7. Canadian National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination
All applicants for registration in Alberta must successfully complete the National Dental
Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) examination. A notarized copy of your NDHCB
certificate must be included with your application for registration.
The examination tests the knowledge, skills, attitude and judgment needed for entry-level
practice. The four (4) hour test is in electronic form, consists of two hundred (200)
multiple-choice questions. The examination uses a statistical method to calculate the
passing score. Over the past several years, the passing score has been between 65%
and 70%. The examination is offered three times a year.
If you have graduated from a program outside of Canada you will need to demonstrate
that your program is of the same standard as programs offered in Canada. Complete
information related to the NDHCB examination is available on the NDHCB website at
www.ndhcb.ca
You must have a report completed that evaluates your educational credentials. This
report can be prepared and submitted directly by one of the following international
credential assessment services approved by the NDHCB:
! International Qualifications Assessment Service
! International Credential Evaluation Service
! World Education Services
Graduates of accredited and non-accredited dental hygiene programs may apply to write
the examination. The only dental hygiene programs the Canadian National Dental
Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) recognizes as accredited are programs that are
accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) or the
American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (ADA/CODA). All
other graduates are considered to be non-accredited graduates. For a list of accredited
programs, see the CDAC link at the end of this document.
If you were trained in a non-accredited dental hygiene program, you must meet the
following educational requirements:
! The dental hygiene program must be from an established separate school,
faculty, division or department that is recognized by the appropriate
government agency in the country.
! The program must be a minimum of two (2) full-time academic years, sixteen
(16) months in length, including a clinical component supervised by a dental
hygiene faculty. On graduation the program must deliver a dental hygiene
diploma, certificate or degree.
! You must prove that your educational institution meets the Canadian Dental
Hygiene Program standard. To do this, submit a report from an external
credentialing agency that has been approved by the NDHCB.
Graduates of non-accredited programs who meet these educational requirements must
also provide the following documentation:
! Eligibility Application Form and fees.
