PUBLISHER’S NOTE 18<br />

you undoubtedly noticed <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e’s appearance when you picked up this issue. Summer is<br />

upon us! And with <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> summer solstice <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e gave birth to a whole new image;<br />

an image th<strong>at</strong> allows us to captiv<strong>at</strong>e our readers as much with a visual feast of photographic splendor<br />

as with our stories. We <strong>at</strong> <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e are very excited about wh<strong>at</strong> lies ahead and couldn’t th<strong>in</strong>k of a<br />

better time to salute <strong>the</strong> Men of <strong>the</strong> Pen<strong>in</strong>sula.<br />

you see, men are not so unlike <strong>the</strong> roar<strong>in</strong>g summer sun; deliber<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>tentions, powerful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

actions, and giv<strong>in</strong>g of light th<strong>at</strong> motiv<strong>at</strong>es and heals o<strong>the</strong>rs. The gentlemen we highlight <strong>in</strong> this issue<br />

encapsul<strong>at</strong>e wh<strong>at</strong> it truly means to be a man on our pen<strong>in</strong>sula. They are f<strong>at</strong>hers, <strong>the</strong>y are husbands, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are dreamers, and <strong>the</strong>y are activ<strong>at</strong>ors. It is <strong>the</strong>se men who have textured our Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cre<strong>at</strong>ive m<strong>in</strong>ds and enriched <strong>the</strong> area’s history with <strong>the</strong>ir actions.<br />

I am personally gr<strong>at</strong>eful for hav<strong>in</strong>g met and learned from those whose stories and photos fill our pages this issue. We had a<br />

hectic agenda yet everyone adjusted <strong>the</strong>ir busy schedules to be a part of this project.<br />

The Monterey Jet Center, home of Denny LeVett’s plane, was <strong>in</strong>credibly accommod<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g, maneuver<strong>in</strong>g his plane around for<br />

her photo shoot. We couldn’t have asked for more. Also, Terra Norse, front office manager <strong>at</strong> Highlands Inn was of gre<strong>at</strong> assistance<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> photo shoot with Jim Ockert of Khakis of Carmel.<br />

I was humbled dur<strong>in</strong>g my visit with Judge John M. Phillips and his wife, subject of our fe<strong>at</strong>ure story about Rancho Cielo.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>dividual who has devoted his life to help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong>-risk kids who want to turn <strong>the</strong>ir lives around, Phillips and his team have<br />

truly cre<strong>at</strong>ed a haven for hope to thrive.<br />

Inside this issue you will also trek through <strong>the</strong> priv<strong>at</strong>e lives of Greg Jamison, CEO of <strong>the</strong> Sharks; Ryan Pullara, a teenage<br />

Arabian horse breeder whose n<strong>at</strong>ional titles are awe-<strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g; Dennis Donohue, Mayor of Sal<strong>in</strong>as; Denny LeVett, Carmel’s<br />

vagabond host; Al Saroyan, a man whose boyhood dream came true; Jim Ockert, <strong>the</strong> man beh<strong>in</strong>d pen<strong>in</strong>sula fashion; and<br />

John Rossi, local motorcycle enthusiast. Plus, we have David Bernahl, co-founder of Pebble Beach Food and W<strong>in</strong>e, to thank<br />

for recommend<strong>in</strong>g Citronelle restaurant, a gre<strong>at</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d th<strong>at</strong> will leave you hunger<strong>in</strong>g for more.<br />

Partners <strong>in</strong> Cre<strong>at</strong>ive Crime<br />

By Black Sheep Design<br />

CREATIVE VIEW 20<br />

When <strong>the</strong> publisher of <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e, Rich Medel, approached us more than four months ago about<br />

embark<strong>in</strong>g on a partnership to recre<strong>at</strong>e <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e’s image we were <strong>at</strong> once fl<strong>at</strong>tered and thrilled.<br />

Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e’s loyal readership, we understood th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> design had to be both <strong>in</strong>telligent<br />

and vibrant to accur<strong>at</strong>ely represent <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

After conduct<strong>in</strong>g much <strong>in</strong>-depth research for <strong>the</strong> redesign, we determ<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e could best tell<br />

its stories by follow<strong>in</strong>g a non-traditional form<strong>at</strong>. Thus, a cultured coffee-table style magaz<strong>in</strong>e was born. This<br />

form<strong>at</strong> prevents <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e from blend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> with ma<strong>in</strong>stream public<strong>at</strong>ions while allow<strong>in</strong>g us to captiv<strong>at</strong>e<br />

our readers with cre<strong>at</strong>ive edge.<br />

The Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula—from <strong>the</strong> galleries and restaurants to <strong>the</strong> beaches, v<strong>in</strong>eyards, and landscape—<br />

is like one large art exhibit; <strong>in</strong>fused with mesmeriz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong>tributes th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong>spire those who live here. <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e follows <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

footsteps of <strong>the</strong> Pen<strong>in</strong>sula by offer<strong>in</strong>g more than just fun stories and pretty pictures. We designed <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e to encompass <strong>the</strong><br />

sophistic<strong>at</strong>ion and excitement of <strong>the</strong> area by implement<strong>in</strong>g a clean, artistic layout. We felt it was important to comb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>timacy<br />

of <strong>the</strong> stories with <strong>the</strong> vibrancy of <strong>the</strong> photography, cre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g a multidimensional narr<strong>at</strong>ive th<strong>at</strong> takes <strong>the</strong> reader from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> end of each story. In short, <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e is a tribute to <strong>the</strong> Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula.<br />

Every aspect of <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e was done with <strong>the</strong> most deliber<strong>at</strong>e precision. For <strong>in</strong>stance, our prolific use of white space is not only<br />

