In the book, Crossing the
Threshold of Hope, Blessed
John Paul II reflects upon the
question: Is there really hope in the young? In
his answer, the Pope answers that there is, because
they seek Christ and can find in Him the
answers to their questions. The Pope follows
with: “(In 1985), young people were invited to
Rome. This was the beginning. No one invented
World Youth Days. It was the young people
themselves who created them. Those Days,
those encounters, then became somewhat desired
by the young people throughout the
world…The World Youth Days have become a
great and fascinating witness that young people
give of themselves. They have become a powerful
means of evangelization. In the youth there
RCIA
Do you know someone
who is thinking about becoming
Catholic?
by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP
Every year, thousands of people in the Archdiocese
of Detroit are welcomed into the
Catholic Church through the RCIA Process.
RCIA is an acronym for the RITE OF
CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS. The
process at St. Hugo of the Hills begins at any
time the person is ready.
The RCIA process is open to anyone who is
either:
- unbaptized adults and children of catechetical
age;
- baptized Christians who would like to become
Catholic; or,
- baptized Catholics, who are seeking to
complete their initiation by the celebration of
confirmation and/or first Eucharist.
If you or someone you know is interested in
joining the Catholic Church through the
RCIA process, please invite them to come to
an information session. You are welcome to
attend the information session with them. An
Information session will take place on
Sunday morning, August 14 at 10:00 AM in
the Parish Office Large Conference Room.
We look forward to your participation. For
more information, please contact Sr. Barbara
is, in fact, an immense potential for good and for
creative possibility. Whenever I meet them in
my travels throughout the world, I wait first of
all to hear what they want to tell me about themselves,
about their society, about their Church.
And I always point out: ‘What I am going to say
to you is not as important as what you are going
to say to me. You will not necessarily say it to
me in words; you will say it to me by your presence,
by your song, perhaps by your dancing, by
your skits, and finally by your enthusiasm.’…It
is not true that the Pope brings the young from
one end of the world to the other. It is they who
bring him.”
In two weeks, the youth of the world will bring
his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, to Madrid
and the world will once again see hope in the
young. The world will see their joy in knowing
Christ.
Believe Celebrate Live
THE EUCHARIST
Giving Thanks
Presentation of the
Gifts
As the altar is prepared, our
gifts are gathered together and
presented. From Christianity’s
very beginning, we have expressed
our devotion by the
offering of gifts. In the early
church, the offering was a
privilege of the baptized. Only
those who were to approach the
table for Communion were allowed to present gifts;
catechumens did not make an offering until the day
of their baptism. Participation in the offering was,
and is, a way of sharing in the fruits of the Mass itself,
and “an expression of the priesthood of the
faithful” (Cabié, The Eucharist, p. 82).
Some people have questioned the place of the collection
basket. Didn’t Jesus drive the moneychangers
out of the temple, they ask? Couldn’t this money
business be handled at some other time, outside of
Mass? But it is precisely during the Mass, and at
this critical point in the Mass, that the collection
needs to happen. Money is one of our most powerful
means of self-expression. What we spend our money
on reveals not only our tastes, habits, and hobbies,
but our priorities. “We should not think of the collection
of money . . . as some sort of banal, dirty but
necessary affair,” writes Father Jeremy Driscoll.
“Money is our work. Money is hours of our lives.
And now we give it away, we sacrifice it, for the
work of the Church” (Driscoll, What Happens at
Mass, p. 61).
After the collection has been taken up, members of
the assembly—representing all of those present—
bring forward the gifts, not only the collection just
taken, but more importantly, the bread and wine to
be consecrated during the Eucharistic Prayer. In the
bread and wine, we offer to God these signs of the
work of our hands, and we ask the Father to transform
them into the very Body and Blood of the Son.
We ask for this marvelous exchange, and by faith we
Page 5
know that God will take the little
we can offer and transform it into
something altogether new and
wonderful. In a symbolic way,
we offer our lives along with
these gifts, asking God to transform
them as well.
