Bruce Sterling
INTRODUCTION
Ten tweede ziet
zijn eerder into punk.
INTRODUCTION
Steampunk is populair geworden,
Morris wallpaper, Aubrey Beardsley Yellow Book decadence, romantisch-nationalistische architectuur
Ze zullen zeker verdwijnen, net als “Gone With the
We zijn een technologische maatschappij. Als we futselend spelen in onze heimelijke, Gothic, gravenleegrovende
gestorven is.
We slaapwandelen.
Steampunk is begrafenis-theater.
INTRODUCTION
The past is a kind of future that has already happened.
The User’s Guide to Steampunk
People like steampunk for two good reasons. First, it’s a great opportunity to dress up in a cool, weird way that baffles the straights.
Second, steampunk set design looks great. The Industrial Revolution has grown old. So machines that Romantics considered satanic
now look romantic.
If you like to play dress-up, good for you. You’re probably young, and, being young, you have some identity issues. So while pretending
to be a fireman, or a doctor, or a lawyer, or whatever your parents want you to be, you should be sure to try on a few identities that are
totally impossible. Steampunk will help you, because you cannot, ever, be an authentic denizen of the 19th century. You will meet interesting
people your own age who share your vague discontent with today’s status quo. Clutch them to your velvet-frilled bosom, because
you will learn more from them than you ever will from your teachers.
Stretching your self-definition will help you when, in later life, you are forced to become something your parents could not even imagine.
This is a likely fate for you. Your parents were born in the 20th century. Soon their 20th century world will seem even deader, weirder
and more remote than the 19th. The 19th-century world was crude, limited and clanky, but the 20th-century world is calamitously
unsustainable. I would advise you to get used to thinking of all your tools, toys and possessions as weird oddities destined for the recycle
bin. Imagine starting all over with radically different material surroundings. Get used to that idea.
If you are European, you may further realize that you are surrounded by an ever-growing European “museum economy” that sells your
heritage as a “heritage industry.” Familiarity with steampunk will certainly help you here. The heritage industry does not sell heritage,
because heritage is inherently unsellable. Instead, it sells the tourist-friendly, simplified, Photoshopped, price-tagged, Disneyized version
of heritage. Steampunk is great at mocking and parodizing this activity. That’s what makes steampunk a thoroughly contemporary act.
This dress-up costume play and these subcultural frolics will amuse and content 90 percent of the people involved in steampunk.
However, you may possibly be one of those troublesome 10 percent guys, not just in the scene but creating a scene. Frankly, the heaviest
guys in the steampunk scene are not really all that into “steam.” Instead, they are into punk. Specifically, punk’s do-it-yourself aspects
and its determination to take the means of production away from big, mind-deadening companies who want to package and sell shrinkwrapped
cultural product.
Steampunks are modern crafts people who are very into spreading the means and methods of working in archaic technologies. If you
meet a steampunk craftsman and he or she doesn’t want to tell you how he or she creates her stuff, that’s a poseur who should be avoided.
Find the creative ones who want to help you, and who don’t leave you feeling hollow, drained and betrayed. They exist. You might be
one.
Steampunk began as a literary movement -- for some reason no one understands, it started with young Californian fantasists writing
about Victorian Great Britain, specifically James P. Blaylock, Tim Powers and K. W. Jeter. This guy Jeter made up the term “steampunk.”
He made no money doing that, and you’ve likely never heard of him before now. I doubt this much bothers Jeter. Jeter was a major
disciple of Philip K. Dick, so he always understood the inherent limits of bourgeois mundane reality.
Nowadays steampunk is not about historical pastiche with a sci-fi twist, because, although that’s interesting, there’s not a whole lot of
room for literary maneuver there. Steampunk has become popular now because it is no longer just fiction. It is an international design
and technology effort. Steampunk a counterculture arts and crafts movement in a 21st century guise.
If this idea makes your heart beat faster, I can save you a lot of trouble by recommending one brief essay called “On the Nature of the
Gothic” by John Ruskin, the greatest design critic of the original steam era. Go read it. Read this manifesto with great care because it
was the seed of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau, William Morris wallpaper, Aubrey Beardsley Yellow Book
decadence, romantic-nationalist architecture and about a thousand other things most steampunks would consider very cool.
