Program Description: The Academy <strong>of</strong> Natural Sciences is a natural history museum featuring<br />

diorama halls and exhibits on topics such as dinosaurs, mummies, and current Academy research.<br />

Daily teacher-naturalist presentations happen every day on the gallery floor and are free with<br />

admission. Lessons, behind-the-scenes tours, and other special programs can be reserved for an<br />

extra fee. A trip to the Academy provides students with an opportunity to expand their science<br />

education and exercise their critical thinking and reading skills.<br />

Visitors can pick up floor plans and daily schedules, information on upcoming events, and brochures<br />

for special programs (such as museum overnights or birthday parties). Teachers and program<br />

instructors receive pre- and post- visit activity materials with reserved lessons.<br />

Audience: The Museum is appropriate for all ages, but the core audience tends to be pre-K to 6 th<br />

grade. The maximum audience for a lesson is 35 students.<br />

Duration: The length <strong>of</strong> a museum trip is flexible but lessons are scheduled for 35 minutes for pre K<br />

– 2 nd graders, 40 minutes for 3 rd -5 th graders, and 50 minutes for 6 th graders and above. The Academy<br />

recommends at least one hour <strong>of</strong> free time for exploration <strong>of</strong> the exhibits.<br />

Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Saturday – Sunday and<br />

Holidays. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.<br />

Fees: Group rates for museum admission are $7.00 per person (individual rates are $10 for children<br />

and $12 for adults). Group rates for basic admission with a visit to the Butterfly exhibit are $8.50 per<br />

person. Supplemental programs may have additional fees; for example, lessons cost $75 each. One<br />

chaperone over the age <strong>of</strong> 18 is required for every 10 students. Admission is complementary for<br />

chaperones. Lunch packages are available at an additional cost.<br />

Program Description: Adventure Aquarium is a self-guided facility, allowing for groups to explore<br />

200,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> sea life. Enjoy the adventure <strong>of</strong> a lifetime when you visit the West African<br />

River Experience featuring hippopotamuses, porcupines and over 20 species <strong>of</strong> African birds in a<br />

free-flight aviary; come tooth to tooth with sharks in a 40-foot walk-through tunnel immersed in<br />

Shark Realm; get interactive by touching stingrays, jellyfish, sea stars, and even sharks in our Touch-<br />

A-Shark exhibit - <strong>of</strong>fering hands-on fun for kids <strong>of</strong> all ages.<br />

Behind-the Scenes <strong>Tours</strong> can accommodate 20 people per tour. Learning Adventures classroom<br />

sessions can accommodate 30 children & 5 adults per session. Theater-style “Jurassic Shark<br />

Program” can accommodate 150 people per session.<br />

Audience: Groups <strong>of</strong> all ages and sizes are welcome. 1 chaperone per 10 youths is recommended.<br />

Duration: Tour is self-guided, but we recommend at least 2-2½ hours for your visit.<br />

Hours: Adventure Aquarium is open 9:30am – 5:00pm, 365 days a year.<br />

Fee: Discounted rates for groups <strong>of</strong> 20+ are $11.50 per child, 1 complimentary chaperone per 10<br />

youths, $11.50 per additional adult. Summer group rates apply for visits during June-August, please<br />

call for details. All groups require an advanced reservation. Lunch packages are available at an<br />

additional cost.<br />

Public Transportation Access: Via the RiverLINE, PATCO High Speed Line or to the Walter Rand<br />

Transportation Center via NJ TRANSIT. The RiverLink Ferry also connects Adventure Aquarium with<br />

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many is a mural worth? And if this city’s walls could talk,<br />

what stories would they tell? The City <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, in partnership with the<br />

African American Museum in Philadelphia has launched an exciting new project, the Albert M.<br />

Greenfield African American Iconic Images Collection Tour.<br />

Audience: Learning through the Arts programs are for all ages. Collection Tour is for students in<br />

grades 7-12.<br />

Duration: Learning through the Arts lasts 1 hour (includes workshop and guided tour). Collection<br />

Tour lasts 3 hours total (2 hours = mural <strong>of</strong> African American <strong>Tours</strong>, plus 1 hour = tour <strong>of</strong> African<br />

