DANIEL JONES
Ironically, one of Daniel Jones’ best days as a Point Loma student was his
last one. The commencement speaker was the then-president of the American
Red Cross. “I took [his speech] to heart,” says Jones. “It gave me the kick I
needed and was really a key to helping me imagine my future.”
Raised in Australia by Nazarene missionaries, Daniel always knew he
wanted to participate in some type of mission service. His fascination with
aircraft, taste for adventure, and love of Christ landed him in the cockpit. After
graduating with a B.A. in psychology in 1985, he spent nine more years
preparing for a career in mission aviation.
In 1995, Jones became coordinator of Nazarene Mission Aviation (NMA) for
the Africa region. He grew the program from a small one-base/one-pilot
operation to a ministry that served 23 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, an area
more than twice the size of the continental United States. Jones and his fellow pilots transported personnel and supplies, such
as food, medicine, building and educational materials, and JESUS film evangelism teams.
In 2000, floods ravaged Mozambique. For four months, NMA pilots flew daily relief trips from sunup to sundown – a
mission Jones calls “just a great use of airplanes!” By contrast, he and his family felt helpless in the face of the overwhelming
AIDS pandemic that surrounded them. “Death touched our lives every single day.”
In August 2005, the Mission Aviation program closed down. Daniel has since formed his own businesses: Leading Edge
Exports, an aviation partnership, and Leading Edge Productions, a video production and marketing company. But his heart is
still in missions and in the sky. As part of his volunteer role with Mercy-Air, in January 2005, he traveled to Singapore and
Indonesia to assist in relief efforts after the tsunami hit the region. “My goal is to work into a position where I can volunteer as
much time as possible to missions.”
Daniel Jones and his wife Annette – also a PLNU graduate – have three children: Malachi (17), Noah (15), and Hannah (13).
BOBBI SEELIG
Never underestimate the influence of a teacher… just ask Bobbi Seelig. At the age of seven,
she accepted Jesus Christ because of a Sunday School teacher’s example. “I realized that if my
teacher loved me so much, how much more God must love me!” says Seelig. She has lived out
that point by taking that same love and her professional expertise into California classrooms.
Bobbi graduated from Point Loma College in 1975 with a child development degree and
received her master’s in elementary education from Cal State Northridge in 1979. In 1988, Seelig
began teaching third grade and has never looked back. “The sky is the limit with third graders,”
she says with awe and appreciation. “They really enjoy the learning process, and that makes
teaching a complete joy.”
Seelig currently teaches at Magnolia School in Carlsbad, California where she was awarded
Teacher of the Year in 1989. She received the same honor in 1995 and 1996 at Butte Vista School in Yuba City. For six years,
she was the district facilitator for professional growth training sessions involving 40 third grade teachers across the school
district, one of whom was her own daughter! Bobbi was recently honored as Carlsbad’s District Teacher of the Year for 2005.
Bobbi has served in many other capacities at the district level, including 14 years on a math curriculum committee and five
years on a writing assessment team. She has taught children with special needs, children in the Gifted and Talented
Education (GATE) program, and everyone in between. “Teaching is an art form for her,” says a good friend. “She’s turned
down prestigious administrative positions to remain in the classroom for the children.”
Seelig’s calling extends to her colleagues and her church. She leads a weekly “Teachers in Prayer” group for Magnolia
teachers, has co-led 67 marriage enrichment retreats worldwide with her husband, and has directed over 25 children’s
musicals. Recently, she developed the EMBRACE ministry, which has ministered to over 100 new families visiting her church
in the last year.
She has been married to husband Steve, also a PLNU graduate, for 32 years. They have two daughters, Stephanie and
Stacie, both of whom are PLNU alumnae.
DAN WHITNEY
In the fall of 1984, Dan Whitney came to PLNU with a hundred dollars and a dream of
playing professional baseball. After just a few weeks in an economics class, he was ready to
go home. Fortunately, a few people took him under their wings, such as Dana Walling and
business professor Dorothy Dykman. When Whitney committed his life to Christ during a
chapel service, Coach Carroll Land had his hand on Dan’s shoulder.
These same people remained faithful when more hard times hit.
In Dan’s sophomore year, his arm snapped while he was pitching in a championship game. It required months of
rehabilitation and a shift in his personal goals. He focused on academics, leadership – he served as Associated Student Body
president – and his relationships.
Graduating in 1989 with a business administration degree, Whitney went straight from campus into the corporate world,
working for several high-tech Fortune 500 companies. He became known as a high-profile “change agent” in Silicon Valley and
was an executive at Advanced Micro Devices by age 30. By age 34, Dan was a senior director at Seagate Technology.
Dan was at the “top of his game,” but a dramatic mountain biking accident in December 2000 left him face down, completely
paralyzed, on the side of a mountain. Doctors’ odds were slim that he would ever move again below the neck, and they gave him
a one percent chance of ever walking again. As God would have it, thousands of people were deeply affected by Dan’s
experience. His journey of healing and faith transformed him into a “change agent” for the cause of Christ.
