The faculty and students of APU’s Outdoor Studies (OS)
degree program don’t slow down often. There’s just too much
to learn and explore in the world’s biggest classroom. But even
the busiest of the OS bunch paused to reflect in 2012 when the
program turned 20.
That’s 20 years of mixing fresh air and academics, science and
history, exams and expeditions along glaciers and snowfields,
mountains and valleys, rivers and oceans. With 150 alumni
and currently more than 60 students, the program offers
something for every outdoor enthusiast with seemingly as many
certification opportunities as there are mountains in Alaska.
In 2012, OS landed on Outside Magazine’s list of top 25
colleges for academic courses that require outdoor fieldwork,
joining Stanford, Bowdoin and others. When it comes to
academic-based fieldwork, affordable travel courses and classes
that lead to professional certifications, APU ranks with the best.
The program’s roots were set by Alaska’s outdoors legends, and
its future is guided by faculty and alumni with experience,
diversity and passion. They’re developing graduates who will in
turn pass along their knowledge and enthusiasm to others who
work and play in the outdoors. It’s the kind of learning that will
keep our outdoors vibrant for the next 20 years and beyond.