American Museum)<br />

Program Description: Touch down with your class or group at the American Helicopter Museum and<br />

Education Center for a one-<strong>of</strong>-a-kind experience. Kids can climb aboard helicopters <strong>of</strong> all kinds for a<br />

truly unique hands-on experience. The museum’s display <strong>of</strong> over 35 helicopters, autogiros, and<br />

convertiplanes is sure to fascinate visitors <strong>of</strong> all ages.<br />

These programs make learning about the science <strong>of</strong> flight fun and memorable. The Museum<br />

features many <strong>of</strong> the earliest rotary aircraft including the prototype for the first mass-produced<br />

helicopter. Also on display is the only tilt-rotor Osprey V-22 on public exhibition in the world, as well<br />

as a number <strong>of</strong> experimental aircrafts.<br />

The Museum <strong>of</strong>fers scheduled tours and education programs for students throughout the year.<br />

Audience: All ages are welcome.<br />

Duration: Please call in advance to discuss the specifics <strong>of</strong> your visit.<br />

Hours: Monday and Tuesday: Open for group tours and classes by appointment only<br />

Program Description: The American Swedish Historical Museum <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> programs that<br />

include: New Sweden Colony; Vikings; Lucia Festival; Orienteering; Pippi Longstocking; and Swedish<br />

Holiday Traditions. Each program includes a museum tour, art project, and hands-on learning<br />

activities.<br />

The programs promote listening, decision-making, problem-solving, reasoning, and other skills.<br />

Brochures are available upon request.<br />

Audience: Each program is flexible and can be tailored for any age group. General guidelines are:<br />

New Sweden Colony is for students in grades 3-12; Vikings is for students in grades 3-8; Orienteering<br />

is for students in grades 4-12; Lucia is for grades K-8; and Pippi Longstocking is for children in grades<br />

preK-2. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 15 children is required and a maximum <strong>of</strong> 60 children can be accommodated<br />

at one time.<br />

Duration: A typical program is 1.5 hours but can be tailored to individual groups’ needs. Groups can<br />

combine programs or schedule multiple visits. Lunch: Brown bag lunchroom facilities are available<br />

by reservation. Food and beverages are not for sale at the museum.<br />

Program Description: Historic home and garden <strong>of</strong> the Bartrams, 18 th century America’s pioneer<br />

family <strong>of</strong> naturalists, botanists, and explorers is the perfect field trip destination. The 45-acre park<br />

and garden is located on the grassy banks <strong>of</strong> the Schuylkill River provides a unique and fun outdoor<br />

classroom for quality education programs in natural science, colonial history and art.<br />

Programs are available all year for pre-school through high school students. Choose from a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

seasonal programs including tree identification, cider-making, Schuylkill Study, painting nature,<br />

honey bees, bird walks, medicinal herbs and more. Call the Education Department at (215) 729-<br />

5281, ext. 104, for detailed descriptions and reservations.<br />

Classroom lessons are included, and each lesson has matching PA curriculum standards.<br />

Audience: Pre K-12 (programs vary for ages 14-18).<br />

Duration: 2 hour lesson.<br />

Hours: 10am-5pm, daily. Closed for City-observed holidays. Other times and days can be scheduled<br />

with advance notice. Reservations are required.<br />

Fees: School <strong>Tours</strong>: $5.00 per student (15 student min, 90 student max). One free admission with<br />

provided free <strong>of</strong> charge. <strong>Tours</strong> promote reading and listening skills. Groups are encouraged to call<br />

to learn about upcoming events that may enhance their visit. There is also a gift shop on site that<br />

sells “Philadelphiana” including postcards, jewelry, clothing, dolls, and various collectibles.<br />

Audience: All ages are welcome.<br />

Duration: <strong>Tours</strong> run 15 to 20 minutes.<br />

Hours: The Betsy Ross House is open daily, Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10a-5p. Closed on<br />

Program Description: The Camden Children's Garden provides a horticultural experience with<br />

opportunities for creative and imaginative play. The 4-acre interactive Garden includes the<br />

Philadelphia Eagles Four Seasons Butterfly House and Education Center, a Butterfly Garden, Railroad<br />

