3.8 Artificially sweetened products<br />

The consumption of artificial sweeteners and artificially sweetened products is shown in Table 3-13.<br />

Based on the two record days, 58% of the young children consumed artificially sweetened products,<br />

mainly ‘Non-alcoholic beverages’ and ‘Yogurt(drinks)’. In total 11% of these food groups consumed<br />

were artificially sweetened products. The 4 to 6 year-old children consumed absolutely and relatively<br />

more artificially sweetened beverages than the 2 to 3 year-olds (see Appendix B Table B-9, Table B-10<br />

and Table B-11).<br />

3.9 Dietary supplements<br />

In total, 43% of the total study population (aged 2 to 6 years) took dietary supplements on one or both<br />

survey days. Dietary supplement use was about twice as high among the 2 to 3 year-olds (62%) than<br />

the 4 to 6 year-olds (30%). The most commonly taken supplement by 2 to 3 year-olds was vitamin D<br />

supplements; 35 to 44% of this group used a vitamin D supplement as such (Table 3-15). Vitamin D<br />

supplementation of 5 μg/day is recommended for 1 to 4 year-old children in the Netherlands. 30 Only<br />

58% of the 2 to 3 year-old boys and 61% of girls in this age group received a supplement containing<br />

vitamin D. One in five children received multivitamins/ minerals, regardless their age (see Table 3-15).<br />
