I hope you are all enjoying summer as much as I am.<br />
Preparations for our <strong>Volksfest</strong> are well under way. Yes, Labor Day Weekend will be here in just a few short<br />
weeks. As always, we are counting on you, our members, to make it happen.<br />
Thanks to your dedication and hard work, our festival has grown considerably over the years; to the point<br />
where we cannot sustain the momentum without additional help.<br />

VOLKSFEST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED<br />
Much of the work is physically demanding and many of our veteran volunteers have neither the agility nor<br />
the stamina they once had. We need reinforcements, not only over Labor Day Weekend but, perhaps more<br />
importantly, in the weeks leading up to the Fest. The Fruchtsäule (fruit column) alone entails a tremendous<br />
amount of work and Chairman Gustav Plankenhorn needs all the help he can get. So I ask all of you, if at all<br />
possible, to come out and lend a hand. Bring family. Bring friends. We work hard, but we also have a lot<br />
of fun. (Not to mention that lunch, dinner, and refreshments are provided for all our volunteers.)<br />
To become a CVV volunteer, please get in touch with Gustav, Roman, any CVV Director or veteran<br />
volunteer.<br />
Thank you for your ongoing support of our club; and I look forward to seeing all of you within the next few<br />
weeks and at <strong>Cannstatter</strong> <strong>Volksfest</strong>.<br />

Saturday/Samstag 13 CAR SHOW IN THE C.V.V. PARK - The Cruisin Car Club will hold their “Summer Car<br />
Show.” There will be food and refreshments available in the park throughout the day.<br />
Starts at 11:00 AM. Rain date will be Sunday the 14th. For more information see the<br />
ad in the newsletter on page 19.<br />
Saturday/Samstag 20 KOLPING BENEFIT FOR LOUISA BERGEY - Starts at 7:00 PM in the <strong>Cannstatter</strong><br />
Crystal Room. A benefit to aid Louisa Bergey and Life Member of both the<br />
<strong>Cannstatter</strong> and the Kolping Society will be held. Louisa suffered a severe injury<br />
several months ago and a Beef & Beer will be held to help her with the costs and<br />
recovery. Tickets are $30.00 in advance and $35.00 at the door. For more<br />

Saturday/Samstag 3 139TH CANNSTATTER LABOR DAY, 3-DAY WEEKEND VOLKSFEST - Come and<br />
Sunday/Sonntag 4 start your Labor Day weekend Saturday with a 3-day pass and you will be<br />
Monday/Montag 5 entertained by 2 bands, including one from Germany. In addition, on Saturday<br />
only will be Philadelphia’s own Greater Kensington String Band. For more details<br />
see the ad on pages 16 & 17. YOU MUST PAY THE ENTRANCE FEE ON THE<br />
THREE DAYS TO ENTER THE DINING ROOM OR THE PARK GROUNDS.<br />
Thursday/Donnerstag 22 DIE ALTEN HERREN (THE OLD GENTLEMAN) - Will celebrate their seventh<br />
Anniversary entertaining their Bingo players in the Gustav Plankenhorn Hall. Every<br />
Thursday you can eat at the <strong>Cannstatter</strong> between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM or at<br />
the snack bar in the bingo hall. The hall opens at 3:00 PM and the games start at<br />
6:30 PM. See the ad on page 24.<br />
Friday/Freitag 23 STEUBEN PARADE BANQUET - This year’s Steuben Parade Banquet will be held<br />
at the United German Hungarian Club in Oakford, PA for tickets and information<br />
call 215-332-3400. See the ad on page 9.<br />
Saturday/Samstag 24 STEUBEN DAY PARADE - The 41st Annual Parade will return to northeast<br />
Philadelphia at Frankford Ave. and Welsh Road. It will proceed south on Frankford<br />
Ave. There will be a mass before the parade at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church.<br />
The parade starts at 12 noon. For more information see the ad on page 9.<br />
October/Oktober 2011<br />
Wednesday/Mittwoch 5 CVV LADIES CARD PARTY AND GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - Starts 1:00<br />
PM. Coffee & Cake, (No Charge to Members).<br />
Friday/Freitag 7 GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY - At City Hall at noon. Proclamation Ceremony with<br />
Mayor Michael Nutter immediately thereafter a cocktail reception with hors<br />
d’oeuvres in Conversation Hall.<br />
Wednesday/Mittwoch12 CANNSTATTER LADIES OKTOBERFEST LUNCHEON - The luncheon begins 12:00<br />
noon sharp at a cost of $12.00 per person. Tickets will be sold in advance only.<br />