<strong>in</strong>tentional; it’s one way th<strong>at</strong> we prevent clutter<strong>in</strong>g our reader’s bra<strong>in</strong>s with a goulash of visually loquacious fillers. In fact, <strong>the</strong> new<br />

form<strong>at</strong> uses fewer photographs and text while mak<strong>in</strong>g a significant impact through stronger imagery and denser editorial content.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> project did not come without its challenges. For <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>the</strong> horizontal orient<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> book affords a dynamic<br />

experience and offers more photographic freedom; however, it also requires th<strong>at</strong> we take <strong>in</strong>to consider<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> capacity of <strong>the</strong><br />

cameras used to photograph our subjects so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> photos fit <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> unique layout. This delic<strong>at</strong>e balance of cre<strong>at</strong>ive efforts has<br />

resulted <strong>in</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> you hold <strong>in</strong> your hands now.<br />

To say th<strong>at</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g on this project with Mr. Medel and his editorial team has been a pleasure is an underst<strong>at</strong>ement. The rel<strong>at</strong>ionship<br />

th<strong>at</strong> we have developed with <strong>the</strong>m exudes an abundance of positivity. There has been a true meet<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ds between us and<br />

this issue is <strong>the</strong> first offspr<strong>in</strong>g of our collabor<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

If you ever get <strong>the</strong> chance to meet Mr. Medel, we are certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>at</strong> you will admire <strong>the</strong> same positive <strong>at</strong>titude and resourceful<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d th<strong>at</strong> motiv<strong>at</strong>ed us to embark on this adventure with him. Black Sheep Design looks forward to a long and prosperous<br />

future with <strong>65°</strong> Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. °<br />

IN-BOX 22<br />

LONG AND SUCCESSFUL RUN<br />

I just picked up my first copy of your<br />

magaz<strong>in</strong>e, came home, and read <strong>the</strong><br />

entire issue. As a professional writer<br />

and photographer who makes my home<br />

here <strong>in</strong> Monterey, I am thrilled th<strong>at</strong> this<br />

magaz<strong>in</strong>e exists and th<strong>at</strong> this issue focuses<br />

on some of <strong>the</strong> very talented women<br />

who live here. It is <strong>in</strong>deed a gre<strong>at</strong> place<br />

to live and work, and I have found my<br />

colleagues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts and bus<strong>in</strong>ess to be<br />

very supportive. I came here many years<br />

ago to study language and teach. I fell <strong>in</strong><br />

love with <strong>the</strong> area <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> time, but moved<br />

away until about two years ago. Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

returned to live here permanently, I am<br />

glad to f<strong>in</strong>d a public<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> focuses on<br />

<strong>the</strong> whole Pen<strong>in</strong>sula. I <strong>in</strong>tend to submit<br />

some proposals, and want to thank you<br />

for do<strong>in</strong>g such a gre<strong>at</strong> job with <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

2008 issue. Look<strong>in</strong>g forward to a long and<br />

successful run for your magaz<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

C<strong>at</strong>her<strong>in</strong>e Al-meten<br />

NO “COMMUNITY LEADERS”<br />

I just read <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g issue of your<br />

magaz<strong>in</strong>e and had some observ<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

First, <strong>the</strong>re are NO “community leaders”.<br />

People have supervisors <strong>at</strong> work and th<strong>at</strong>’s<br />

about it. If leadership is def<strong>in</strong>ed as gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

people to follow you, <strong>the</strong>re’s nobody <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

community I would voluntarily follow.<br />

Second, from wh<strong>at</strong> I can tell, <strong>the</strong> ladies’<br />

profiles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g 2008 magaz<strong>in</strong>e are<br />

little more than plugs for <strong>the</strong>ir various<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses. Nice, but not relevant unless<br />

you plan to do bus<strong>in</strong>ess with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Lastly, <strong>the</strong> magaz<strong>in</strong>e overall seems to<br />

be <strong>in</strong>tended for people liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Pebble<br />

Beach. We “normal” people haven’t <strong>the</strong><br />

time, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion, or <strong>the</strong> money to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dulge <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> “soirees” whose pictures<br />

grace <strong>the</strong> pages of your magaz<strong>in</strong>e. We<br />

have lives. I sometimes wonder if most of<br />

<strong>the</strong> people pictured actually exist; I have<br />

only met two or three of <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

At any r<strong>at</strong>e, th<strong>at</strong>’s wh<strong>at</strong> I th<strong>in</strong>k.<br />

Have a nice day!<br />

your friend, Otis R. Needleman<br />

Life In A Two-Wheel Fastlane<br />

The owner of Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Sports Center, John Rossi, began his<br />

motorcycle sales and service bus<strong>in</strong>ess out of a Seaside basement after tak<strong>in</strong>g over<br />

a t<strong>in</strong>y dealership th<strong>at</strong> had become a fail<strong>in</strong>g enterprise for <strong>the</strong> reason th<strong>at</strong> it lacked<br />

coherent bus<strong>in</strong>ess oper<strong>at</strong>ions and processes. The owner had been simply fly<strong>in</strong>g<br />

by <strong>the</strong> se<strong>at</strong> of his pants, sell<strong>in</strong>g bikes as a cigar shop oper<strong>at</strong>ion, and ignor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

unnecessary bus<strong>in</strong>ess frills such as account<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>ventory management.<br />

Complet<strong>in</strong>g his baccalaure<strong>at</strong>e degree <strong>in</strong><br />

Economics from <strong>the</strong> University of Colorado, John<br />

was look<strong>in</strong>g to put <strong>in</strong>to practice all <strong>the</strong> lessons th<strong>at</strong><br />

he had learned from his course studies.<br />

Meanwhile, John’s dad was <strong>in</strong> a period of transition,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g sold a profitable bus<strong>in</strong>ess and gone<br />

<strong>in</strong>to retirement. However, Dad was not <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

person to get hooked on Daytime TV or shuffleboard.<br />

He was seek<strong>in</strong>g new worlds to conquer.<br />

GETTING DOwN TO BUSINESS<br />

Nei<strong>the</strong>r man were knowledgeable about sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

motorcycles when <strong>the</strong>y began sell<strong>in</strong>g yamaha and<br />