Preface Dialogue
With the words exchanged between
the priest and the assembly,
in which they once again express their desire for
the Lord in their midst, the Eucharistic Prayer begins,
the heart of the Mass. It is one great prayer,
which concludes with what is sometimes called the
“Great” Amen. This opening dialogue is among the
most ancient parts of the Christian liturgy, and was
prayed at the eucharistic celebration as early as the
second century.
Following the dialogue comes a preface prayer,
which is “a poem . . . the song of the world discovering
its salvation” (Philippe Béguerie, quoted in
Deiss, The Mass, p. 70). Because it is a poem of our
liturgy, it is meant to be sung.
The preface is addressed to God the Father (as is the
entire Eucharistic Prayer). There are many prefaces.
Nearly ninety of them focus our prayer for the various
feasts and seasons of the year. Each of them expresses,
in one way or another, why we give thanks,
by painting the history of salvation with strokes that
are bold and broad. Why do we give thanks? Because
God has given us Christ, who in his living,
dying, and rising has brought us new life. It is as
simple and as amazing as that! Each preface concludes
with an invitation to join in song—not just
any song, but the Sanctus, the “Holy, holy, holy,” the
song of the heavenly liturgy (Isaiah 6:3–4; Revelation
4:8). As Father Deiss observes, at this moment
the liturgy looks to the cosmos. The perspective is
immense. “It is both on earth and in heaven that the
angels and humanity, along with all of creation, unite in
a common exultation. . . . To the question: Is the cosmic
(Continued on page 6)

(Continued from page 5)
universe, with its millions of stars
and its millions of light-years, interested
in our Eucharist? The liturgy
answers: Yes, for Christ is the
firstborn of creation” (Deiss, p.
72).
Prayer and Action
It is hard to give just one name
to this great prayer. The Greeks
used the word anaphora, which
meant “elevation, lifting up,” and also suggested offering.
St. Gregory the Great called it simply prex,
prayer. In Rome, the term canon actionis came to be
used, which literally means “the rule for the action.”
Eventually actionis was dropped and the prayer was
called simply the canon. Perhaps it would have made
more sense to drop canon and keep actionis, for this
prayer is an action; these words make something
happen. As with all our sacramental celebrations,
word, sign, and gesture are inseparable from each
other. “There is no fully satisfactory name for this
action that is unparalleled in human experience”
(Cabié, p. 90).
After an introduction, which varies in length, each
of the Eucharistic Prayers begins by invoking the
power of the Holy Spirit. The priest extends his
hands over the gifts and prays that the Spirit will
descend on the bread and wine so they will become
the Body and Blood of Christ. He then makes the
sign of the cross over the bread and wine that have
been presented by the faithful.
The laying on of hands is one of the most ancient
and powerful signs of blessing. “Many of our sacramental
rituals, such as confirmation, reconciliation,
anointing of the sick, and ordination, include this
laying on of hands. Here, the laying on of hands invokes
the Spirit, by whose power alone our offering
Questions for Reflection and Discussion
can become the body and blood
of Christ” (Champlin, The Mystery
and Meaning of the Mass,
p. 97). This is a holy moment;
in fact, in many of the Eastern
Churches this moment of the
invocation of the Holy Spirit is
seen as the moment of consecration.
After the invocation of the
Spirit comes the institution narrative,
as the priest—praying the words of Christ as
recounted by the evangelists—tells the story of the
Last Supper. “In this elaborate act of remembering .
. . that original event becomes the event of the community
that hears it. . . . We enter into the hour of
Christ” (Driscoll, p. 71).
It is important to notice the shift in tense in the institution
narrative. The first part is in past tense, in familiar
storytelling style: “On the night he was betrayed,
he took bread and gave you thanks and
praise.” But when we come to the words Jesus spoke
on that night, we move into present tense: “This is
my body.” Why? Because we believe that Christ
truly becomes present in this moment, as present as
when he himself first broke the bread and gave the
cup. His presence becomes present to us. We acknowledge
this in the memorial acclamation sung
by all the people, when we proclaim the mystery of
our faith present among us: the death of the Lord,
his resurrected life, and our belief in his future
coming.