Ruskin wrote an extremely influential and important essay which changed the world. Everything Ruskin says in that essay is wrong. The
ideas in there don’t work, have never worked and are never going to work. If you try to do the things Ruskin described in the spirit that
Ruskin suggested, you are doomed.
However. If you try to do those things in a steampunk spirit, you might get somewhere useful. Steampunks are equipped with a number
of creative tools and approaches that John Ruskin never imagined, such as design software, fabricators, Instructables videos, websites,
wikis, cellphones, search engines and etsy.com. Successful steampunks are not anti-industrial as Ruskin was. They are digital natives and
therefore post-industrial. This means that they can make their own, brand-new, fresh mistakes -- if they understand the old mistakes
well enough not to repeat them.
INTRODUCTION
Steampunk’s key lessons are not about the past. They are about the instability and obsolescence of our own times. A host of objects and
services that we see each day all around us are not sustainable. They will surely vanish, just as “Gone With the Wind” like Scarlett
O’Hara’s evil slave-based economy. Once they’re gone, they’ll seem every bit as weird and archaic as top hats, crinolines, magic lanterns,
clockwork automatons, absinthe, walking-sticks and paper-scrolled player pianos.
We are a technological society. When we trifle, in our sly, Gothic, grave-robbing fashion, with archaic and eclipsed technologies, we are
secretly preparing ourselves for the death of our own tech. Steampunk is popular now because people are unconsciously realizing that
the way that we live has already died. We are sleepwalking. We are ruled by rapacious, dogmatic, heavily-armed fossil-moguls who rob
us and force us to live like corpses. Steampunk is a pretty way of coping with this truth.
The hero of the funeral is already dead. He has no idea what is happening. A funeral is theater for the living.
Steampunk is funereal theater. It’s a pageant. A pageant selectively pumps some life into the parts of the past that can excite us, such as
the dandified gear of aristocrats, peculiar brass gadgets, rather stilted personal relationships and elaborate and slightly kinky underwear.
Pageants repress the aspects of the past that are dark, gloomy, ugly, foul, shameful and catastrophic. But when you raise the dead, they
bring their baggage.
There’s not a lot we can do about the past; but we should never despair of it, because, as Czeslaw Milosz wisely said, the past takes its
meaning from whatever we do right now. The past has a way of sticking to us, of sticking around, of just plain sticking. Even if we wrap
the past around us like a snow-globe, so as to obscure our many discontents with our dangerous present, that willful act will change our
future. Because that’s already been tried. It was tried repeatedly. Look deep enough, try not to flinch, and it’s all in the record. So: never
mock those who went before you unless you have the courage to confront your own illusions.
The past is a kind of future that has already happened.

02L > OUTSIDE STANDING LEVEL
02L is the acronym for Outside Standing Level, a multidisciplinary and transnational group of mixed
artists and technical gurus, working since 2000 on live and installative projects dealing with crossedover
senses aided by machine computations, digital media, sound distortions and motion capturing,
bridging the physical world with codes, aesthetic and noise.
Mostly active in Europe and Los Angeles, with several headquarters scattered throughout Germany,
Italy and Spain, over time 02L racked up a huge list of experiences and live shows, enriching the scene
with astonishing and innovative burning live setups.
For Gogbot 08, 02L announces THE SPECIAL PLAYER - a project about high-quality silhouette
tracking and vector based effects with gesture playback, conceived mainly for choreography support,
mixed with Unita`Zero, who puts on show work comprising a system for managing interactive audio
and video, including a multimedia workstation, 02L TECLA and its relative interface system with
pressure sensors.
By stamping their feet on the platforms, spectators will activate a search inside an audio-video database:
the clips selected by the software will then be reproduced by the acoustic diffusers and projected
onto the screen. This interaction is scalable for up to five people simultaneously. the Zoo Animal and
Digitally Wild projects will change according to the number of active interactions and their distributor,
proportionally increasing the level of tension and audio-video communication. Tecla turns the
spectator’s movements into musical shapes and optics.