Suzuki motorcycles — <strong>the</strong> two product l<strong>in</strong>es th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al owner had been sell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

John discovered th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> general dishevelment<br />

of <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion made <strong>the</strong> challenge gre<strong>at</strong>er than<br />

he expected. He felt like someone who had been<br />

thrown <strong>in</strong>to a strange room with <strong>the</strong> lights, only<br />

discover<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs by stumbl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Fortun<strong>at</strong>ely, John wasn’t forced to learn everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this way. The s<strong>in</strong>gle most important decision<br />

he made was becom<strong>in</strong>g part of <strong>the</strong> Retail Powersports<br />

Management Group where people with a<br />

wealth of <strong>in</strong>dustry experience began to guide and<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>e him about such th<strong>in</strong>gs as quality guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />

and standards.<br />

Retail Powersports Management Group only<br />

permits top performers to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group —<br />

dealers who <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y will make a contribution<br />

to <strong>the</strong> project. Limited to 20 members, <strong>the</strong><br />

group represents various size dealerships across<br />

<strong>the</strong> country. The network is a true example of<br />

symbiosis because everyone supports one ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with advice, warn<strong>in</strong>gs, and helpful market<strong>in</strong>g ideas.<br />

Every month <strong>the</strong> members submit f<strong>in</strong>ancials to one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r and meet quarterly via conference call to<br />

share new ideas and <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion about <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

trends. Each member submits a brand new idea<br />

and John <strong>the</strong>n cre<strong>at</strong>es an implement<strong>at</strong>ion list of<br />

ideas to <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to his bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

For example, John’s service department has<br />

four technicians, all with vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees of<br />

knowledge and experience. One idea was to<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e a lane called Gravy Work — repairs th<strong>at</strong><br />

can be done easily.<br />

Repairs are less efficient if you mix gravy with heavy<br />

work. Assign<strong>in</strong>g different people to each technical<br />

level of service cre<strong>at</strong>es a much smoo<strong>the</strong>r flow of<br />

repairs. The Gravy Work Lane results <strong>in</strong> quicker<br />

turn-around because a leak<strong>in</strong>g gas cap can’t get<br />

backed up beh<strong>in</strong>d a transmission overhaul th<strong>at</strong><br />

might take three days.<br />

John and his f<strong>at</strong>her diagnosed <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

structure and learned th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> motorcycle <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

has four profit centers <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Sales, Parts &<br />

Accessories, Service, and F<strong>in</strong>ance and Insurance.<br />

They dissected each department, spend<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

than two years br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g each department up to<br />

high quality and efficiency standards.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess f<strong>in</strong>ally reached a stable oper<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong>y still weren’t mak<strong>in</strong>g wheelbarrows<br />

full of money, but <strong>the</strong>y weren’t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> red anymore.<br />

One way to get on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side track for area motorcycle<br />

sales is by <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g diversity. The Rossis<br />

formed a rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with an Italian company<br />

called Aprilia, and received phenomenal sales<br />

action out of <strong>the</strong>ir products.<br />

They purchased a second local underperform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dealership and overnight found <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess of sell<strong>in</strong>g and servic<strong>in</strong>g Duc<strong>at</strong>i, Honda,<br />

and Kawasaki motorcycles. Able to apply <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess model to <strong>the</strong> new company’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

challenges, <strong>the</strong> acquisition presented <strong>the</strong>m with<br />

opportunities for synergy. They hired nearly all<br />

of <strong>the</strong> employees th<strong>at</strong> had worked <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

purchased company and moved both bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle loc<strong>at</strong>ion, merg<strong>in</strong>g departments,<br />

and achiev<strong>in</strong>g economies of scale. To John’s<br />

knowledge, <strong>the</strong>y now carry more products and<br />

product l<strong>in</strong>es than any o<strong>the</strong>r dealership.<br />

SELLING AN EXPERIENCE<br />

The competitive <strong>in</strong>dustry of motorcycle sales is<br />

steeped with game <strong>the</strong>ory. Success requires both<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g good str<strong>at</strong>egies and tactics.<br />

The G<strong>at</strong>es of<br />

Opportunity<br />

For troubled juveniles <strong>in</strong> Monterey County, <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h to hope runs through Sal<strong>in</strong>as.<br />

It goes out N<strong>at</strong>ividad Road past <strong>the</strong> county jail, <strong>the</strong> sheriff’s and prob<strong>at</strong>ion offices<br />

and across remote farmland to Old N<strong>at</strong>ividad Road. A right turn <strong>the</strong>re leads<br />

to Old Stage Road and <strong>the</strong> entrance to a 100-acre ranch nestled alongside <strong>the</strong><br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g San Gabriel Mounta<strong>in</strong>s. The land is open and vast, a peaceful place th<strong>at</strong><br />

was one of <strong>the</strong> first areas to be settled by early residents of <strong>the</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>as Valley. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> long driveway, a clean, simple campus sits on high ground. There<br />

are horse stables on your left, and a sign on <strong>the</strong> right-hand side reads, “You have<br />

just passed through <strong>the</strong> g<strong>at</strong>es of opportunity. Welcome to Rancho Cielo.”<br />

By <strong>the</strong> time a teenage boy or girl gets here most have been <strong>in</strong> trouble,<br />

gone to court and been identified as an <strong>at</strong>-risk youth. They have probably met<br />

Joe Gramm<strong>at</strong>ico, <strong>the</strong> Prob<strong>at</strong>ion Department officer who works on-site and<br />

supervises 18 prob<strong>at</strong>ion staff members. The teen goes through an <strong>in</strong>tense screen-<br />

John Phillips hoists a workboot-clad leg onto his desk and faces you with <strong>the</strong> frank, open stare of a man<br />

always look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> truth. He can’t help it: th<strong>at</strong> stare served him well dur<strong>in</strong>g his career as a Superior<br />

