attendance in the US declined 8.7% (just
over 291,000 people). By comparison,
The Texas Annual Conference averages
about 105,000 in worship attendance. A
loss that size is the equivalent to the closing
of all 685 churches in the TAC as well
as those in North, Central, Rio Grande
and Southwest – every UMC church in
the state of Texas and close to 50% of the
churches in New Mexico.
To change this trend, Bishop Huie
pledged to devote 100% of her energy in
the TAC. “My priorities are your priori-

to adopt the recommendation of the
Strategic Assessment Team: to establish
three primary areas of focus as a conference
geared to “imagine a new church.”
Introducing him to the audience, Bishop
Janice Huie told delegates, “Dr. Jones
has become my friend, mentor and
ministry colleague while helping the
Core Leadership Team design an overall
direction to move us forward as a conference.”
Jones addressed the general sense
of “being stuck in the church wilderness.”
Adds Jones, “Those that investigated
the Promise Land were the same

and conducting surveys, TAC leadership is

Communications’ third overall charge is to

not just to talk to each other but to facilitate the

Concludes Arnold, “Conference consultant

Better Stewards of Apportionment Dollars
For many organizations, churches and conferences, the printed newsletter has given way to an electronic one to —save money, save trees,
save time, get news into the hands of readers earlier, and to utilize color more effectively and affordably.
As Paula Arnold, director of communications for the Texas Annual Conference explains, “The reasons for these changes are two-fold: One, by
integrating information in one primary place, The Texas Annual Conference is streamlining communication with our busy readers in mind. We
want to simplify things for our audience by consolidating information and we want to do that with sensitivity to the all-electronic mobile generation
as well as those that prefer printed news. And secondly, the conference is working to demonstrate better stewardship with apportionment
dollars. This change will provide thousands in cost savings that can be better spent on reaching a larger audience both inside and outside the
conference.”

“I was awed by the International Assembly”
During annual conference, Scott Atnip,
of Wesley Huntsville UMC reported to the
time delegate to the General Conference. “I
expected the 2012 General Conference in
Tampa would be a historic event with great
reforms being adopted to bring United Methodist
into a new day with new power to make
disciples of Christ to transform the world,” he
shared. “However, I was most awed by the
international assembly with eight languages
being spoken, UMC delegates representing 34
and 3 concordat churches.”
He praised the Pan Methodist agreement
bringing together the African Methodist
Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion,
African Union Methodist Protestant,
Christian Methodist Episcopal and the Union
American Methodist Episcopal churches.
He was deeply moved by the Act of Repentance
Service “in the plenary hall, where
they confessed that the church has participated
in the violation, the exploitation, and even
the killing of indigenous people.”
He adds, “We have been gifted with a
great church that makes disciples of Jesus
Christ and transforms every corner of the
world on a daily basis, but with many of these
opportunities we failed that church. We can
do better.” Atnip shared his thoughts for improving
the process:

along with an award recognizing the TAC
as the #1 contributor to The Advance with
a $1.4 million donation. The Advance is
the giving mechanisms that allows ministry
to happen in over 80 countries around
the world. In addition to being the leader
in the South Central Jurisdiction, the
Texas Annual Conference was #9 in the

since she stepped into the role in
2005, she recounted unexpected
blessings of serving: “Spiritually,
I feel I have grown and matured
as a Christian. Surprisingly, I’ve
found a voice deep inside me that
I didn’t know was there.” Taylor
added that “the movement to
do God’s work will only spread
when we walk it, talk it and live
it... When we become outwardly
focused and answer the call to

this,” Taylor concluded, “You’re
the light of the world. Let your
light shine before men that they
may see your good deeds and
praise your God in Heaven.”

SCJ bishops, Bishop Huie expects a follow up

group of clergy and laity who “see a new church
and want to help our congregations and conferences
move forward. More than ever before TAC
is providing leadership to the larger church.”

both personal holiness and
social holiness. John Wesley
describes the Christian
heart, taking up the whole
capacity of the soul.” God
blesses us with the means to
holiness: prayer, reading and
studying scripture, fasting, community
worship, receiving the sacraments and doing
good. In Bishop Schnase’s book, Remember the
Future, he describes grace breaking into our lives.
What story comes to mind about God’s grace
breaking through in your life?
Our Mission: Methodists do no harm, do
good and stay in love with God. “I invite you to
use your imagination to bring the vital past into
the expectant present. Following the General
Conference in 1864, a delegation of Methodist
leaders met with President Abraham Lincoln
which resulted in a note of thanks that said:
The Methodist Church sends more soldiers to
prayers to Heaven than any. God bless the Methodist
Church.”
Practicing our faith: Methodists embody
an ecclesiology that might be best described with
three verbs: connect, cooperate, create. “Our
young clergy understand connection primarily as
relational, missional and theological. Only then
is it structural via boards, agencies or apportionments.

