While Monaco was a show to remember for all
the right reasons, the sad events prior to Fort
Lauderdale make it impossible to use as a market
thermometer. However, from the order books and
my own experience in the brokerage business,
there are strong indications that the market is
picking up across the board. The Holland Yachting
Group is all about promoting Dutch quality and
innovation to consumers and industry around the
world. That is why we (will) also attend boat shows
in places as diverse as Dubai and Moscow.
In addition, such events allow us to stay fully up to
speed with the latest developments and changing
market needs, which in turn ensures we continue
to meet people’s expectations.
A good example is included in this issue of Yacht
Valley, as more of our members expand into the
semi-custom market. Of particular
interest is the development of
projects in the 35 to 55-metre
range, which has traditionally been
the domain of fully customised
builds. As well as helping cut costs
and production time, this move
sees yards using the experience
gained in many years of building to
develop a complete and balanced
product, while maintaining
sufficient flexibility to meet specific
owner requirements. The premium quality
that is the hallmark of Dutch yards is of
course non-negotiable.
Another way in which Holland has recently
met a clear market need is the introduction
of the Dutch Commercial Cruising Vessel
(CCV). Both motor and sailing yachts are
already being built to CCV rules - the first
practical results of years of careful
preparation. The development of the CCV
rules has also stimulated discussions on the
possibility of creating one global standard for
commercially used superyachts. The fastest
way to achieve this will be if the national flag
states come to the table together and discuss
accepting each others standards. A single,
internationally agreed code would be of great
benefit to the global yachtbuilding industry
and all our clients!
