OBJECTIVES:
This symposium is designed to provide a forum to all kinds <strong>of</strong>
scientists who are interested in <strong>the</strong> Permian-Triassic boundary
and its related great events for examining <strong>the</strong> key section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
Permian and Triassic boundary at Meishan, Zhejiang Province
and discussing <strong>the</strong> great transition between <strong>the</strong> Paleozoic and
Mesozoic and its associated events.
The field excursions provide you opportunity to visit some
typical sequences from <strong>the</strong> Carboniferous to Lower Triassic and/
or some paralic and continental Permian-Triassic boundary sections
in South China.

THEMES:
The symposium will be structured into four main <strong>the</strong>mes:
The global stratotype <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Permian-Triassic boundary and
its geological setting;
Stratigraphy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Permian and Triassic boundary and its
global correlation over various facies;
Tectonics, paleogeography, paleoclimatology and paleoecology
during <strong>the</strong> Paleozoic and Mesozoic transition;
Biotic crisis, mass extinction and recovery, and connected
events across <strong>the</strong> Permian and Triassic boundary.
FIELD EXCURSIONS:
Pre-Symposium Field Excursion: Guangde, Anhui Province and
Changxing, Zhejiang Province (8-9 August 2001)
This two-day field excursion will provide you an overview <strong>of</strong>
<strong>the</strong> geological setting in Meishan area, Changxing County. You
will visit some typical sections from <strong>the</strong> Devonian to Triassic,
which well recorded <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eastern Tethys during <strong>the</strong>
Pangea from late Paleozoic to Triassic. The differentiation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
Changhsingian facies and some key boundaries will be observed
as well.