As innovators, Methodists create as part of our

Added Acevedo, “Remember, the target of John Wesley’s
ministry was the dregs of English society and that, too,
remains our goal. God has called us to reach out to those in
need, to addicts of every kind meaning we have to reach those
outside our church whom we may be uncomfortable with.”
In Session 3, he submitted another Turbocharged Tradition
by encouraging churches to reach the poor, the marginalized
and people hungry for a transcendent experience with
God. “They have a father who is crazy about them – they just
don’t know it yet,” he said. “It is our tradition,” he added,
old foundry in London in 1738. The building was their center
to feed the poor, worship and to start a school.” In conclusion
he challenges the members of the Texas Annual Conference:
“Each of us must BE the mission and we must build healthy
teams to make disciples of Christ to transform the world.”

strategies will foster alignment across the conference
and facilitate the making of disciples.
“Fruitful churches are not concerned with hierarchies
of structure but are willingly engaging,
innovating, adapting to become diverse congregations
that are willing to do whatever it takes.”
Priority 2: Nurturing lay and clergy leadership
is imperative as well, as modeled by
the corporate world. “When a prominent CEO
shared with me that he spent 60% of his time recruiting
and developing talent it occurred to me
that the church should spend 100% of its time in
this lifechanging activity, because when you unleash
people to minister within their vocations,
that’s how evangelism happens!” Jones noted
that the areas of focus are not ‘either – or” but
all. “We purposely made the third priority ambiguous
and expansive to include preschoolers
through young adults because the young people
will bring imagination and life to our denomination
and the world.” In summation, added Jones,
“Everyone across the conference should be able
to answer the question at a moment’s notice:

Methodist youth “collide” in ministry
NEW LEADERS:

Hundreds of UMC students from Methodist churches across Texas met in
Galveston during annual conference to serve together in ministry, worship, and practice
their leadership skills as a part of the COLLIDE 2012 program. While several
groups helped the elderly with yard work or assisted at a local park, dozens of youth
assisted with weeding, mowing, harvesting and watering the plant-a-seed, feed-aneed
community garden at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in nearby League City.
“The work day was enormously successful as students helped harvest 200 lbs of
vegetables as well as cleaning out the shed,” says garden coordinator Ally Hardick.
The ‘donation garden,’ which began in 2008 on the campus of the Episcopal church,
poverty level in the Clear Lake, Tx area. Collide activities also facilitated leadership
training as well as an outdoor worship service on Palm Beach followed by good,
clean water play. This year marks the third annual Collide event hosted by the Texas
Annual Conference Youth/Young Adult ministries.

Dr. Stansell stated that,
while most of the property is
encumbered by loans -- if or
when the college is dissolved
-- the property would regress
to the Conference after all
encumbrances are paid. “To be
clear,” he explained, “TAC has
no legal responsibility prior to
dissolution.“ He also reminded
the conference that the TAC
guaranteed a $1,000,000 line of
credit to Lon Morris from the
Heartspring Foundation, and
that the entire $1,000,000 plus
interest was outstanding as od
October 2011.

College, thanked Bishop Janice
Riggle Huie and the entire
Annual Conference for efforts
underway to raise funds for Lon
Morris employees who were
not paid in the past couple of
months because of the college’s
cash crunch. “We are so grateful
for the emergency funds that
are being provided from TAC,”
she says. “First United Methodist
Church in Jacksonville and
the appeal that has gone out
to all TAC churches to raise
$250,000 to cover at least one
payroll period.”

has missed three payrolls
to employees, they are behind
in debt payments and they have
no cash on hand. “ She ex-
plained that the May furlough
of employees was a necessary
step to avoid further increasing
liabilities (since there is no
reasonable expectation of being
able to pay those liabilities) and
that labor laws do not allow
employees to work without
being paid. “Employees demonstrated
great dedication to
continue to work even though
they are owed back pay,” she
added. The summer school
session has been cancelled,
however, recruitment is ongoing
for the fall semester.

writing and student recruiting.

Brandley
speaks at
Galveston
breakfast
On Wednesday, June
6, Clarence Brandley,
locally exonerated death
row survivor shared, at the
“Witness to Innocence”
Breakfast in Galveston, his
harrowing experience of
being wrongfully convicted
yet spending nine years,
in prison. This event was
sponsored by the Conference
Board of Church and
Society. His unthinkable
story has been documented
in a book called White
Conspiracy and a movie
called White Lies.
Even in the wake of
new evidence, Brandley
was denied a new
trial for years -- until his
advocates proved that the
investigators had coerced
false statements from his
coworkers, and demonstrated
that blatant racism
existed in both of his allwhite
jury trials. “The jury
delivered a guilty verdict
in just 20 minutes even
though the evidence from
the crime scene included
blonde hair,” Brandley, an
African American, shared.
He also learned that the
judge and prosecutor met
every morning during the
proceedings, feeling the

pressure to deliver
a verdict before school
resumed. Brandley advised
attendees that it will require
a groundswell effort
to write and call legislators
about this issue and
encouraged them to spread
the word to affect change.
“We encourage individuals
to be actively
engaged in the struggle
to end the death penalty,
challenging the American
public to grapple with the
problem of a criminal justice
system that sends innocent
people to death row
more often than we realize,”
says Reverend Susan
Wiley of Memorial Drive
UMC, a Houston church
with an active social
justice ministry. “Clarence
has a compelling account
of how innocent people are
often executed - especially
those that do not have the
resources or opportunities

Wiley, “Our denomination
has a longstanding commitment
to abolishing the
death penalty,” adds Wiley,
“and the only way to ensure
that Clarence Brandley’s
experience is never
repeated is to eliminate
capital punishment.”

fabric sales this year. Renee
(Christ-Sugar Land Director
of Missions) went on the
November of 2008, which
sparked in her a special passion
for the people of that
country, as evidenced by her
mission trip pictures of Cote
d’Ivoire children on the display
table.
Also, helping with fabric
sales was Sari Frey from St.
Paul’s UMC, and the creator
of the beautiful quilt that was
offered at annual conference
as her gift to raise money
for the Adopt-a-Student-Program.
A member of Christ
UMC-Sugar Land donated
$1,200 so their church could
take this quilt home. This
donation allows two students
to attend school for a year.

and/or missions. Individuals
wishing to purchase the fabric
for personal use can do so