Court judge. Newcomers to <strong>the</strong> ranch take one look <strong>at</strong> him and know <strong>the</strong>re’s no “wiggle room” with this<br />

man. It’s total honesty or noth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

It’s also <strong>the</strong> look of a visionary. John saw <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>in</strong> this land long ago. Over <strong>the</strong> past eight years,<br />

his dream has become reality.<br />

CD Wh<strong>at</strong> drove you to build this place?<br />

JP I got tired of send<strong>in</strong>g young people to<br />

prison for thirty, forty, fifty years. I mean, you’re<br />

basically discard<strong>in</strong>g a life. I saw an obvious need<br />

for early <strong>in</strong>tervention with th<strong>in</strong>gs like job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

CD How did you f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> land?<br />

JP I knew this property existed. It was <strong>the</strong> old<br />

Boys’ Ranch. I used to come here and play basketball<br />

with <strong>the</strong> kids when I was a district <strong>at</strong>torney<br />

back <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1970’s. After th<strong>at</strong>, <strong>the</strong> property was<br />

pretty much abandoned and lay here dormant for<br />

about twenty years, except for some use by <strong>the</strong><br />

county for dump<strong>in</strong>g and Animal Control. I always<br />

thought it had all k<strong>in</strong>ds of potential as a place of<br />

hope for young people.<br />

CD How did th<strong>in</strong>gs look when you started build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Rancho Cielo?<br />

JP We took over <strong>the</strong> property <strong>in</strong> 2000. We<br />

couldn’t raise sufficient fund<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>n to get<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g go<strong>in</strong>g here. So we started <strong>the</strong> Silver Star<br />

program with <strong>the</strong> County Educ<strong>at</strong>ion and Prob<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

departments down <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> old N<strong>at</strong>ividad Hospital.<br />

We couldn’t do anyth<strong>in</strong>g with this property until<br />

<strong>the</strong> construction <strong>in</strong>dustry got beh<strong>in</strong>d me. John<br />

Anderson of Woodman Development and Don<br />

Chap<strong>in</strong> were major contributors who brought <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir connections.<br />

We really started work<strong>in</strong>g on th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> 2003. We<br />

hauled off over 750 end-dumps of trash and tore<br />

down old dilapid<strong>at</strong>ed houses, carports and fences.<br />

When we moved <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> facility <strong>in</strong> 2004, <strong>the</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion and educ<strong>at</strong>ional build<strong>in</strong>gs had been<br />

completed but <strong>the</strong> gym was still <strong>in</strong> disrepair.<br />

CD Now <strong>the</strong> gym is f<strong>in</strong>ished and it looks gre<strong>at</strong>.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong>’s next?<br />

JP We’ve cleaned up <strong>the</strong> kitchen and it’s ready<br />

to be revamped <strong>in</strong>to a cul<strong>in</strong>ary school. I need to<br />

raise more money for th<strong>at</strong> project. We’ll have to<br />

make handicap-access b<strong>at</strong>hrooms and br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

all new kitchen equipment. The plans have been<br />

completed and <strong>the</strong>y’re <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> county now. The<br />

architect who designed it don<strong>at</strong>ed all his time.<br />

A mechanical eng<strong>in</strong>eer also don<strong>at</strong>ed his time.<br />

Bert Cut<strong>in</strong>o from <strong>the</strong> Sard<strong>in</strong>e Factory is head<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

committee to decide wh<strong>at</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of programs we’ll<br />

run <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cul<strong>in</strong>ary school.<br />

CD So far, wh<strong>at</strong> was <strong>the</strong> hardest th<strong>in</strong>g to get done<br />

and why?<br />

JP The hardest part was gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs done. People were very reluctant to get<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> this project because my own feasibility<br />

study—which I paid for—concluded we could<br />

never do it. So Don Chap<strong>in</strong> and I came up with a<br />

str<strong>at</strong>egy to do wh<strong>at</strong> we had to do <strong>in</strong> order to get<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs f<strong>in</strong>ished enough th<strong>at</strong> we could br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> kids <strong>in</strong>.<br />

Now <strong>the</strong> county adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion is totally supportive<br />

of wh<strong>at</strong> we’re do<strong>in</strong>g. Also <strong>the</strong> Harden Found<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Found<strong>at</strong>ion has given us<br />

more money to keep go<strong>in</strong>g. For every buck we<br />

FEATURE 37

FEATURE 38<br />

get, we try to stretch it <strong>in</strong>to three with labor and<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials th<strong>at</strong> are don<strong>at</strong>ed. It’s become easier as<br />

people have seen our successes.<br />

CD you’ve mentioned people who have helped you.<br />

Any o<strong>the</strong>rs come to m<strong>in</strong>d?<br />

JP There’s been a multitude of people here. Just<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion build<strong>in</strong>g: C<strong>in</strong>derella<br />

Carpets don<strong>at</strong>ed all <strong>the</strong> carpet<strong>in</strong>g along with<br />

<strong>in</strong>stall<strong>at</strong>ion, and Pete Scudder of Scudder Roof<strong>in</strong>g<br />

don<strong>at</strong>ed all <strong>the</strong> roof<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>at</strong>erial and labor. The<br />

Associ<strong>at</strong>ion of General Contractors has been very<br />

helpful. The Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Found<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

<strong>the</strong> AT&T people were <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> rebuild<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> gymnasium. AT&T gave us a $100,000<br />

m<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g grant for th<strong>at</strong>. The construction <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

has been phenomenally supportive.<br />

CD How do <strong>the</strong> horses fit <strong>in</strong> with all this?<br />