From a simple gesture through to dance steps, it is a machine that lets the audience experience interactive
sensations through a multi-sensory structure. Sequences are issued by operating triggers that
correspond to every gesture code.
It’s a clear example of merging various disciplines that mixes micro-controllers, data networks and advanced
systems for real time analysis to determine sound, video and light design. Interactive heavens
for technological angels.
THE SHAIDON EFFECT
The Shaidon Effect is with Ganz De Ville, the band co-fonder of the SACCHAROSE EXS netlabel, one
of the biggest and successfull production of 02L > Outside Standing Level.
Specialized on dizzness and wizard techno mash up, they confirm them self with HOPI remix, one of
the favorite mixmaster of Paul Ferrara ( photographer of Jim Morrison ) and The Doors.
The Shaidon Effect is a group and dj set project coming from Italy but Berlin-based live performers
with cutting-edge sequencing, mainly devoted to techno-psychedelic DJ set and deranged high-techology
Live set: they drive sounds with a strong accent on a quasi caffeinated-driven rhythm. Really
filthy straight slamming duty-noise on and realtime video effects.
The sound itselfs complains electronic and distorted techno break-core grabbing triggering, slicing
skyrocketing guitar, hang in balance between ethnic tribalism, funeral ceremonials and psychedelic
settings, obscure hues and claustrophobic atmospheres.
Their mashup production may be considered part of the European bastard pop musical genre.
They have also been described negatively as “the logical extension of the sampling fever of the ‘80s
taken to its dumbest extreme”. Due to the questionable legal status of mash ups and little chance of
profits “there’s a real punk rock attitude attached to the movement”.
The Shaidon Effect perform THE SPECIAL PLAYER show at Gogbot Festival 08, and a Dj set bringing
the power of motion tracking to an astonished audience, tickling it with the most synergic expression
ever.
GANZ DE VILLE
It was Ganz De Ville who, with The Shaidon Effect, founded the 02L OUTSIDE STANDING LEVEL´s
net label SACCHAROSE EXS. His 100% mash-up style consists of song created out of pieces of two
or more songs, usually overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of
another.
He lead the featured project with Jim Morrison photographer and The Doors filmaker Paul Ferrara.
Ganz was born and raised in Italy, he was trained in classical music from childhood. At the age of
The process which started in that style lead him to a perfectly balance
Kubic’s Cube (2005)
Installation Performance
Kubic is a two and a half meter long aluminium robot that hangs from a ceiling, and moves according
to the construction of its limbs as it performs to the music and sounds of Francisco López.
Kubic’s Cube is a performative Installation with Kubic acting as a dance-machine, a cubist kinetic
sculpture and an instrument of rhythmic movement.
The Installation (3 hours)
Kubic hangs in a dark space surrounded by sounds of a jungle, and illuminated by a video projector.
The public moves freely in space and regards the robot from different perspectives. Pablo Ventura has
programmed a choreography in which static positions and coincidental movement patterns produce
the illusion that the robot is alive.
By means of a motion tracking software, a beam of light is projected unto the robot’s articulations varying
in intensity as it moves according to programmed random positions of Kubic. An ambivalence
takes place between the sounds of organic life in a jungle and a machine, and the public’s perception of
Kubic fluctuates between a Kinetic sculpture and a living organism.
“Technocalyps is an impressive voyage through technological developments and scientific fantasies, but it is above all a rich documentary
about ideas. Frank Theys has managed that the often utopian discourses of scientists is paralleled by the sober view of the artist. It is this
view that elucidates the sometimes complex theories by connecting them to artistic and filosofical reflections. ”

ARCATTACK
A spectacular high voltage experience of ear-shattering high-tech electronic composition.
Creators of the original Singing Tesla Coils, the crew of ArcAttack uses high tech wizardry to present
music in a whole new light.
ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation (an HVDJ set up) to generate an ‘electrifying’
audio visual performance (special guest appearance at he opening-night by Jason Forrest).