Garden, Dinosaur Garden, Picnic Garden, Tree House and Maze, Tropical Exhibit, and Storybook<br />

Gardens. Also available are three amusements: the Arrow River Train Ride, Carousel and the Spring<br />

Butterfly Ride.<br />

On-Site Garden Lessons can be scheduled to enhance Garden visits.<br />

Distance Learning Lessons are also available via IP lines.<br />

Garden Festival for Schools are available in Spring, targeting 3rd-6th graders.<br />

Audience: All are welcome but exhibits are geared towards younger visitors.<br />

Duration: Flexible.<br />

Program Description: Through the lens <strong>of</strong> local history, Chester County Historical Society tells the<br />

story <strong>of</strong> America's past. Chester County Historical Society’s collections are the stuff <strong>of</strong> history--<br />

letters, diaries, tools, toys, photos and furnishings <strong>of</strong> days gone by. Programs are centered on the<br />

Early Settlement, American Revolution, Underground Railroad and Civil War as it happened in<br />

Chester County. In addition, walking tours, teacher workshops and community outreach programs<br />

are available.<br />

A variety <strong>of</strong> educational programs are available to teachers and youth programs based on their<br />

particular needs and interests. Museum visits, classroom outreach and traveling trunks are <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

All programs are aligned with the Pennsylvania State Standards.<br />

Audience: Programs are designed for students in elementary and middle schools, and especially for<br />

students in these schools in Chester County. Based on the program selection, the maximum group<br />

size is up to 50 students at a time.<br />

Duration: Based on the program selection, programs last from one and one half hours to two hours.<br />

Hours: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, Wednesday – Saturday. Closed Christmas, Easter, and all national<br />

holidays.<br />

Fees: $5.00 per student per program. One chaperone for every ten students is required and<br />

admission is free for chaperones. Walking tours require one chaperone for every five students.<br />

Public Transportation Access: Yes. Local bus service from Upper Darby, Wilmington, Coatesville,<br />

King <strong>of</strong> Prussia, and Exton.<br />

Program Descriptions: Wok 'N Walk <strong>Tours</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chinatown</strong> give students an opportunity to join<br />

celebrity chef <strong>Joseph</strong> <strong>Poon</strong>, and his team, for a walking tour <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia's <strong>Chinatown</strong> – and<br />

lunch! Students learn how fortunes are added to fortune cookies, see live fish at an Asian fish<br />

market, see a Chinese Temple, hear about the community's rich history, and walk through the<br />

Chinese Friendship Gate.<br />

Audience: Ages 5 to adult. Group size can be 5 to 100 people.<br />

Duration: Outings last for a total <strong>of</strong> 3 hours (2 hour tour followed by meal).<br />

Hours: Groups can schedule their visit for any day <strong>of</strong> the week.<br />

Fees: The Wok 'N Walk Tour costs $28 per child for a kid-sized lunch; $30 per teenager for a fullsized<br />

lunch. Chaperones pay $35 for the tour and an adult-sized lunch. All prices plus 10% gratuity<br />

for meal service.<br />

Program Description: The Clay Studio <strong>of</strong>fers guided tours <strong>of</strong> its entire facility including its galleries,<br />

school, and studio spaces. It also <strong>of</strong>fers artist demonstrations, which typically include use <strong>of</strong> a<br />

potter’s wheel. <strong>Tours</strong> are designed to expose each participant to the vast range <strong>of</strong> expression<br />

possible with the use <strong>of</strong> clay, from everyday objects to abstract sculpture.<br />

<strong>Tours</strong> must be scheduled two weeks in advance.<br />

Audience: <strong>Tours</strong> are designed for both adults and children six years or older. Maximum <strong>of</strong> 15<br />

Duration: Timing is flexible but consists <strong>of</strong> approximately 45 minutes for the tour and approximately<br />

Program Description: Cliveden is a historical site that focuses on the Colonial America’s Struggle for<br />

Independence, and the African American Struggle for Freedom.<br />

Cliveden welcomes student groups at any level for tours <strong>of</strong> the site <strong>of</strong> the 1777 Battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Germantown and Benjamin Chew’s Georgian summer home. This program looks at the conflicting<br />

and complex history <strong>of</strong> a nation founded on liberty and inequality.<br />

