“ The options are virtually endless Amels Amels already has a solid track record in the top end of the semi-custom sector, having delivered six 50/52- metre Terence Disdale designed yachts between 1997 and 2004, known as the ‘Tigre D’Or Series’. It recently launched a new entry into the market called Limited Editions. “We frequently hear from clients that time is more precious to them than ever,” explains Victor Caminada, Head of Marketing. “These owners generally express a willingness to accept certain pre-set features in their new yacht in order to shorten the design and construction time. Nonetheless, they expect its production quality, safety features and classification standards to equal those of a fully custom-built Amels yacht.” Limited Editions is Amels’ response to this growing need - a series of new models based on standardised platforms of naval architecture, visual form and engineering, but offering each client sufficient leeway to personalise the yacht. The first Limited Editions yacht, the 52-metre Amels 171 1 , has exterior shaping by Tim Heywood and an interior styled by Laura Sessa. “Owners can comfortably enter a project even after construction has begun,” Caminada continues. “They are relieved of the long search for a sympathetic designer, and are free to devote more time to creating [ 6 ] Y a c h t V a l l e y ” their dream home afloat, while saving about one year in delivery time.” Amels’ designers have given the 171 a large interior for her waterline length, resulting in a gross tonnage of 628. For safety-conscious clients, this means that the safety characteristics far exceed SOLAS (MCA) and class requirements for yachts under 500 gross tons. Her higher degree of fire integrity and greater damage stability, for example, plus her requirement for more qualified crew, enhance her safety and resale value. Amels is also developing the 64.60-metre Limited Editions 212, also by Tim Heywood. 2 1 Feadship Construction got underway in 2005 on the first of a new semi-custom range of yachts from Feadship, and the first F45 Vantage 2 will be launched in mid- 2007. The aim is to serve clients who may previously have been put off by the cost considerations associated with a one-off custom build. “In recent years, owners wishing to commission a Feadship in the 45-metre range have asked us to find ways of reducing overall costs,” explains Feadship Chairman Hein Velema. “The F45 Vantage allows us to compete in a new market with the same levels of quality that we bring to the fully customised luxury motoryacht sector.”
The F45 Vantage took over two years to develop. Feadship’s design office De Voogt Naval Architects worked in close consultation with various experts from the chartering market, an increasingly important aspect for today’s owners. The result is a design in a very popular range at just under 500 gross tonnage. Feadship is offering four highly distinctive interior styles, with individual woods, marbles and fabrics providing an entirely different feel. Combined with personalised interior items and furniture, the options to create an interior that reflects personal preferences are virtually endless. 3 The concept and layout of the design also reflects how modern superyachts are used. “Many yachts in this length are over formal,” Velema says. “In everyday life, the owner and guests or charter parties tend to spend most of their time living outdoors. As casual relaxation has replaced formal dining, closed-in lounges and dining rooms are rarely used. The design of the F45 is very flexible, allowing the different spaces to be used in ways that more closely reflect the onboard cruising experience of today’s owners.” Holland Jachtbouw Holland Jachtbouw has been offering its clients a superb semi-customised option for sailing yachts since 1997, in addition to building many fully customised boats. The Truly Classic range was developed in partnership with Hoek Design Naval Architects, and five examples have already been launched: Belphegor (56ft), Corian (56 ft), Duva (65 ft), Windrose 3 (65 ft, not to be confused with the fully customised Windrose of Amsterdam) and Palmyre (80ft). “As proven designs that have been previously built, Truly Classics offer significant savings in time and money,” explains Taco van Ineveld from Holland Jachtbouw. “Owners have a choice of several lengths within the defined hull and deck lines, and can also opt for building in aluminium or composite. The interior layout and style, sail plan, keel, draught, deck gear, rig, technical systems and performance level is all fully customised to personal preferences. We even built a custom tender for Palmyre.” Following the rave reviews for its first semi-displacement motoryacht, the 105ft custom-built, flybridge cruiser Cassiopeia, Holland Jachtbouw has also announced a pair of brand-new semi-production options. Both have been created in partnership with two leading lights in Dutch naval architecture: A fast 131ft semi-displacement model from the drawing board of Cor De Rover, and an elegant 118ft displacement yacht designed by Pieter Beeldsnijder. These new semi- custom designs allow construction to get underway quickly while customers discuss a wide range of tailored options, including interior layout and onboard ambience.
