In accordance with JAA/EASA requirements, TRI/SFI (Type Rating Instructor/Synthetic Flight Instructor)/CRI
(Class Rating Instructor) courses must include a generic instructors’ foundation skills course (TRI/SFI/CRI Core
course) followed after a suitable length of time by the aircraft TRI Type Specific (TRITS) module. The TRES
course completes a unique portfolio that demonstrates CTC’s unrivalled experience in the provision of airline
instructor/examiner training.
(JAA/EASA approved for TRI/SFI/CRI candidates)
The course covers all aspects of training skills as required by the Regulatory Authority. It extends beyond the
basic syllabus to cover those advanced topics that any airline training department would expect future
training staff to experience – including CRM debriefing techniques, the analysis of crew behaviours (utilising
the Non Technical Skills (NOTECHS) framework or the client airline’s own approved behavioural markers
framework**), report writing and debriefing ”difficult” trainees. The course covers the following main topic
areas –
• Human Performance and Limitations
• The Learning Process and the Teaching Process
• Training Philosophies
• Techniques of Applied Ground Instruction
• Student Evaluation and Testing
• Practical Briefing, Training, Assessment and Debriefing Exercises
* CRMI (Line) accreditation can be included subject to prior approval by your Flight Operations Inspector.
Normally one course a month – maximum 8 candidates
TRI Type Specific Course (TRITS) – 8 working days
(TRI or SFI)
Instructor / Examiner Training Page 2
Following successful completion of the TRI Core course modules, and ideally after having observed several sim
details with a Company TRI/TRE (recommended but not mandatory), CTC provides candidates with approved
training for the type specific element of the TRI/SFI course on B737, B757, B767, A318/9/20/21 and BAe146
aircraft (other types are offered subject to Regulatory Approval).
The course is conducted using a mix of classroom and type specific full flight simulator (FFS) resources and
takes the candidate through the essential practical exercises of instruction required to qualify for type rating
training privileges. It is a demanding and testing exposure for the future TRI/SFI).
The type specfic course consists of 2 days groundschool and 6 FFS details, the last of which is an instructor’s
proficiency test in accordance with JAA/EASA requirements.
Abridged TRI/SFI Courses - For those instructors who already hold a TRI/SFI on another ”similar type” of
aircraft, CTC also holds Approval to conduct abridged TRI/SFI courses consisting of 1 day of groundschool
and 5 simulator details.
TRI Sim to Aircraft Upgrade – For those seeking an upgrade from TRI Simulator to TRI Aircraft training
qualification, a course comprising 1 day of groundschool, 2 hours of FFS and approximately 1 hour of aircraft
training can be provided in association with the client airline.
About CTC Aviation Group plc
Instructor / Examiner Training Page 3
CTC is one of the very few organisations to have been approved by the British Civil Aviation Authority to
conduct Type Rating Examiner courses on its behalf. This course has achieved a world-renowned status in
preparing airline instructors for examining duties on behalf of the Regulatory Authority. Candidates entering
this course must satisfy all the training and experience requirements of the appropriate Regulatory Authority
including possession of a valid TRI rating.
This course is generic to all aircraft types and focuses on the practical and ethical differences between
instructing and examining. It involves practical exercises and scenarios in a simulated environment to enable
the TRE candidate to apply general principles of planning the test scenarios and examining in either a
simulator or an aircraft. A formal test on the final day assesses that the correct proficiency standard has been
achieved to progress the candidate through to the later Examiner Authorisation Acceptance Test (EAAT) that
may be required by your Regulator.
** The NOTECHS (Non Technical Skills) framework is used for all courses as the foundation for the
development of observational skills in identifying effective and ineffective behaviours by crew members. If
your airline uses a different, Approved behavioural markers framework, it may be possible to incorporate its
use depending on the numbers involved in the course. Please contact us for more information.