Students will view “Emancipating Cliveden,” a short video about Cliveden’s place in American and<br />

Philadelphia history. The can also take in Cliveden’s new exhibit: Life, Liberty & the Pursuit <strong>of</strong><br />

Happiness? The video and the exhibit explore the lives <strong>of</strong> the Chew’s, the enslaved, the immigrant<br />

labor and the soldiers that fought in the American Revolution. This is followed by a tour <strong>of</strong> the<br />

battlefield and the main house. Goes great with Philadelphia School District Curriculum!<br />

Audience: Middle School Students. Maximum <strong>of</strong> 30 students per group.<br />

Program Description: The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) is a non-collecting art<br />

museum dedicated to the advancement <strong>of</strong> contemporary art. The DCCA’s mission is to present<br />

exhibitions, <strong>of</strong>fer exposure to the creative process, provide educational opportunities and extend<br />

innovative programs to a diverse community.<br />

The DCCA at 35,000 sq. ft., houses seven galleries, 26 artists' studios, a gift shop, high-tech<br />

auditorium, and a classroom. On the rejuvenated Wilmington Riverfront, DCCA presents over thirty<br />

exhibitions annually <strong>of</strong> regionally, nationally and internationally recognized artists.<br />

DCCA <strong>of</strong>fers educational gallery tours to school and community groups. Follow your gallery tour with<br />

a DCCA Artist Studio visit or an art-based Hands-On Workshop.<br />

Program Description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is a prison museum. Eastern State is<br />

America's most historic prison. Opened in 1829, Eastern State acted as the world's first true<br />

penitentiary, distinguished as a prison founded on the premise <strong>of</strong> inmate reform, rather than<br />

punishment.<br />

Eastern State Penitentiary <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> educational opportunities for schools, groups, and<br />

families. School groups that choose to visit Eastern State will find tours that meet a variety <strong>of</strong> social<br />

studies academic standards for middle and high school levels. Families who visit will also find<br />

educational opportunities for children. Eastern State Penitentiary <strong>of</strong>fers a Kids’ Guide, free with<br />

admission, for children ages 7-12, as well as weekend events such as Prison Break Weekend, where<br />

children can imagine how they would make a prison “escape-pro<strong>of</strong>.” Eastern State is continually<br />

updating the <strong>of</strong>ferings for both schools and families, so please call for the most current information.<br />

Audience: Programs are available for students <strong>of</strong> all ages, however it is not recommended for<br />

children under the age <strong>of</strong> 7. Minimum group size is 15 people. The maximum group size that can be<br />

accommodated is 125 people.<br />

Duration: Private group tours are about one hour and fifteen minutes in duration. After concluding<br />

the private group tour, visitors are welcome to explore the site at their own pace for the duration <strong>of</strong><br />

business hours.<br />

Hours: 10:00am – 5:00pm, seven days a week. The last recommended time for admission is 4:00 pm.<br />

Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.<br />

Fees: General group rates: $7.00 per student, $10.00 per adult, and $9.00 per senior citizen. One<br />

chaperone is suggested for every 15 students, and is admitted for free.<br />

Program Description: The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, housed in a National Historic<br />

science programs for families and school and summer programs for pre-K to college age students.<br />

Hands-on thematic programs for pre-K through college level explore the past, present and future <strong>of</strong><br />

water, water quality, the urban watershed and 21st century solutions to stormwater management.<br />

Audience: Appropriate for all ages. All learning and developmental levels, integrated curriculum as<br />

well as special lab-based science programs. We prefer 30-40 people per group visit at one time.<br />

Required ratio <strong>of</strong> adult chaperones to children is 1:10.<br />

Program Description: The Bucks County Historical Society is a dynamic, audience-driven educational<br />

organization that involves visitors in meaningful explorations <strong>of</strong> the past, present, and future<br />

through active engagement with its dramatic buildings and historical collections. Visitors are<br />

encouraged to view history from multiple perspectives and multiple disciplines, and in relation to<br />

their own communities and their own lives. The organization <strong>of</strong>fers innovative, participatory and<br />

changing experiences using its own and other private or public collections.<br />