After holding up the bread and then the cup for all to
see, the priest genuflects and all bow in a sign of adoration.
It is a sign of the change that takes place during
this prayer. The simple signs—bread and wine—
become the Body and Blood of Christ. And so we
sing “Amen!”
• The word eucharist means “thanksgiving.” For what do I give thanks today?
• What are my gifts? Do I share my time, my money, myself, with the parish community? Or do I
feel that I don’t have anything to offer?
• How do I actively participate in the Eucharistic Prayer? What part of the prayer affects me most
while praying and listening to the Eucharistic Prayer?
Stewardship
By Ron Reso
A major error in accounting has been discovered in our
Changing Lives Together (CLT) campaign. Instead of
$3,054,000, the real number is $2,759,048. A batch consisting
of $37,000 was entered as $372,000. Hence the
error. Still, I estimate that our net will be around $2.3 million
once all the money is collected over the next 3-5
years. That will give us the opportunity to return our savings
to a healthy level and provide the school endowment
with sufficient funds so that withdrawals can begin sometime
in the next few years.
The CSA drive continues at $399,853 with 864 participants.
Total pledges are only 25% of our total registered
parishioners, 39% of parishioners that actively support St.
Hugo financially, and only 69% of those who gave last
year. It seems that some people gave to the CLT at the
expense of CSA.
It’s unfortunate that the archdiocese initiative came so
closely to the CSA drive. Had we not opted to be in the
first phase, we would now be conducting the CLT program.
Either way, running two fundraisers almost concurrently
is a challenge for everybody.
The biggest concern is the effect this may have on the
offertory collections. The first month (July) of the new
fiscal year is difficult to assess due to vacations, but
we’re running $22,942 below budget and nearly $8,000
below what we collected last year to date.
In the fall, we will be conducting a Time and Talent
Search. No, this is not a chance to go to Las Vegas with
your talent, but it does give everyone a chance to contribute
their time as well as any special talent you may have
to help St. Hugo be the superior parish that we are.
Devoting one’s time is especially important for those who
cannot support St. Hugo financially as well as they would
like. We have over 300 people currently volunteering
their time. Check out the Parish Directory on pages 17-30
for ways in which you can participate. For those who
have little time because of work or family commitments,
there are several ministries, such as ushers, sacristans,
lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers, that allow you to contribute
while attending weekend Mass.
Dear Msgr. Tocco,
July 18, 2011
Thank you for the generosity and hospitality
you and your parish showed to our missionary
speaker Father Tom Hagan this past
weekend. It is an honor for Hands Together
to witness the good work being done by the
Church in Haiti and we are grateful for the
chance to share it with the good people of St.
Hugo of the Hills Parish.
We cannot do this work alone and we know
that God gives us the strength to continue the
difficult work of building the Kingdom here
on earth. The prayers from your community
and your generous outreach fill us with the
strength and hope to continue our journey of
faith in the most challenging country of
Haiti. The good people of St. Hugo of the
Hills Parish remind us that we are all members
of one body and that together, as one
mission church, we can make Jesus’ presence
felt in this world.
Please remember us in your prayers and be
assured of our prayers as well.
Sincerely yours in Chrust,
times we all face.
We pray for our Catholic Church, our Pope,
parish, our friends and family.
During spring and summer, weather permitting,
we meet at 7pm at the statue of Mary and Elizabeth
next to the chapel, or in the chapel during
the fall and winter.
This is a beautiful and meaningful hour of
prayer.