The HVDJ pumps music through a PA System while two specially designed DRSSTC’s (Dual-Resonant
Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments.
These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt which put
out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers. The music
consists of original highly dance-able electronic compositions that sometimes incorporates themes or
dub of popular songs.
Lightning that plays music, seriously.
Super mario-tastic electronic music things that make sounds with freakin’ huge bolts of lightning.
“hommage to the RIB” (Rigid Inflatable boat)
A rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) is a light-weight
but high performance and high capacity boat
constructed with a solid, shaped hull and flexible
tubes at the gunwale. The design is stable
and seaworthy. The inflatable collar means that
buoyancy is not lost if a large quantity of water is
shipped aboard.
Homage (from the French: Hommage) is generally
used in modern English to mean any public
show of respect to someone to whom one feels
indebted.
REINIER KRANENDONK
mean meat machine
rolluik bereiken tenzij haar doorgefokte lichaam
wilt u uw stukje vlees?
This work was commissioned specially for the SIGN gallery in
Groningen. SIGN was originally a butchery where pieces of pig,
horse and cow entered by a large shutter door (which can be seen
on the picture in the 2007 folder). Why this came to an end is not
clear, but I would wager a guess that the competition became to
fierce. The Pig hangs in its cage with its head towards the door.
She can run all she wants but will never reach it unless her fattened
body vibrates itself loose from the meathooks. It is not a
pretty picture but is appropriate at a time that discussions about
pig flats (multistory industrial pig sties) and animal welfare are
raging. What is a pig? How do you want your slice of meat?

KATINKA SIMONSE aka TINKEBELL
almost 18+ memoriabilia
ALMOST 18+ memorabilia
A vending machine presented at the Gogbot festival where one can buy used teenager’s underwear for a couple of Euros.
Last year a witch hunt in the mass media lasting months ensued when the “Party for Neigbourly Love, Freedom and Diversity” was
founded, advocating total freedom, including the lowering of the legal age of sexual maturity to 12, but at the same time the popularity
of “Barely 18” porn sites was strictly ignored in the debate. When people assumed the online persona of underaged prostitutes in Second
Life, the Dutch Socialist Party wanted to ban it immediately, but here again the online sale of used children’s underwear was kept out
of focus. In all these cases the visible excess generated a strong reaction to ban it, with citizens mobilising en masse to apportion guilt,
but those aspects of the porn industry balancing dangerously on the fine line dividing maturity and immaturity, which are commonly
consumed by the public at large, were conveniently forgotten. It appears that the confrontation may not get too close for comfort. Katinka
Simonse’s ALMOST 18+
memorability project attempts to bring exactly that confrontation to the fore.
Tinkebell has a solo exhibition at the new PLANETART medialab artspace in the Volkskrant building in Amsterdam. See www.tinkebell.
GUIDO TUINK + DANIEL BENNETT
in containers (trash). In zijn absurdistische installaties
mixt hij humor en naargeestigheid in een
kleurig geheel.
Guido Tuink’s work is constructed of all manner of materials that he finds on the street and in skips (trash). His absurdist installations
mix humour and misery into a colourful whole. His works usually consist of figures, dolls or masks that are hung in a space and enter
into dialogue with each other.
He draws his inspiration from the world of children’s toys, S&M, comics and ethnographic art.

By 1985 I had been exhibiting my work in galleries and museums for 10 years. I became disillusioned
with the Art World, a world that seemed academic and joyless to me. I had grown tired of preaching
to the converted.
Breaking out of these confines took the form of the LIGHTMOBILE, a Volkswagen Beetle covered
with 1659 computerized lights. I finished building it in March, 1985, after 5 months of work. I drove
it all around New York City, on more than 100 nights. The reactions were amazing: the smiles, waves,
thumbs-up, comments shouted. It was the most exhilerating experience of my life.

BOTBORG (Australia) Extreme Improvised Synaesthesia
Botborg is an international audio-visual performance group that fuses and rewires raw electronic signals
to create intensely visceral experiences of sound-colour synaesthesia.
