INB). As a security measure, the portal reportedly times out after
20 minutes, but Dwight Snethen checked with the ESA team and
found the specific time-out strategy has not yet been finalized. We’d

Information
like to table this issue until we have a better idea which users will be
affected and the specific time-out interval has been determined.
• This course is now available for use, and Release 3 learners are
currently going through it. If this committee would like to go through
the course now, we’d be happy to register you. Let Connie Bilyeu
know.
Review the tiered user support model under discussion for Student Systems,
i.e., whom do you call for help? And then what? (Refer to the MS PowerPoint
file sent in email attached to the meeting agenda.)
Tier 0: self help resources
Tier 1: ITaP Customer Service Center, or DFA office for student support, or
regional campus central support for regional campus staff
Tier 2: One Purdue Project Team
Tier 3: Vendor
• This model was adapted from a successful support model used during
implementation WebCT Vista.
• Participants reviewing the strategy include: OnePurdue ESA project
team, Registrar’s office, Bursar’s office, Division of Financial Aid,
Admissions, Student Services Technology and Assessment, and
Purdue North Central campus.
• Will be using Remedy task tracking system to support cross-functional
sharing of tasks, for quickest resolution.
• Current status: developing Release 3 knowledgebase articles,
targeted to both support staff and to end users.
• Knowledgebase articles are being drawn from system and process
documentation being developed at OnePurdue.
• Planned implementation is Feb ``, with Release 3 Go Live.
How will students and other myPurdue portal users get help? How can we
smooth their transition from SSINFO to myPurdue? Do PNC students need
campus-specific resources?
Have begun working with functional areas to develop this strategy.
Will begin by adding a new statement contingent
Cognos training will start next week (mainly for Financial Aid staff) and
continue thru go-live and beyond.
• Training is currently planned for twice a month, and 7 sections are
already scheduled through end April.
• One class will be held at North Central, and given sufficient numbers
of learners, trainers could travel to the other regional campuses too.
• Sarah Bauer is the contact if you wish to propose candidates for this
course.
• (Also see Jan. 7, 2008, Purdue Today article titled “OnePurdue moves
ahead on student systems; training begins for student reporting tool.”)
• Coming up next week, piloting these classes:
• Cognos 8 Report Author
• Introduction to Budget Preparation and the Budget Planning
System (the Purdue budget will be done in the OnePurdue system
this year for the first time.
• Financial Aid “Core” Training
• In the process of identifying ESA Training Coordinators (see Connie
Bilyeu’s email of 1/16/08, document titled: “OnePurdue Training
Coordinators’ Role”) Will do one-on-one orientations for those who need
to register learners in courses now. Will do group orientation later, for
remaining coordinators.
Future Topics
Financial Aid staff at W.L. and PNC are successfully going through the Banner
navigation and Financial Aid Overview courses; they’re scheduled for “Core”
training classes coming up in the next three weeks, prior to slated February
11, 2008, Release 3 go live.
• Overview of the Enrollment & Student Affairs security/role assignment
strategy (guest speaker Dee Schlatter; to be scheduled after Release 3
