Early <strong>Permian</strong> to topmost Triassic. Palae<strong>on</strong>tological data are very<br />

important in palaeomagnetism for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correlati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong>s with a<br />

stratigraphic scale, and for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> identificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> magnetic z<strong>on</strong>es.<br />

Palaeomagnetic correlati<strong>on</strong> is mainly based <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong>’s<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinuity, rock c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, ancient comp<strong>on</strong>ent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural remnant<br />

magnetizati<strong>on</strong>, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> available data <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> magnetostratigraphic<br />

intervals. Single samples can be used for identifying not <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

magnetic z<strong>on</strong>es but also subz<strong>on</strong>es like events and inversi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

However, polarity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a magnetic z<strong>on</strong>e can be c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be<br />

determined <strong>on</strong>ly when c<strong>on</strong>firmed by an adequate number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> close<br />

vectors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural remnant magnetizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Discovery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Middle <strong>Permian</strong> Brachiopod Fauna<br />

from Peninsular Malaysia and its<br />

A Middle <strong>Permian</strong> (Guadalupian) brachiopod fauna is described<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘Leptodus shales’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gua Musang Formati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Central<br />

belt <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Peninsular Malaysia. The ‘Leptodus shale’ brachiopod<br />

fauna is dominated by lytt<strong>on</strong>ids and productids, with characteristic<br />

genera including Vediproductus, Uncinunellina, Leptodus,<br />

Transennatia, Neoch<strong>on</strong>etes, Meekella, and Derbyia. Overall, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fauna shows str<strong>on</strong>g Palaeoequatorial (Cathaysian) affinities and<br />

can be correlated with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Middle <strong>Permian</strong> brachiopod faunas<br />

from Indochina, such as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cambodian Sisoph<strong>on</strong> faunas and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Lengwu fauna from Zhejiang Province, South China block.<br />

This fauna is important for two reas<strong>on</strong>s. Firstly, brachiopod<br />

faunas from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘Leptodus shales’ are currently thought to be<br />

Changhsingian in age, while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> discovery here <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> genera such as<br />

Vediproductus indicates that an older Guadalupian age is more<br />

likely for this fauna.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>dly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Guadalupian fauna with str<strong>on</strong>g<br />

Palaeoequatorial affinities in this area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Peninsular Malaysia is<br />

important for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tect<strong>on</strong>ic history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ast<br />

Asian regi<strong>on</strong>, as it adds evidence to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ory that east and west<br />

Peninsular Malaysia were separated during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Early and Middle<br />

<strong>Permian</strong>. It indicates that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eastern and central parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Peninsular<br />

Malaysia were within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Palaeoequatorial Realm in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Middle<br />

<strong>Permian</strong>, while faunas form <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> western part are characteristic <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sibumasu province and were allied with cool water G<strong>on</strong>dwanan<br />

faunas.<br />

The discovery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this Guadalupian brachiopod fauna form <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Central Belt <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Peninsular Malaysia is important in understanding<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> somewhat c<strong>on</strong>troversial tect<strong>on</strong>ic and palaeobiogeographical<br />

history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ast Asian regi<strong>on</strong> at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> close <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Palaeozoic.<br />

The sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Ural Mountains and eastern margin <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian<br />

Platform c<strong>on</strong>tain <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> type area for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cisuralian, which includes<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Asselian, Sakmarian, Artinskian and Kungurian stages. The<br />

Orenburgian (uppermost Carb<strong>on</strong>iferous) also occurs <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. These<br />

stages were defined initially and widely recognized based <strong>on</strong> amm<strong>on</strong>oid<br />

phylogenies. However in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past four decades, stage<br />

and substage (horiz<strong>on</strong>s) definiti<strong>on</strong>s were established and practically<br />

used <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fusulinids – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most abundant and <strong>on</strong>e<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best studied upper Paleozoic fossil groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

Urals and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r regi<strong>on</strong>s. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last decade, c<strong>on</strong>od<strong>on</strong>ts have become<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> primary basis for refining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se definiti<strong>on</strong>s because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir utility in global correlati<strong>on</strong>. The GSSP for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Permian</strong> and basal Cisuralian Asselian stage was ratified in 1996<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> IUGS and occurs at Aidaralash Creek, Akt‘be regi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

Kazakhstan. It is defined by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first occurrence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>od<strong>on</strong>t<br />

Streptognathodus isolatus in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> S. wabaunsensis chr<strong>on</strong>ocline.<br />

This level closely approximates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong>al boundary definiti<strong>on</strong><br />

based <strong>on</strong> cephalopods and fusulinacean foraminifers. It is<br />

expected that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GSSP definiti<strong>on</strong>s for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cisuralian will<br />

similarly be defined within c<strong>on</strong>od<strong>on</strong>t chr<strong>on</strong>oclines in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

Urals. These definiti<strong>on</strong>s will be selected as close as possible to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong>al bases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stages and be c<strong>on</strong>sistent with<br />

fusulinacean and amm<strong>on</strong>oid phylogenetic changes. Several suggesti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible GSSP for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cisuralian stages<br />

will be discussed.<br />