Henry Mercer (1856-1930) built Fonthill as his home between 1908 and 1912. The concrete castle<br />

boasts over 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces and more than 200 windows <strong>of</strong> varying shapes and sizes. The<br />

interior walls, floors and ceilings are adorned with an incredible array <strong>of</strong> Mercer's original<br />

handcrafted tiles. Tiles, prints, and objects from around the world show the creativity <strong>of</strong> this native<br />

Bucks County native. Guided tours are available as is programming specifically designed for a<br />

younger crowd.<br />

Castle <strong>of</strong> Ideas - Learn how Henry Mercer developed his ideas to build this unique castle<br />

home (3 rd – 6 th grade; Maximum 44 students)<br />

Program Description: National Historic Landmark that was the site <strong>of</strong> a Revolutionary War battle in<br />

the fall <strong>of</strong> 1777 and saw the largest bombardment the North American Continent had ever seen.<br />

Built in 1771, the original River Wall is still intact. The remainder <strong>of</strong> the Fort was re-built in 1794 -<br />

1803 and has 15 historic buildings. The Fort is located on 42 acres <strong>of</strong> park-like ground, directly on<br />

the Delaware River and affords a magnificent view <strong>of</strong> the river in our picnic area adjacent to the<br />

Main Gate <strong>of</strong> the Fort.<br />

Fort Mifflin <strong>of</strong>fers a series <strong>of</strong> unique education programs for the enrichment <strong>of</strong> students in Grades K<br />

through 12. Our programs are designed to meet State and National curriculum guidelines. A<br />

Teachers Guide is provided in advance <strong>of</strong> your trip to the Fort. Our standard package includes a Fort<br />

Program Description: The GSDM <strong>of</strong>fers groups a wonderful place to discover! Every exhibit invites<br />

can reserve an indoor space to eat lunch or choose to sit outside in the garden. For an extra fee, the<br />

GSDM can also provide a workshop for the children where they can make an activity to take home.<br />

The Museum encourages science discovery and exploration. Visiting children are encouraged to use<br />

their creativity and imagination. Also, individualized workshops can focus on science, art, language,<br />

music, and more!<br />

How does a pretzel get its shape? Learn these and other fun facts as you watch potato chips,<br />

pretzels, tortilla chips, cheese curls and popcorn being made right before your eyes! You can even<br />

sample potato chips, fresh and warm from our cookers.<br />

School curriculum is available for any group. Tour guides review the history <strong>of</strong> Herr’s and answer any<br />

questions that you have about snack foods. Use math skills to see how many bags <strong>of</strong> chips are made<br />

in an hour, a day, a week, a month or a year. Plus other fun math facts! See how Herr’s recycles too!<br />

Program Description: Visit Historic RittenhouseTown and make paper at the site <strong>of</strong> North America’s<br />

first paper mill! Built by William and Nicholas Rittenhouse in 1690, the Rittenhouse paper mill<br />

supplied paper for maps, newspapers, books and legal documents. Students will tour this early<br />

American industrial village and make paper using the same tools and techniques used by the<br />

Rittenhouse family. One program option includes Colonial cooking with a costumed interpreter in<br />

Historic RittenhouseTown’s original 18 th century bake house. Students will assist in the preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> a typical Colonial dish.<br />

This interactive program teaches students about 18 th century American life in an authentic<br />

landscape. It stresses the importance <strong>of</strong> the Rittenhouse family’s contributions to the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> American industry and their role in freeing the Colonies from dependence on foreign goods.<br />

Program Description: At Insectarium you get to see the good guys, the bad guys, and the<br />

understand as much as possible to make wise choices in our life.<br />

The Insectarium is the country’s largest exhibited all-arthropod museum. The collections are from all<br />

over the world. An extensive live collection demonstrates natural habitats <strong>of</strong> many unusual insects,<br />

tarantulas, scorpions and crustaceans.<br />

Bring your group <strong>of</strong> 15-180 and receive a program given by a museum educator at no additional cost<br />

Program Description: Once a thriving burial site, Laurel Hill Cemetery is now a National Historic<br />

Landmark, scenic park-like landscape, and one <strong>of</strong> the most important cemeteries in the United<br />