Saturday/Samstag 15 THE SONS OF THE DESERT - A evening of dance. “The Blackbird Society<br />

Sunday/Sonntag 30 CANNSTATTER ANNUAL SCHLACHTFEST - Dinners will consist of our famous<br />
pork platter, leber and blutwurst. In addition we will have our regular ala Carte<br />
dinner menu available. Sunday dinners are from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The<br />
schlachtfest dinner will also be offered on Sunday, November 7.<br />
November/November 2011<br />
Wednesday/Mittwoch 2 CANNSTATTER LADIES HOLIDAY PENNY PARTY - Everyone can join us for<br />
coffee and cake plus lots of nice prizes. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Cost per person<br />

Saturday/Samstag 5 G.T.V. ALMRAUSCH OKTOBERFEST - Doors open at 6:00 PM. “The Alpenlaenders<br />

performances by the GTV Almrausch. Food and drinks will be available for<br />

Swabian/Schwäbisch<br />

Many of our members are several generations<br />
removed from their immigrant ancestors and in a<br />
desire to reconnect with their roots have signed up for<br />
a German language course, a decision which I<br />
applaud. In their course they study standard German<br />
or High German - Hoch Deutsch - but High German is<br />
something of an artificial<br />
language first developed by<br />
Martin Luther in his<br />
translation of the Bible. He<br />
attempted to develop a<br />
language which combined<br />
features of the dialects<br />
spoken in the mountainous<br />
regions of central and<br />
Southern Germany, hence<br />
the term High German as<br />
opposed to Low German or<br />
the dialects spoken in the<br />
low areas of Northern<br />
Germany.<br />
Despite Luther’s effort the<br />
local dialects persisted<br />
although High German was<br />
taught in the schools.<br />
Someone once described a<br />
language as a dialect with<br />
an army and navy so the<br />
Low German dialects spoken<br />
in the Netherlands and<br />
England became Dutch and<br />
English instead of just being local dialects.<br />
In the area of Southwestern Germany from where the<br />
founders of the <strong>Cannstatter</strong> came, the local dialect<br />
was Swabian or Schwäbisch and variants are spoken<br />
in Switzerland as well as Alsace. Many of the socalled<br />
Pennsylvania Dutch came from this region and<br />
they speak a form of German very close to Swabian.<br />
There are several aspects of Swabian which<br />
differentiate it from formal standard German. Perhaps<br />

the most obvious is a vowel switch where for example<br />
the round “a” becomes a long “o” and as a result a<br />
Schwab is called a Schwob. The umlauted “o” as in<br />
schön where it is pronounced like “er” but in Swabian<br />
it becomes pronounced like English long “a”, as in<br />
hay. Diminutives are not formed by the suffix “es,”<br />
“chen” or “lein” as in<br />
Hänschen and Gretchen but<br />
with “el” so we have Hänsel<br />
and Gretel.<br />
Another characteristic of<br />
Swabian is the dropping of<br />
the “ch” is words such as<br />
ich, auch and nicht which<br />
then become “i” -<br />
pronounced as English long<br />
“e” as in see - au -<br />
pronounced owl - and nit.<br />
The “ch” is not the only<br />
thing dropped. Adjective<br />
endings and verb endings<br />
are too, as well as interior<br />
consonants and vowels, so<br />
you can hear such phrases<br />
as Mir han instead of wir<br />
haben - oops I neglected to<br />
point out that the labials<br />
“w” and “m” are sometimes<br />
interchanged.<br />
These are but a few of the characteristics which<br />
distinguish Swabian from standard German and which<br />
make the local dialect interesting and individualistic.<br />
Field Marshall Erwin Rommel - no relation to our past<br />
president - according to his biographer, enjoyed<br />
speaking in the dialect to people from Swabia. If you<br />
are - as I have often advised - taking a course in<br />
German, ask your instructor about some of these<br />
differences and set the class in a fun direction.<br />