JP Horse programs have been used <strong>in</strong> prisons<br />

and juvenile facilities. We have about twelve head<br />

of horses and <strong>the</strong> program is expand<strong>in</strong>g. We call<br />

it “Gaits of Hope.” It teaches <strong>the</strong> young people<br />

boundaries. Certa<strong>in</strong> kids go down and take<br />

classes <strong>the</strong>re. They learn to deal with <strong>the</strong> horses<br />

and learn a lot from <strong>the</strong>m. Some of <strong>the</strong>m adopt a<br />

particular horse. It’s very beneficial.<br />

CD Wh<strong>at</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r programs do you have go<strong>in</strong>g on?<br />

JP We have health educ<strong>at</strong>ion and an aggressive<br />

<strong>the</strong>rapy program with social workers on site. We<br />

have a music program and an art program. We<br />

have First Aid classes. We’re start<strong>in</strong>g a drama<br />

class as well as a journalism class, plus a robotics<br />

program and a wood shop. We’re go<strong>in</strong>g to have<br />

an auto body shop <strong>in</strong> our voc<strong>at</strong>ional school when<br />

it gets done. Lyceum has partnered with us to do<br />

some supplemental classes.<br />

CD How is Rancho Cielo<br />

different from a group<br />

home?<br />

JP It’s an entirely different<br />

concept. For one th<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

kids don’t live here—which<br />

is sometimes unfortun<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

Some go home to an<br />

environment th<strong>at</strong>’s not as<br />

healthy as we would like. But<br />

we keep <strong>the</strong>ir days pretty<br />

full. We have a teacher’s<br />

aide <strong>in</strong> every class, so it’s<br />

a very <strong>in</strong>tense educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

program. We do drug tests<br />

three times a week. We have<br />

a gang <strong>in</strong>tervention program<br />

and alcohol counsel<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>the</strong>se kids<br />

to good th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> life<br />

<strong>the</strong>y haven’t seen before.<br />

Each year, we go to <strong>the</strong><br />

Aquarium. Whale w<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g. We took <strong>the</strong>m to a<br />

Giants game. After gradu<strong>at</strong>ion, we take <strong>the</strong>m to a<br />

nice restaurant. A lot of <strong>the</strong>m haven’t ever been to<br />

a nice restaurant <strong>in</strong> Monterey. We work <strong>the</strong> Quail<br />

Lodge car rally every year as a design<strong>at</strong>ed charity.<br />

Last year, we brought <strong>in</strong> over $10,000. I put some<br />

of th<strong>at</strong> money back <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kids’ Student Council<br />

account so <strong>the</strong>y could decide wh<strong>at</strong> to do with it.<br />

CD Do you <strong>in</strong>teract with local law enforcement?<br />

JP Prob<strong>at</strong>ion is <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stay. They provide all <strong>the</strong><br />

transport<strong>at</strong>ion and supervision. We have some<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r law enforcement people <strong>in</strong>volved, but very<br />

few. Th<strong>at</strong>’s an area we will probably explore with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>as P.A.L. program and with <strong>the</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>as<br />

Police Department.<br />

Frankly, I would like to get more officers up here<br />

to work with <strong>the</strong> kids as volunteers and mentors.<br />

It’s good for young people to learn to deal with<br />

law enforcement <strong>in</strong> ways o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> time<br />

<strong>the</strong>y’re gett<strong>in</strong>g arrested or up aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> side<br />

of <strong>the</strong> car. If <strong>the</strong>y get to know cops and deal with<br />

cops on a personal level, it’s beneficial to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

and <strong>the</strong> officers.<br />

CD There’s a new road near <strong>the</strong> park<strong>in</strong>g lot. Where<br />

does it go?<br />

JP We’re f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g up a restor<strong>at</strong>ion of two small<br />

lakes. We brought <strong>in</strong> base rock th<strong>at</strong> was don<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Chemical Lime Company, put roads <strong>in</strong>,<br />

Carmel’s Vagabond Host<br />

As I sit <strong>in</strong> Cypress Inn await<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> arrival of owner Denny LeVett, I notice a grand look<strong>in</strong>g gentleman briskly<br />

ascend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hill. With<strong>in</strong> seconds <strong>the</strong> impeccably <strong>at</strong>tired package of relaxed power is <strong>in</strong>side, greet<strong>in</strong>g me with <strong>the</strong> familiar<br />

disarmament of a seasoned human rel<strong>at</strong>ions pro. LeVett shared stories <strong>at</strong> a cozy table <strong>in</strong>side Terry’s Moroccan Bar,<br />

Cypress Inn’s popular w<strong>at</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g hole, named after his longtime friend and partner, Terry Melcher, whose fondness for all<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs Moroccan came while spend<strong>in</strong>g a year <strong>the</strong>re as a boy while his mo<strong>the</strong>r, Doris Day, was film<strong>in</strong>g “The Man Who Knew<br />

Too Much.” Here is a small taste of one of one of Carmel’s most flavorful characters.<br />

BY RAYMOND NAPOLITANO PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG HARRIS<br />

PERSONA 45<br />

Self–proclaimed lover of all<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs exotic, LeVett stands<br />

with two of his favorite toys.

”I was awarded worst of show <strong>in</strong> two of [<strong>the</strong> Concours events].”<br />

“My f<strong>at</strong>her died when I was about 13 or 14.<br />

My mo<strong>the</strong>r, a teacher <strong>in</strong> Owasa, Iowa, moved to<br />

California with my bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> tow, and tripled her<br />

$4,200 dollars a year salary. I stayed beh<strong>in</strong>d with<br />

my grandf<strong>at</strong>her for a few years until my mom<br />

suggested I <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>the</strong> University of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> most beautiful college I’ve ever seen.”<br />

While <strong>at</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong>, Denny signed up for a real<br />

est<strong>at</strong>e program taught by a Professor<br />

Brombaugh: “He made me a deal: If I got my<br />

real est<strong>at</strong>e license, he’d give me a top grade. He<br />

said Palo Alto would be <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>est place for<br />

real est<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> California history. It was, ‘Thank you<br />