States. Laurel Hill Cemetery celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2011. The Friends <strong>of</strong> Laurel Hill<br />

Cemetery was founded in 1978 as a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organization to support and promote the site through<br />

interpretive programming, community outreach, preservation projects and fundraising.<br />

Laurel Hill Cemetery is open daily with free admission for self-guided tours and recreational<br />

activities. Laurel Hill <strong>of</strong>fers a convenient Cell Phone Tour, highlighting many <strong>of</strong> the Cemetery's most<br />

notable historical figures, which can be accessed free <strong>of</strong> charge. Complimentary activity packs and<br />

maps for children can be picked up in the <strong>of</strong>fice. In addition, the Cemetery provides a diverse array<br />

<strong>of</strong> public tours, programs and workshops throughout the year covering a multitude <strong>of</strong> interests and<br />

subjects across all age groups.<br />

Youth programs are regularly provided to school and community groups. Each <strong>of</strong> these programs is<br />

tailored to meet the individual needs and interests <strong>of</strong> the group and, in addition to tours <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Cemetery, include activities such as scavenger hunts, arts and crafts projects, and historical games.<br />

Laurel Hill Cemetery's youth programs can be focused OR comprehensive, covering subjects ranging<br />

from history, math, science, language, culture and art.<br />

the activities <strong>of</strong> bumblebees. A complete calendar <strong>of</strong> events and all opportunities for young people<br />

Program Description: The Bucks County Historical Society is a dynamic, audience-driven educational<br />

organization that involves visitors in meaningful explorations <strong>of</strong> the past, present, and future<br />

through active engagement with its dramatic buildings and historical collections. Visitors are<br />

encouraged to view history from multiple perspectives and multiple disciplines, and in relation to<br />

their own communities and their own lives. The organization <strong>of</strong>fers innovative, participatory and<br />

changing experiences using its own and other private or public collections.<br />

The Mercer Museum is a concrete castle that houses displays <strong>of</strong> the furnishings, folk art, and<br />

implements <strong>of</strong> early America. Children can marvel at the whaling boat, carriages, and an antique fire<br />

engine as well as the 60 crafts and trades that are exhibited. The Museum was completed in 1916 as<br />

a home for Henry Mercer's collection <strong>of</strong> early American everyday objects and is now a National<br />

Program Description: The James A. Michener Art Museum is an independent, non-pr<strong>of</strong>it cultural<br />

Bucks County region. The Museum is named for Doylestown's most famous son, the Pulitzer-Prize<br />

winning writer and supporter <strong>of</strong> the arts who had first dreamed <strong>of</strong> a regional art museum in the<br />

early 1960's. Educational programming includes free concerts, docent-led tours, lectures, a<br />

children’s art gallery, gallery talks, and artist studio tours.<br />

Museum lessons at the Michener Art Museum are an introduction to the fascinating world <strong>of</strong> art<br />

and museums and are tailored to fit various age groups, from preschool through grade 12. Museum<br />

lessons include standards-based age-appropriate interactive gallery discussions, creative visual<br />

analysis and educational activities. Staff will work with programs to design a museum lesson that is<br />

tailored to specific needs.<br />

Art Door programs provide more in depth opportunities for students to explore the museum’s<br />

permanent collection and changing exhibitions and respond through visual arts and language arts<br />

activities, including painting, drawing, discussion, writing, and drama. Lessons are taught by trained<br />

museum educators and certified teachers in the museum galleries and art studio. Lessons can be<br />

customized to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the program. All lessons meet National and State Standards.<br />

Audience: Programming is available for children and youth <strong>of</strong> all ages. The maximum group size is<br />

100 people.<br />

Program Description: The Morris Arboretum integrates art, science and the humanities in a 92-acre,<br />

Victorian landscape garden <strong>of</strong> winding paths, streams, flowers and special garden areas, that holds<br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> woody plants, and some <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia's oldest, rarest, and largest trees.<br />

Special programs include: "Tree Adventure Tour," which teaches students responsibility for the<br />

environment, "Food Factory" and "Trees Where We Live" which shows visitors how trees work, what<br />

they do for us, and how we can take care <strong>of</strong> them.<br />

All tours are based on Pennsylvania Department <strong>of</strong> Education standards. A complete tour listing,<br />

pre- and post-visit activities, and objectives for each tour are listed on the website.<br />