A novena is a 9-day period of private or public
prayer to obtain special graces, to implore special
favors or to make special petitions. Novena
is derived from the Latin “novern”, meaning
nine. This novena has always had more of a
sense of urgency and neediness. For more information,
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
PRAYER GROUP
The Christian Meditation Group at St. Hugo welcomes
newcomers to our meetings every Monday at
10am in the church library. This ancient form of
Christian prayer, rooted in the gospel and St. Paul,
seeks God and stillness beyond word and thought.
Typically, a meeting includes prayer, a short taped
talk on meditation, some scripture and quiet music.
25 minutes of silent meditation is followed by questions
or informal discussion of a shared reading.
What is a Holy Hour?
An hour spent in the presence of the Holy Eucharist,
Christ himself, is called a Holy Hour. During a Holy
Hour, you can pray alone or with others before Jesus in
the Tabernacle; or you can pray in the presence of the
exposed Blessed Sacrament privately or at a public service
led by a priest or deacon.
At St. Hugo, we have a public Holy Hour for Vocations
every Wednesday at 7pm which is led by Fr. Joseph. A
Holy Hour with exposition of the Holy Eucharist is available
to us on the first Tuesday of the month. It begins
with Benediction at 7:30pm and continues with private
adoration from 8pm until Wednesday 6am.
A private Holy Hour means you are silently present to the
Lord. Even a few short moments of this silent presence is
a precious treasure, for it is in silence that the Lord speaks
to us. Silence is God’s language.
Never be anxious about what you must do during a Holy
Hour. The most important thing to realize about your time
with the Lord is that you do not have to do anything. Just
as in sun-tanning you only need to be present to the ultra
violet radiation of the Sun, so you are irradiated by
Christ’s Eucharistic presence. When you feel a desire to
pray, read or write then you simply allow yourself to do
whatever activity you feel led to.
Christ makes no demands of you. For Him, your presence
is all that matters during this hour spent with Him. “So
you could not stay awake with me even for an
hour?” (Mt. 26:40)
Retreat for Divorced and Separated –
August 12 - 14
Amid the tragic circumstances of dealing with loss
and separation are small islands of hope which give
us room to recover as we search for answers. It is a
quest that brings us through many different places
and touches every phase of our lives, including our
faith. Part of the journey requires spaces which give
us rest and assurances of unconditional lovea
peace which God wants you to know. So make a decision
to come aside and rest and experience the
peace which only God can give.
Word of Life
“The virtue of chastityis not a “no” to pleasure
that is capable of generating life and of generously
welcoming a new life which is born.”
If your parish participated in the Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) program Operation Rice Bowl back in Lent, you'll recall
that one of the weeks highlighted their work in Indonesia. Farmers
in one of the poorest provinces of the country, Flores Island,
often had a difficult time growing enough crops to feed their
families though the year. CRS helped to educate farmers about
drought-resistant crops, organic fertilizers, and other ways to
improve their harvests. While the farmers of Flores Island still
struggle, their lives are much better thanks to the actions of
CRS that educate farmers in Indonesia about new methods that
will improve crop yields. Coaxing a little more food each year
from the tired land is essential to providing for the population of
this largely non-Christian country.
The miracle of the loaves and fishes is one of the most
familiar to us, since it appears in all four Gospels. Matthew's
version follows the tradition in which the eucharistic actions of
Jesus-took, blessed, broke, gave-are presented in this miracle
story as well. In a deserted place near the Sea of Galilee all are
fed in a wondrous abundance in the same way that all are nourished
in the Eucharist we share every weekend.
The work of Catholic Relief Services in feeding the hungry
flows directly from the Eucharist we partake of at Mass. The
sacrament of Christ's body and blood nourishes us for our work
on earth to feed the hungry, free the oppressed, heal the sick,
and proclaim the good news. Without the Eucharist, our actions
would be no more than good deeds, bereft of their spiritual
benefits. But without the work of charity that flows from the
Eucharist, our Communion would be hollow, because we would
have forfeited the bond of love that unites us in Christ. Sharing
the Eucharist and our loving response in good works go hand in
hand to make us Christians.
