Letter from The President & Board Chair
Dear Friends,
As an organization, we have experienced
situations this year that have taught us a
lot about the power of hope. Without it, our
lives seem meaningless and dull. Many of
the individuals who go through our programs
find hope when they come to Blind and Vision
Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh (BVRS).
When individuals lose their sight, they
are often told there is nothing more medically
that can be done. They report a feeling of
hopelessness. In addition, they may be told
they can no longer continue to work or engage
in the leisure activities they love—messages
that must make them feel even more hopeless.
Many of the individuals who come to BVRS
for services tell us they were depressed and
without purpose for their future before they
found us. They frequently tell us they sat on
the couch and relied on friends and family to do
things for them because they were afraid.
And then…
We taught them how to get around
independently in their homes and communities.
We provided emotional support to help
them deal with the loss of their sight.
We asked them what they like to do for fun

and helped them figure out ways to continue
doing those activities.
We trained them how to cook, do laundry,
and other household tasks.
We taught them to label items like clothes
and prescriptions.
We taught them to read Braille.
We provided computer training that allowed
them to seek employment, go to school, or just
communicate with others via e-mail.
And then…
They felt hope again for their lives.
They realized that losing sight does not
mean that life has to end.
As leaders of this organization, that makes
us extremely proud. We know, too, that BVRS
staff members and volunteers take great pride
in this accomplishment.
The resiliency of the human spirit when
hope is present never ceases to amaze us.
Each and every person who goes through our
programs works very hard to obtain their goals
and get back to living each day to the fullest.
We know as you read their stories, you will be
as amazed as we are each and every day.

research, word processing and other computer
technology that would help in her college career at the
University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

Last winter, Nell Falatek came to BVRS for low vision services. At
the time, she could not read at all. She was able to sign her name
to checks — out of habit — but she could not see her signature.
She’s now reading again with special, prescribed optical devices
and training she received at BVRS.

Amara Keller didn’t know she was legally blind in her left
eye. She’s just 4 years old. Her mom, Sharawnda Smith,
did not know either. After a BVRS vision screening at
Amara’s day care center found a problem, Sharawnda
knew she needed to follow up with an eye doctor. Now
the cute preschooler is wearing glasses and looking very
cool.

Brian Slagel had aspirations of being an airplane
mechanic. He studied at an aviation school in Florida
and after graduation, he headed back to his hometown
in Pittsburgh. For various reasons, however, he ended
up taking a job with Giant Eagle as a truck driver
delivering groceries. He loved that job and his employer.
Unfortunately, he came upon a huge roadblock.
In 2000, Brian went to his optometrist to get eyeglasses
because he had trouble reading. Instead, the optometrist
told him he needed to go to his medical doctor. Brian was
diagnosed with optic neuropathy, a degenerative disease of
the optic nerve that can lead to blindness. He has no sight
in his right eye and some sight in his left eye. Eyeglasses
would not be the solution. Brian hid the diagnosis from
his employer, quietly moving from driving a truck to a
warehouse position.
BVRS Training Prepares This Single Father
For the Future

Brian completed the program in May. “The staff at
BVRS is flexible, understanding, caring, compassionate—
everything they should be, they are,” he says. “And it’s good
to know they are out there.”
Born in Ross Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh where he
lived most of his life, Brian, 43, now lives in nearby West
View. He is a single father who is raising three daughters
and a son, ages 9, 10, 14, and 15. His children are handling
the change in their father well.
Brian came to Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services
of Pittsburgh (BVRS) on January 23, 2012, for the

Finally last December, Brian met with his boss. “Here’s
what’s going on,” Brian told his boss, “I can’t see.”
Personal Adjustment to Blindness Training program, a
comprehensive residential program in which individuals
learn to manage their lives with vision loss. The program
focuses on communication, techniques of daily living,
household tasks such as safe cooking, orientation and
mobility, exercise, sensory training, leisure time activities,
Brian is on a leave of absence now from Giant Eagle
and considering a career change. In January, he plans to
start a marriage and family counseling degree program at
LaRoche College.

Fifteen-year year-old TJ lost his eyesight in a quad
ATV accident. He participated in our five-week
summer youth program for high school students
who are blind, deaf-blind, or vision impaired. “I am
the only totally blind kid in my high school, so it is
awesome to meet other blind kids.”
After a week last spring in the BVRS Access
Technology Center, Carolyn Giambalvo feels
she’s received a good education on technology
terminology and is more confident in her ability
to perform searches on a computer. “I’ll be able
to navigate databases more easily,” which
will help in her job as a consumer services
assistant at the Guide Dog Foundation for the
Blind in Smithtown, NY.

for the expansion of its eMployMent
opportunities projeCt serving youth
with CoMplex disaBilities.
Joelle Swyka, a senior at Moon Area High School,
has been enrolled in our youth programming since
November 2011. Following an outing to experience
dragon boating at the Three Rivers Rowing Association,
Joelle decided to join the Association and learn
to compete in competitive dragon boat races.
Brenda Davis participates in BVRS’ Community
Transition day program and was the
featured artist for the spring art show. She
has a definite eye for design, an enthusiasm
for color, and loves spending her days here
working on art projects.

THE CHUCK NOLL ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE SOCIETY
The Chuck Noll Road to Independence Society was established to pay tribute to Mr. Noll. When he retired
from the Steelers, Mr. Noll joined the Board of Directors of The Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind,
noting the similarity between his approach to success in football and the agency’s success in rehabilitation.
When the Guild consolidated with Pittsburgh Blind Association, Chuck Noll became the first Chairman
of the Board of the new agency, now called Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh.
Members of the prestigious Chuck Noll Road to Independence Society pledge unrestricted gifts of at
least $1,000 per year for five years.