Audience: <strong>Tours</strong> are available for all ages, curriculum based tours for pre-K -7th grade and adult<br />

tours for high school students. The Arboretum can accommodate any school-age group, and<br />

Program Description: The Peter Wentz Farmstead is an 18th century Pennsylvania German historic<br />

site. We <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> hands-on activities for students <strong>of</strong> all ages on a wide array <strong>of</strong> topics<br />

pertaining to the Farmstead - the arts, sciences, and history. We will work with you to create a<br />

program that fulfills the requirements <strong>of</strong> your curriculum and addresses the interests <strong>of</strong> your group.<br />

Programs typically last 90 minutes, unless otherwise stated and some may be altered to be taught at<br />

your location:<br />

“Charlie Needs a Cloak” program - This storybook program tells how Charlie’s cloak, quite worn from<br />

wear, is replaced using wool from his sheep. Primary school students (Preschool-2nd) learn about<br />

the process <strong>of</strong> making cloth from sheep’s wool. The students will enjoy related hands-on activities<br />

and a tour <strong>of</strong> the farm. A first floor tour <strong>of</strong> the historic farm house is also available.<br />

Colonial Life program - Discover what life was like during the colonial era. Designed for grades 3 and<br />

above, the students will tour the farm and historic house to learn about home life during the 18th<br />

century. They will also participate in a hands-on game and take a close look at some reproduced<br />

items typical <strong>of</strong> the era.<br />

Decorative Arts program - This program introduces students in 3rd grade and above to the idea <strong>of</strong><br />

proper museum etiquette and decorative arts in a hands-on format. Learn about the architecture<br />

and material culture <strong>of</strong> the colonial period by observing these features during a tour <strong>of</strong> the historic<br />

house.<br />

Colonial Day program - Bring sixty or more <strong>of</strong> your 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade students to the<br />

Farmstead for a day full <strong>of</strong> hands-on activities. They will learn about many <strong>of</strong> the crafts and trades<br />

typical <strong>of</strong> the 18th century and rotate through a number <strong>of</strong> hands-on stations conducted by<br />

costumed interpreters. After a brief break for lunch, the students will then continue with their<br />

lessons before returning back to school later in the afternoon.<br />

Comparative Histories programs - Spend the day visiting the Peter Wentz Farmstead and another <strong>of</strong><br />

the region’s historic treasures– Morgan Log House or Pennypacker Mills.<br />

Audience: All ages! Ideally, no more than 60 students plus chaperones for a particular program. (1<br />

chaperone required for every 10 students)<br />

Duration: Programs last from 1 hour to a full day (4-5 hours).<br />

the storm drains in the street? Students find out first- hand on a fascinating trip to the Philadelphia<br />

Water Department's Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant where they get up-close to every<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> the sewage treatment process. History and current environmental issues are included.<br />

Audience: Both water treatment tours are appropriate for children in fourth grade through adults.<br />

The preferred number <strong>of</strong> students in a group is 15 through 25. Groups as small as 10 or as large as<br />

"one class" are accommodated. Two tours could be run simultaneously for larger groups.<br />

Program Description: Founded in 1855, the Wagner Free Institute <strong>of</strong> Science is dedicated to<br />

providing public education in science. Completed in 1865, the Institute’s National Historic Landmark<br />

building is essentially unchanged since the late 19 th century and features a historic lecture hall and<br />

an exhibition hall filled with specimens including fossils, sea stars, shells, coral, minerals, skeletons,<br />

and mounted animal skins displayed in original wood and glass cabinets.<br />

The Wagner Institute <strong>of</strong>fers free natural history programs to visiting groups in preschool through<br />

high school. All programs include an interactive lesson, real natural history specimens to touch, and<br />

a scavenger hunt in the museum gallery. Lesson topics for students in 2 nd grade and above include:<br />

Animal Adaptations, Butterflies & Moths, Dinosaurs & Fossils, Evolution, Food Chains, Insects &<br />