Botborg is a practical demonstration of the theories of Dr Arkady Botborger (1923-81), founder of the
‘occult’ science of Photosonicneurokineasthography - translated as “writing the movement of nerves
through use of sound and light”. Botborg’s ‘instrument’ is the Photosonicneurokineasthograph - a
complex feedback machine incorporating an entangled mix of new and old technologies, that are altered
and customised to the unique features of every venue. Although the human operators of Botborg
are skilled manipulators of the system, it is equally unpredictable and uncontrollable, allowing Botborg
to look and sound vastly different on every occasion. All demonstrations are completely improvised
and no source material is used outside the Photosonicneurokineasthograph.
BILL SPINHOVEN
the logic of life
De installaties van Bill Spinhoven getuigen van
een fascinatie voor het spanningsveld tussen
techniek en het beeld. Het werk The Logic of Life
www.spinhoven.nl
Bill Spinhoven’s installations bear witness to a fascination for the
tension between technology and image. The work The Logic of
Life points to nineteenth century film and projection techniques.
Using the paradoxal nature of the work, the application of (proto)
cinematographic techniques and the references to Icarus and
Daedalus and their desperate attept at flight, he not only plays
with reality, but also with the expectations of the viewer.
CHRISTIAAN ZWANIKKEN
roboto-zoologica
leeft, maakt Christiaan Zwanikken gebruik.
of opgezette dieren in beweging brengt.
In werken
als Put Your Heads Together en Monsieur
Houdin, N’Oubliez Pas Votre Oiseau!, die het
gedrag van levende mensen of dieren nabootsen,
onderzoekt en ondervraagt hij de natuur.
Robots engender fear but also inspire feelings of tenderness. In
his roboto-zoölogica, Christiaan Zwanikken makes use of this
empathic tendency, using technology to reanimate the remains
of once living animals. In the impressive kinetic works Put Your
Heads Together (2000), Salto Mortale (2005), Het Nachtkastje
van Alice (2007), Tesla’s Kat (2008) and Houdin, N’Oubliez Pas
Votre Oiseau! (2008), he investigates and interrogates nature
down to the core of its essence.

the darkhouse quarter
The Darkhouse Quarter is een doorlopend project.
In the ongoing project The Darkhouse Quarter the British artist Stephen Rothwell confronts the viewer with a caleidoscopically fragmented
archive of images that suggest a history and a retro-futuristic society. They are windows on a utopic or dystopic landscape and
a society in postapocalyptic decay.
The Australian Stelarc is a pioneer and a living legend. He is active in performance, science and art
and is literally the concept made flesh. He started his groundbreaking work in the 70’s and did not
recoil from subjecting his own body to his work. He explored the application of medical instruments,
prostheses, robotics, virtual reality and biotechnology and used these to create new body-interfaces.
where students are stimulated to explore the froniers of image and sound of new media and technology within the framework of applied
art.
During the GOGBOT Festival interactive art installations will be exhibited that were desgined specially for shops in Enschede as part
of the “De Verleiding” (“The Seduction”) project. This unique exhibition lasted from July 8th to 10th 2008.
sound by sculpture
Live performance daily! at 17h
Sound by Sculpture is an installation containing
10 little machines that take you on a trip through
a world of mechanics. The machines consist of
a wooden pedestal that also acts as a resonator
and a mechanism that is powered by a 220-Volt
motor. Sound by Sculpture can be used to create
a composition via mechanical sounds. The
sounds of the machines are used as samples,
created and operated live through a switchboard
and an audio mixer. The aural world created by
these sounds transcends the visible machinery
and rises high above it, reminiscent of a monolithic
factory.

RICO PRONK
omgeving.
Zijn kunst is te zien op www.ricopronk.nl
Rico Pronk’s art playfully references the industrial revolution. He designs applied
light art, but also dabbled in sound art with “Kisten”, installations that
made noises, but were lost in the fi rework factory disaster in Enschede. Rico
created a sound montage for the GOGBOT festival in the ‘De Krachtbron’
space in the industrial part of the Twentse Welle. It is
based on the rhythmic sounds of steam engines, and in combination with the
steam enginein the room and a switchboard an ‘industrial-meditative’ environment
emerges.
