Cynthia Lopuszynski
Jumps into New Position
Cynthia Lopuszynski stands before
the makeshift hopscotch board, throws
down her “stone” and begins to hop,
skip and jump her way “home.” A
crowd of “actors” cheer and the
audience, consisting of Crystal Lake
Public Library (CLPL) staff, breaks into
roars of laughter.
The new Head of Adult Services
jumped into her role as “number two”
hopscotch player during a recent skit
to educate the CLPL staff about the
Get in the Game, Read! Summer
Reading Program. In an odd twist
of events, Cynthia was also recently
called upon to jump into her role as
acting Head of Adult Services two
months earlier than expected when
her predecessor, Jan Polep, broke
her foot eight weeks short of her
scheduled June 13 retirement.
Cynthia is used to jumping into new
situations. She was born and raised in
Ohio, where she earned her degree
from Ohio University and met her
husband, Frank. They moved to
Kentucky, where she received her
Master’s in Library Science from
the University of Kentucky. Prior to
Frank’s recent retirement from his
position at Sears, Roebuck, and Co.,
they were transferred frequently with
his job. As a result, Cynthia derived
THE BEACON
C r y s t a l L a k e P u b l i c L i b r a r y J u l y / A u g u s t 2 0 0 8
a breadth of experience and great
adaptability to change from her
positions at eight different libraries in
five different states!
An advocate for service excellence,
Cynthia enjoys jumping in and
helping patrons get the answers
they need. “I love helping people
solve their problems and improve
their lives. I like to see the public get
answers from trained professionals
instead of on the web from sources
that may or may not be accurate.”
Cynthia also enjoys the fun and outof-the-ordinary
reference questions
like “What color are a mouse’s
eyes?” that a Library staff member
answered. “Sometimes you wonder
if you’re settling a bar bet,” she says,
clearly amused by the challenge.
Cynthia looks forward to jumping
into her new position. She has
the wholehearted endorsement of
the former Head of Adult Services,
Jan Polep. “I know Cynthia will
enthusiastically focus on providing
great customer service, expand our
popular adult collection, and be an
advocate for expanding our online
resources that are available at home
and at work,” says Jan. For her part,
Cynthia is focused on continuing
the tradition of innovation that her
predecessor began. She has high
regard for the entire CLPL staff
who she says makes her job easy,
recognizing that any strides she
makes are a group effort. She is
also committed to providing excellent
patron service at the CLPL.
“Libraries are great places,”
Cynthia says, smiling broadly, “their
only agenda is to make people’s
lives better.”
Thanks to a $11,773 grant from the
Illinois Clean Energy Community
Foundation, the Crystal Lake Public
Library has received a lighting upgrade.
The upgrade has improved the overall
quality of light in the Library, uses less
energy, and saves money. These cost
reductions will allow the Library to direct
more of its resources to purchasing
Library materials and providing other
necessary services. It is estimated
that the Library will recover the $29,511
spent on this project in four years.

The Best Bargain in Town
“The Crystal Lake Library is the best
bargain in town!” says Fran Hicks,
pictured above at right, with CLPL
Head of Youth Services, Jessie Exum.
“I don’t mind paying for Library service
at all. I can go online and find books,
put them on reserve and they’re always
there waiting for me. I’m consistently
met with a smile, a welcoming attitude
at the CLPL.”
We are often asked why families in
unincorporated Crystal Lake have to
pay “more” for Library service than
those who live in the city. The fact is
that everyone is charged exactly the
same amount. The difference is that
those who live in the city are charged
in their tax bill and those who live in
unincorporated areas pay directly.
In either case, given the rising cost of
gas, the CLPL is your one-stop shopping
place for books, magazines, CDs,
DVDs, and myriad other resources
for your “staycation.” Make sure to
visit the CLPL this summer - the best
bargain in town!