Other Arthropods, Ocean Life, Rocks & Minerals, Skeletons, Pollinator Power, and Urban Ecology.<br />

Programs designed specifically for younger visitors include: Animal Babies, Animals in Winter,<br />

Daytime and Nighttime Animals, Dinosaurs, Insects, and Sort Like a Scientist. All lessons are aligned<br />

to the Benchmarks for Science Literacy and the National and Pennsylvania Science Education<br />

Standards.<br />

Audience: All ages are welcome. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 10 children is required to schedule a program. The<br />

Institute can accommodate a maximum <strong>of</strong> 30 children for preschool through 1 st grade groups, and a<br />

maximum <strong>of</strong> 60 children for groups <strong>of</strong> 2 nd graders and older students. One adult chaperone is<br />

required for every 5 children under the age <strong>of</strong> 8 and for every 10 children 8 years <strong>of</strong> age and older.<br />

Duration: Visits for students in 2 nd grade and above last 1½ hours. Visits for students in preschool<br />

through 1 st grade last 1 hour.<br />

Hours: 9:00-4:00, Tuesday through Friday. Closed on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving,<br />

Christmas, New Year’s Day, and the last two weeks in August. The Institute is <strong>of</strong>ten booked to<br />

capacity with programs, so it is best to schedule your visit several weeks in advance to reserve your<br />

preferred date and time.<br />

Fees: Museum admission and all programs are free, but donations are appreciated. The suggested<br />

donation is $5 per child for a 1½ hour program (2 nd grade and up) and $3 per child for a 1 hour<br />

Program Description: Winterthur, the former home <strong>of</strong> Henry Francis du Pont, features an<br />

outstanding collection <strong>of</strong> early American decorative arts, changing exhibitions, 900 acres <strong>of</strong> gardens,<br />

and a 3-acre garden for children called Enchanted Woods. Winterthur <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> on-site<br />

programs for children and youth all emphasizing hands-on, small-group learning with curricula<br />

incorporating different learning styles and needs. All programs are explore the garden or "life long<br />

ago" while rotating through several different areas <strong>of</strong> the museum.<br />

Winterthur's programs were developed with an awareness <strong>of</strong> the standards <strong>of</strong> learning outcomes in<br />

effect in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Trained staff present increasingly<br />

complex material at age-appropriate levels through a menu <strong>of</strong> programs that can accommodate<br />

either specific grade-level audiences or groups encompassing a wide age range. Please contact the<br />

organization for more information on specific programming.<br />

Audience: Programs are available for children and youth in preschool through college. The<br />

maximum group size for the Museum is 72 people.<br />

Duration: Programs range in length from 1 hour and thirty minutes to two hours. Groups who<br />

Program Description: The Woodlands is an active rural cemetery <strong>of</strong> 54 acres in West Philadelphia<br />

that was developed in 1840 on the last 92 acres <strong>of</strong> the estate <strong>of</strong> William Hamilton. Hamilton’s house,<br />

now serving as cemetery’s <strong>of</strong>fices, still stands on the grounds and is one <strong>of</strong> the most significant 18 th -<br />

century neoclassical mansions in America. The cemetery was designed around Hamilton’s mansion<br />

and carriage house/stable with roads and brick paths. Hamilton’s original gardens, the most<br />

important in America according to Thomas Jefferson, were altered for the cemetery, but an<br />

arboretum <strong>of</strong> over 1000 trees <strong>of</strong> 750 species and great age create a park-like setting for visitation.<br />

The mausoleums and grave monuments range from the tallest cemetery obelisk in the country to<br />

elegant sculpted angels and tombstones.<br />

Children, teenagers, and adults use the cemetery for biking, walking, jogging, and viewing nature<br />

and statuary everyday from dawn to dusk. A Distinguished Persons list <strong>of</strong> those buried in the<br />

cemetery can be picked up at the <strong>of</strong>fice and used for self-guided tours. Many teachers and<br />

educational institutions use the site to explain colonial history, architectural history, biological<br />

sciences, genealogy research, and the history <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia’s development through citizens buried<br />

in the cemetery.<br />

Audience: Special tours <strong>of</strong> the mansion can be arranged for any type <strong>of</strong> audience. Less than 50<br />
