Final Edition
It's one of the shrillest moments of dialogue in any film you'll ever see. A wasted and drunken Neely O'Hara (Patty Duke) has reached
the pits of her career, the entertainment world has thrown her out with the trash, and the haggard looking twentysomething screams
to the high heavens as if to remind the world -- and herself -- that she once was somebody.
In "Valley of the Dolls," the scene is just one of the many overacted moments that chronicle the downfall of three young women who
turn to pills ("dolls") and booze to make it in show business. Though it was panned universally by critics and spawned an equally
detested sequel, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," three years later, the film has enthralled audiences for 40 years.
Based on the trashy novels by Jacqueline Susann, the campy cult classics caused an uproar of scandal and outrage, amid some of the
worst reviews ever garnered by two films. "Dolls" will be released on Tuesday along with its equally provocative sequel "Beyond the
Valley of the Dolls" in special edition DVDs by Fox Home Entertainment.
"Valley of the Dolls" (1967) starred Duke, Barbara Parkins and Sharon Tate as three aspiring actresses/singers who move to New York
and become embroiled in the show biz world of sex, drugs and booze. The bonus features include the screen test by Judy Garland,
who was replaced (by Susan Hayward) just weeks after filming began when she suffered a breakdown on the set.
"Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" (1970), with its screenplay by a young film critic named Roger Ebert, earned a studio-dreaded X
rating for its explicit sex scenes. The film told the story of the all-girl band the Carrie Nations, who go to Hollywood in search of fame,
Parkins, who starred in "Valley of the Dolls" as Anne Welles, the small-town girl with the model good looks, talked about the film that
became a classic in spite of itself.
Q. How did you get the role of Anne?
A. I was at Fox doing "Peyton Place" and we got word on the lot that "Valley of the Dolls" was being cast. Well, I wanted Neely; every
actress on the lot wanted Neely, the big dramatic character. I just went up to [Fox studio chief] Dick Zanuck, and two days later I did
get a screen test and got the role of good girl Anne Welles. But it turned out to be quite wonderful.
Q. Did you, Patty and Sharon become pals during the film?
A. Not so much with Patty. But Sharon and I became very close friends. I was maid of honor at her wedding [to director Roman
Polanski]. I would visit them often in London.
Q. How did her horrific murder affect you?
A. To this day, it's still hard to comprehend, especially because she was due to give birth any day. I can't imagine how Roman deals
with those memories. She was just beautiful, far ahead of her time. She was gentle, sweet and funny.
Q. What was Judy Garland like?
A. We had worked together for two days on set, then she locked herself in her dressing room and refused to come out for hours. They
finally fired her. She walked off the set and took a [costume] gown with her. She was an emotional roller coaster who would argue
with the director if she didn't like how she was photographed. When she was happy, she'd hug you before a take and say, "We're
gonna have a great scene!" We all knew we were in the presence of a really phenomenal actress.
Q. How did you feel about playing out your first big-screen romance opposite actor Paul Burke?
A. I just thought he was so old. How could my character be in love with him? I had dated Cat Stevens a little bit at that time, so I
put a picture of Cat on my [trailer] door, so when I would go out to do my scenes with Paul, I would just think of Cat instead.