In addition to telling his story around the world, Dan established Whitney Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization raising
funds for Camp Attitude, a multi-location summer camp experience for children with physical challenges. Dan also serves on
Camp Attitude’s board of directors. You can learn more about the camps by going to www.whitneyhope.com.
Dan confesses that the accident has led him places he never thought he’d go and has given him opportunities to share Christ’s
love with others, even in a business environment. “Seeing me come into their offices with my crutch almost automatically leads
to discussion about their own struggles, which provides me the opportunity to share my faith,” says Whitney.
He currently has his own consulting company and is an authorized reseller for Vinimaya, a software corporation that
specializes in business-to-business technology. Ask him about business and he jokingly tells you his most important and
toughest job is coaching his daughters’ softball teams, a job he wouldn’t trade for anything! Dan Whitney and his wife, Candace
(Claassen), also a PLNU graduate, live in Scotts Valley, California with their two daughters, Nicole (11) and Danielle (8).
CHARLES HARDISON
As a nine-year-old boy, Charles Hardison was already concerned about people with
needs both within his culture and other cultures. As he grew and progressed through
school, this interest developed into a strong call to give his life in service to others.
Hardison graduated from Point Loma College in 1983 with a degree in biology
before attending graduate and medical school at Loma Linda University. Living and
working in a cross-cultural setting, he took weekend trips to clinics in Mexico, as well
as longer trips to Africa, Honduras and American Indian reservations.
He completed his residency at Natividad Medical Center, a county hospital in
Salinas, California, becoming a board certified family physician. Charles took a
position nearby at Clinica de Salud, a health clinic serving migrant farm workers, but
he eventually returned to Natividad to train interns.
“Charley’s heart for people always shines through his work as a medical doctor,” says a friend and pastor. “He’s a man of
compassion in action.”
While in Salinas, Hardison mobilized church and community groups to form a volunteer health education program. As part
of the Oasis Church of the Nazarene, he served as a board member and a home-group leader. He also helped develop the
church’s emergency food pantry and a policy for the emergency assistance fund.
Since 1998, Charles has worked as a medical volunteer with the Scientific Technology & Language Institute in central Asia.
He educates and trains teachers of family medicine in a post-Soviet environment.
In summer 2005, Charles was stateside to raise funds and attend a conference, but due to the forces of nature, he was called
into service again. Just days after Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, Hardison was enlisted by the Heart to Heart
relief organization to travel with a medical team into the devastated area. The initial purpose of their visit was a short-term
needs assessment, but it became a month-long effort to provide mobile medical care and to set up clinics. He remained in the
area to help after Hurricane Rita struck.
Charles Hardison seems to constantly be in the right place at the right time to reach out with medical care and compassion
and to respond to the call upon his life.
Charles and his wife, Phyllis, have two daughters, Elaina (14) and Danae (12). ■
Homecoming Weekend saw hundreds of alumni and
university friends return to campus to visit with each
other and participate in the 55 events that took place.
Thursday evening, the Fall Musicale showcased student
music ensembles in concert. The drama department
presented Moliere’s “The Miser” to two enthusiastic
audiences on Saturday.
The Homecoming theme, “Changing the World
Together,” was personified in the six alumni who were
honored. During Homecoming Chapel, the Alumnus of
Point Loma Award was presented to Dr. Charles Hardison,
Bobbi Seelig, Dan Whitney, and Daniel Jones. Saturday
evening, Jacque Frey and Dr. Ron Benefiel were honored
with the Distinguished Achievement Award during The
Main Event.
Friday night, the Variety Show and Coronation
entertained over 1,500 students and alumni. Chris Ritter
and Karrie Loock were crowned Homecoming king and
queen. Melissa Tucker and Brian Becker teamed up to
emcee the Coronation. Variety Show acts ran the spectrum
from jazz solos to jugglers throwing knives to a
ventriloquist and his dummy (who was actually quite
smart). Eric Groves and Chip Killingsworth, as Variety
Show emcees, kept the humor rolling all evening.
Eleven class reunions were hosted, from the Class of
1950 to the Class of 2000. Alumni shared stories, news
and laughter.
Sports were high on the list of activities, starting with
the Homecoming Golf Tournament on Friday morning. On
Saturday, alumni and students battled it out in tennis,
baseball, soccer and softball. In two exciting games, the
women’s basketball team triumphed over Melbourne Roos
from Australia (72 – 52) and the men’s basketball team
was victorious over the highly ranked Carroll College from
Montana (69 – 51).
Chalmer Cartwright and Ben Foster were honored
during the Cartwright/Foster Scholarship Dinner. These two
alumni served the institution as coach and professor for 20
years and 35 years respectively. Many of their former
players were on hand for this event. The Cartwright/Foster
Endowed Scholarship will help students for many years to
come.
All in all, it was an exciting weekend. A time of
reflection, worship and sharing – then traveling back
home to once again try to change our corner of the world
in meaningful ways. ■