<strong>Pacific</strong> U, hello Palo Alto.’ I just couldn’t wait to<br />

buy build<strong>in</strong>gs and really got <strong>in</strong>to th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> downtown<br />

Palo Alto.”<br />

This dapper gentleman will travel anywhere <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong>y have an old grand hotel. “When<br />

you grow up <strong>in</strong> Iowa and all you have is Post, Life<br />

and Holiday Magaz<strong>in</strong>e you look <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>se grand<br />

hotels and say, ‘ahh, someday.’ The Benbow Inn<br />

<strong>in</strong> Garberville, about an hour south of Eureka, was<br />

just <strong>the</strong> most romantic beautiful hotel. Owner Art<br />

Stadler and I became gre<strong>at</strong> friends. When he had<br />

a heart <strong>at</strong>tack he told me, ‘Den, you’re buy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Benbow Inn, you’re <strong>the</strong> only one th<strong>at</strong> loves it<br />

<strong>the</strong> way I do.’ I commuted back and forth <strong>in</strong> little<br />

r<strong>in</strong>ky-d<strong>in</strong>k planes with p<strong>at</strong>ches on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs—I’d<br />

be forced down here and <strong>the</strong>re—<strong>the</strong>re were four<br />

different we<strong>at</strong>her p<strong>at</strong>terns between Palo Alto<br />

and Garberville.”<br />

LeVett always dreamed of <strong>the</strong> Fly<strong>in</strong>g Le<strong>at</strong>hernecks:<br />

“I love fly<strong>in</strong>g. I’ve flown s<strong>in</strong>ce I was 22 or 23.<br />

All I wanted to do was be an adventurer. I’ve got<br />

stories—like fly<strong>in</strong>g a broken down Cessna <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Mexico, but l<strong>at</strong>ely, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>struments are so much<br />

more sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed and you have to be pretty<br />

careful where you fly, so I started hir<strong>in</strong>g a pilot.”<br />

Opportunity often serendipitously redirected LeVett’s<br />

life: “Chuck W<strong>at</strong>ts owned Vagabond House and<br />

loved <strong>the</strong> Benbow Inn. He said, ‘LeVett, sell it to me,’<br />

so I took Vagabond’s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> down payment. Hence, I<br />

moved from Palo Alto to Carmel.”<br />

He has also exhibited <strong>in</strong> a few Concours where as he<br />

jok<strong>in</strong>gly put it: “I was awarded worst of show <strong>in</strong> two<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m,” LeVett is a self–proclaimed, “car lover, a<br />

collector, anyth<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong>’s exotic, fun, sporty, 1950’s,<br />

40’s too.” He’s also an antique arms collector: “I did<br />

a book on <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al Colt P<strong>at</strong>ersons. S<strong>in</strong>ce I was<br />

a little tot I’d buy toy soldiers, mostly British so <strong>at</strong><br />

Vagabond’s House we just started display<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> office, along with some of <strong>the</strong> antique firearms<br />

and a few tra<strong>in</strong>s.”<br />

Denny’s love of Carmel radi<strong>at</strong>es a warm<strong>in</strong>g glow.<br />

He realizes th<strong>at</strong>, “we have to fight a little harder<br />

for our share of tourism. This town is still every bit<br />

as gorgeous, as enchant<strong>in</strong>g as it ever was. It’s so<br />

important th<strong>at</strong> we have <strong>the</strong> best stores <strong>in</strong> Carmel,<br />

<strong>in</strong> my humble op<strong>in</strong>ion. you need to have Gucci,<br />

Armani as well as <strong>the</strong> heavenly, delightful one-ofa-k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

stores. We should have always done an art<br />

week, like Santa Fe does. How can <strong>the</strong>y get away<br />

with it and Carmel doesn’t have one?” Th<strong>at</strong>’s a<br />

grand idea <strong>in</strong>deed Denny LeVett. °<br />

If you decide to enjoy a night out <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> recently opened<br />

Citronelle by Michel Richard <strong>at</strong> Carmel Valley Ranch and<br />

you don’t f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> food to be fun to e<strong>at</strong>, Anthony Keene<br />

wants to know about it.<br />

Keene, <strong>the</strong> Executive Chef <strong>at</strong> Citronelle, describes his philosophy<br />

of cook<strong>in</strong>g as “anchored <strong>in</strong> playfulness” designed<br />

to cre<strong>at</strong>e “fun and excitement” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>er. Based on my<br />

first experience <strong>at</strong> this outstand<strong>in</strong>g addition to a worldclass<br />

restaurant scene on <strong>the</strong> Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula, I’d say<br />

Keene succeeds magnificently.<br />

Citronelle was <strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ion’s most famous<br />

There, world-famous chef, Michel Richard, has dazzled an<br />

Ranch. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> ranch’s general manager, Joseph<br />

Violi, <strong>the</strong> associ<strong>at</strong>ion between Richard and Carmel Valley<br />

Ranch’s management company, LXR Luxury Resorts, has<br />

already paid gre<strong>at</strong> dividends.<br />

The upscale restaurant opened its doors <strong>in</strong> February as a<br />

key piece <strong>in</strong> a $12 million renov<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> ranch resort has<br />

undergone over <strong>the</strong> past three years, all of it under Violi’s<br />

direction. It is one of several fruits of a str<strong>at</strong>egic alliance<br />

between <strong>the</strong> resort’s owners and Chef Richard, who owns<br />

two famous D.C. e<strong>at</strong>eries, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Central Michel<br />

Richard, a bistro-style e<strong>at</strong>ery.<br />

Keene says he first met Richard about 18 months ago<br />

while plann<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> local loc<strong>at</strong>ion moved <strong>in</strong>to high gear.<br />

“He’s a really fun person and a highly <strong>in</strong>nov<strong>at</strong>ive chef,”<br />