Now it is only one more month and our annual threeday<br />
Labor Day event is knocking at the door.<br />
Looking back to April, this year Easter was a<br />
wonderful day and the weather was just right. The<br />
Easter Egg Hunt was a complete success in the<br />
<strong>Cannstatter</strong> Park under the blue sky. The Easter Bunny<br />
had an easy time hiding the eggs, so the little ones<br />
had a wonderful time finding them. Some of the eggs<br />
were so well hidden that as our directors held our<br />
spring cleaning day there were still a few missing<br />
eggs found on the grounds. This year the club hosted<br />
two Easter Egg Hunts. New for this year was the one<br />
held on the Sunday before Easter by the Kolping Club,<br />
who now makes the <strong>Cannstatter</strong> their home. They<br />
welcomed all the children of members of both clubs.<br />
Plus as usual the second one was held on Easter<br />
morning by the <strong>Cannstatter</strong> Club.<br />
Mother’s Day dinner was again a busy Sunday for<br />
the club as it has been in the past. The waitresses<br />
and kitchen staff did their best to make our customers<br />
feel welcome.<br />
The Kolping Club was first this year in holding an<br />
event using the outside facilities. They held a picnic<br />
that was open to the public.<br />
The band Blackthorn returned to the <strong>Cannstatter</strong><br />
for the Memorial Day weekend to entertain their<br />
guests with music in the park. This event was<br />
accompanied with Irish food and beer. It was an<br />
enjoyable and successful day as all the years before.<br />
On the first Sunday in June it was the<br />
<strong>Cannstatter</strong>’s official park opening day for 2011. For<br />
all the guests there was plenty of food and drinks<br />
available at the outdoor stands. I also have to thank<br />
St. Medard the Patron Saint against bad weather for<br />
the beautiful day. There were games to play with<br />
prizes to win for children of all ages throughout the<br />
afternoon. The highlight of the afternoon was<br />
introducing Miss <strong>Cannstatter</strong> 2011-2012, Julia<br />
Duffield to all the people present in the park. Some of<br />
our indoor guests were also lucky enough to meet<br />
Julia behind the bar as she was serving them drinks.<br />
The summer months in the club are always more<br />
peaceful in comparison to the rest of the year. Some<br />
of the recent changes made at the club were the<br />
addition of lunch being served in the club’s Stuttgarter<br />
Bar every Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM<br />
and also now the club is offering lunch on Sunday’s<br />
from 11 AM to 2 PM in the dining room along with the<br />
usual offering of dinner from 1 PM to 7 PM.<br />
There will be three events in August this year. The<br />
Ladies’ Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, August<br />
3rd and the Car Show will also return on Saturday,<br />
August 13th in the park. The Kolping Club will have a<br />
Beef & Beer on Saturday, August 20th. You can see<br />
these events all listed on the “Upcoming Events”<br />
pages of the magazine.<br />
Yes, for some of us the summer will pass by faster<br />
than we wish, like every summer in the past. For me<br />
personally, since I’ve known there is a 4th of July, I<br />
always have this feeling that when we pass that<br />
holiday the summer starts heading straight towards<br />
its end. This is especially noticeable when you have<br />
picnics in your backyard and you have to light up the<br />
torches to keep the mosquitoes away as darkness<br />
comes earlier every weekend.<br />
For us at the <strong>Cannstatter</strong> the month of August<br />
means preparing and building up for the upcoming 3day<br />
Labor Day weekend. And so with this in mind we<br />
hope the weather this year will return the same as it<br />
did for us last year and I hope I see you there on one<br />
of the three days or even better on all three days.<br />
Should this holiday weekend be a bit boring for you<br />
don’t forget we can always find a job for you to help<br />
the club over that weekend. Any help from our<br />
members and friends is always appreciated. All are<br />
welcome to help! Therefore I am looking forward to<br />
seeing you at the Bratwurst stand.<br />

We will sponsor a day at the races on<br />
Sunday, September 25th at PARX Racetrack.<br />
We will be under a pavilion, close to a children’s play area, betting kiosk bar and lavatories.<br />
The casino is nearby along with the paddock. One of the day’s races will be designated as a<br />
Kolping Society Race, and our group can have photos taken with the winner of the race. The<br />
price of $40. 00 per person will include your park entrance, food, beer and some wine. Children<br />
under 12 are free. We need a minimum of 30 people.<br />