FRANK THEYS
Lecture & discussion around Tecyhnocalyps after 1 hour of the film in MAC Berlijn. The 3 hour film
is on screen in the Church tower.
Technocalyps is an intriguing documentary on the notion of transhumanism by Belgian visual artist
and filmmaker Frank Theys. The latest findings in genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence, bionics and
nanotechnology appear in the media every day, but with no analysis of their common aim: that of
exceeding human limitations and creating new, higher forms of life.
While some scientists raise the alarm, others want to speed up the advances to be alive when immortality
will be at hand, to become transhumans themselves, to become gods.
Is this an updated version of age-old religious dreams or are we for the first time confronted with the
prospect to turn these dreams into reality?
Frank Theys conducts his enquiry into the scientific, ethical and metaphysical dimensions of technological
development. The film includes interviews by top experts on the subject and thinkers worldwide,
including Marvin Minsky, Ray Kurzweil, Hans Moravec, Bruce Sterling, Terence McKenna, Robert
Anton Wilson, Margaret Wertheim, The Dalai Lama and many more.
Victorian Magicians & Machine Elves/re-entering the Dream World
Deus Ex Machina is a benevolent deity emerging from the above, which at the end of the blood
smeared Greek Tragedies solved even the most hopeless situations, instantaneously.
Around the Fin-De Siècle a group of young artists known as the Pre-Raphaelites emerged. They fiercely
rebelled towards the rise of the machine-era and all its ugliness. Despise of hard machinery noise,
the dangerous labour and the appaling pollution sustained a deep longing for the early époque of
Romantism.
Dimethyltryptamine or DMT is a drug derivable from several species such as Mimosa and Psychotria,
provides the user with an intense outer body journey which may last for 15 min. During the experience
the traveler will find himself at a portal, when crossed over finding yourself surrounded with
obnoxious squeaking glass- like machine fairies. Witches experiencing nightly flights was also believed
to leave her body. Enabled by ancient knowledge of natural poisons and herbal extracts she could lift
up the physical barrier that divides the Dream World from us, hence expand her senses. Perceptive
alteration facilitated through mostly sophisticated pharmacy.
DNA and Nanotechnology eventually leads us to a whole new era of body manipulations and alterations.
Supplemental neural chips or implantates, many medical wonders have already become a daily
reality. Science is rapidly advancing to a state no biological limitations will be an inhibiting factor to
us. We are simply too curious as a species to leave any possibility unexplored.
Cyberpunk is not dead: information wants to be free
In the panorama of existing operating systems we see that there is a great number of possibilities to
listen: all kinds of “free to download” players for audio and video, but no easy way for everybody
to speak out loud and spread their words. The way communication is structured follows a hierarchy
of well established powers and, worst than ever, money is the main requirement for making a voice
spread and possible to be heard by others.
Neverthless, proprietary software spreads the dependence from business companies thru the
populace: whenever we share our knowledge on how to use a certain software we make the people
in need to buy the tools from merchants in order to express their creativity: the need to buy then
becomes slavery under the patronage of capitalism.
A.C. ter Kuile is opgericht in 1923.
VERNIAN PROCESS - ‘Behold The Machine’:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKAST0gNRYc Nog een zelfverklaarde Steampunk. Muzikaal zit
THE MASQUERADE PROJECT - ‘Steamed’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thHMuXEFBPs
SLEEPY TIME GORILLA MUSEUM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyco68w5ks
STARBASE 109 - ‘Engineering Workshop’:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVp8UbK2O9k
enigmatische, rookspuwende machines.
NINE INCH NAILS - ‘closer’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWncI51ggH8
SMASHING PUMPKINS - ‘Tonight, Tonight’:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsZYqaSc4cU
EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN - ‘Blume’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV3R5vdxnMk
ULTRAVOX - ‘Vienna’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3OaIsqtG64
stemmige popklassieker.
STEAMPUNK VIDEOCLIPS
MIRRORMASK - ‘Close to you’ scene (filmfragment):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz8-7JsFD_g