Keene says, “but he’s also very serious about wh<strong>at</strong> he<br />

does.” Richard’s <strong>in</strong>fluence on <strong>the</strong> menu is somewh<strong>at</strong><br />

hands-on. He and Keene talk over new ideas and

<strong>in</strong>nov<strong>at</strong>ive approaches to cook<strong>in</strong>g regularly. “We<br />

collabor<strong>at</strong>e back and forth a gre<strong>at</strong> deal,” Keene says.<br />

“I’m quite fortun<strong>at</strong>e to be associ<strong>at</strong>ed with a man of his<br />

expertise and wisdom.”<br />

As you enter <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> lodge <strong>at</strong> Carmel Valley Ranch and<br />

stroll past <strong>the</strong> lobby area, you encounter Citronelle <strong>in</strong> a<br />

series of pieces tied toge<strong>the</strong>r by décor. After you move<br />

through <strong>the</strong> 35-se<strong>at</strong> lounge area, you f<strong>in</strong>d yourself pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> 17-se<strong>at</strong> bar before angl<strong>in</strong>g past a 12-se<strong>at</strong> chef’s table<br />

and pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> light and airy 54-se<strong>at</strong> d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g room.<br />

There is also a priv<strong>at</strong>e d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g room which se<strong>at</strong>s up to 24.<br />

CHASING SEASONS, FOLLOwING TRENDS<br />

Like most professional chefs, Keene says his primary<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> his profession is <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ivity it allows him to<br />

express. “Th<strong>at</strong> and I really like <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stant gr<strong>at</strong>ific<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> results of my cre<strong>at</strong>ivity every day,” he says with<br />

a wry chuckle.<br />

Part of <strong>the</strong> fun for him <strong>at</strong> Citronelle is wh<strong>at</strong> he calls<br />

“chas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seasons” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lush Nor<strong>the</strong>rn California<br />

countryside. “In <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g, you get to th<strong>in</strong>k about new<br />

ways to <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>e morels, asparagus, fresh peas, and<br />

peaches, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> menu. Then comes summer and you<br />

turn your <strong>at</strong>tention to tom<strong>at</strong>oes and melons. In <strong>the</strong> fall,<br />

you focus on th<strong>in</strong>gs like apples and mushrooms. It’s just a<br />

never-end<strong>in</strong>g range of variety of choices.”<br />

Keene also tries to keep abreast of trends <strong>in</strong> his profession,<br />

particularly when it comes to different cook<strong>in</strong>g<br />

techniques. “We are evolv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a whole new way of<br />

A fresh approach: Ockert<br />

merges fashion with<br />

philanthropy.<br />

Clo<strong>the</strong>s, and Much More,<br />

Have Made This Man<br />

When you hear <strong>the</strong> word “fashion,” images of willowy models strutt<strong>in</strong>g down runways draped <strong>in</strong><br />

women’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g comes to m<strong>in</strong>d, but <strong>in</strong> reality, <strong>the</strong>re’s also a sector of high end, impeccable cloth<strong>in</strong>g styles<br />

th<strong>at</strong> are also available to men. Enter J. Lawrence Khaki’s Men’s Clothier of Carmel.<br />

BY JULIE ENGELHARDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG HARRIS

“I had a dream of a better men’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g store and<br />

a newer, fresher approach to men’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g,”<br />

For <strong>the</strong> past sixteen years this exquisite men’s<br />

store has been an anchor <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Barnyard<br />

Shopp<strong>in</strong>g Village, offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir loyal customers<br />

American luxury brands as well as top brands from<br />

Italy and Europe. Khaki’s has only had one owner<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g its existence, entrepreneur and visionary,<br />

Jim Ockert, who works side-by-side oversee<strong>in</strong>g<br />

every detail of <strong>the</strong> store’s oper<strong>at</strong>ion with his wife,<br />

Connie.<br />

It’s not surpris<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> Ockert has done so well with<br />

his own cloth<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess for nearly two decades.<br />

Retail is ‘<strong>in</strong> his blood,’ so-to-speak. His parents<br />

owned <strong>the</strong>ir own store while he was grow<strong>in</strong>g up,<br />

so he was around <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>at</strong> a very early<br />

age. Ockert’s career p<strong>at</strong>h has <strong>in</strong>cluded perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a professional drummer <strong>in</strong> a rock band and<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> timber mills, but he eventually <strong>in</strong>vested<br />

his time and talents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess. He<br />

honed his skills and ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>valuable knowledge<br />

while work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fashion denim bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>at</strong><br />

JCPenney and for Nordstrom. Ockert said th<strong>at</strong><br />

while work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> Nordstrom <strong>the</strong> idea of ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

a career <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry really ‘clicked.’<br />

“I had a dream of a better men’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g store<br />

and a newer, fresher approach to men’s cloth<strong>in</strong>g,”<br />

Ockert said.<br />

Ockert says th<strong>at</strong> Khaki’s was a success from <strong>the</strong><br />

start, and <strong>the</strong>re’s def<strong>in</strong>itely no sign of its popularity<br />

ever wan<strong>in</strong>g. Khaki’s has been honored as one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> 100 Best Men’s Cloth<strong>in</strong>g Stores <strong>in</strong> America,<br />

and by MR Magaz<strong>in</strong>e as one of <strong>the</strong> top 25 men’s<br />

cloth<strong>in</strong>g stores. But besides be<strong>in</strong>g a savvy bus<strong>in</strong>essman,<br />

Ockert also has a generous, charitable<br />

side as well, and has done wh<strong>at</strong> he can to help<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs throughout <strong>the</strong> years, both personally and<br />

professionally.<br />

Ockert has two grown children, Nick and Amy, who<br />

are do<strong>in</strong>g very well <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own respect. Ockert<br />

dearly believed <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> family home an<br />

open haven for anyone who wanted to visit. Many<br />

of <strong>the</strong> young men who’d come to <strong>the</strong> house were<br />

kids who played sports with Nick.<br />

“There were always guys <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> house; it was a<br />

revolv<strong>in</strong>g door,” Ockert expla<strong>in</strong>ed. “Some of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

stayed <strong>the</strong>re for awhile.”<br />

He always took <strong>the</strong> time to spend with his son’s<br />

friends, especially when <strong>the</strong>y were encounter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

difficult situ<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Ockert said th<strong>at</strong> if<br />

he weren’t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess he would love<br />

to be a coach, but admits he doesn’t have <strong>the</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. “My version of th<strong>at</strong> is, I do wh<strong>at</strong> I do,<br />

and people come my way,” he expla<strong>in</strong>ed. A part<br />

of his benevolence comes from witness<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

parents giv<strong>in</strong>g to friends and <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y never expected anyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> return,<br />

and nei<strong>the</strong>r does he.<br />

Several years ago Ockert expanded his philanthropic<br />

efforts and decided he wanted to do<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> would benefit both <strong>the</strong> Juvenile<br />

Diabetes Research Associ<strong>at</strong>ion as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

Carmel Valley youth Center. Th<strong>at</strong> was just <strong>the</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> highly successful Khaki’s Ferrari<br />

fundrais<strong>in</strong>g event which is held dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same<br />

week as <strong>the</strong> Concours d’Elegance. All proceeds go<br />

directly to <strong>the</strong> two charities; about 80 percent to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Juvenile Diabetes Research Associ<strong>at</strong>ion and 20<br />

percent to <strong>the</strong> Carmel Valley youth Center.<br />

“We want to raise as much money as we can,”<br />

he said. “The <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g is we’re a store, a<br />

cloth<strong>in</strong>g store, and <strong>the</strong>re’s no cloth<strong>in</strong>g store <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

United St<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> tries to do this. We do it and<br />

we tie it to a cause. Anyth<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> comes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

event goes directly to those two causes.” °<br />

The Man Beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Mayor<br />

While <strong>in</strong>advertently learn<strong>in</strong>g to be comfortable as a leader of baseball and basketball varsity teams, or <strong>in</strong> his role as<br />

Valedictorian of his class <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of San Francisco, becom<strong>in</strong>g a politician never occurred to <strong>the</strong> charm<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

energetic Dennis Donohue, Mayor of Sal<strong>in</strong>as.<br />

BY BARBRA ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINE MURO PERSONA 59

PERSONA 60<br />

He saw himself more as <strong>the</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> of a high-tech<br />

company. Or, while obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an advanced degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> Religious Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, perhaps as <strong>the</strong> spiritual<br />

head of a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive, metropolitan parish.<br />

It’s equally unlikely th<strong>at</strong> he pictured himself<br />

married to <strong>the</strong> proverbial farmer’s daughter, us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his sales talents <strong>in</strong> a variety of agricultural bus<strong>in</strong>esses.<br />

But, alas he and his wife, Paula, a teacher<br />

<strong>at</strong> Harden Middle School, celebr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir 25th<br />

anniversary on June 11th of this year.<br />

Their daughter Emily, who <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> moment works<br />

<strong>in</strong> produce, loves to travel, has <strong>taken</strong> a semester<br />

of courses <strong>at</strong> Oxford, and is plann<strong>in</strong>g to study <strong>in</strong><br />

India. Meanwhile, <strong>the</strong>ir son Allan is now headed for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Navy and will beg<strong>in</strong> his military career study<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Defense Language Institute, after earn<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion earlier this June.<br />

Consider<strong>in</strong>g his lack of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> produce<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry and his vacill<strong>at</strong>ion over whe<strong>the</strong>r or not<br />

to become a priest, Donohue’s decision to marry<br />

and raise a family won <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner b<strong>at</strong>tle ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

due to <strong>the</strong> “<strong>in</strong>delible mark Sal<strong>in</strong>as had made<br />

on his soul” dur<strong>in</strong>g his form<strong>at</strong>ive years. Though<br />

he cont<strong>in</strong>ues to appreci<strong>at</strong>e and enjoy his faith<br />

because he sees it as one of <strong>the</strong> “key elements<br />

to who he is,” somewhere dur<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> process<br />

he also came to understand th<strong>at</strong> “perhaps faith<br />

doesn’t make any sense unless you can live it out<br />

through your daily rout<strong>in</strong>e.”<br />

Donohue credits his wife with hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

“p<strong>at</strong>ience of Job” by allow<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>the</strong> freedom<br />

to pursue his various career <strong>in</strong>terests more or<br />

less <strong>at</strong> will. Th<strong>at</strong> meant he wasn’t home much —<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g he says he would never have done if<br />

“home and children would have suffered by his<br />

many absences.” It also meant th<strong>at</strong> he was able to<br />

conduct his bus<strong>in</strong>ess efforts globally, mak<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

a two-million-mile American Airl<strong>in</strong>e flyer.<br />

It seems th<strong>at</strong> Donohue has been work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong><br />

betterment of Sal<strong>in</strong>as s<strong>in</strong>ce he took <strong>the</strong> helm <strong>at</strong><br />

European Vegetable Specialties. The <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

part is th<strong>at</strong> he did it right. Not by protest or<br />

opposition but r<strong>at</strong>her, through a system<strong>at</strong>ic rise <strong>in</strong><br />

public visibility through his efforts on everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from volunteer<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee for<br />

Rally Sal<strong>in</strong>as, to his political appo<strong>in</strong>tment, and work<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Plann<strong>in</strong>g Commission; as well as particip<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a Director on a veritable plethora of Civic<br />

Boards. Th<strong>at</strong> said, he does have a penchant for<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> top <strong>in</strong> all of his endeavors; once he set<br />

foot <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> political arena it made perfect sense<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he would eventually arrive <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> p<strong>in</strong>nacle<br />

position of his chosen city.<br />

Sal<strong>in</strong>as has many challenges for its newest Mayor<br />

but he’s up to it and well prepared. Speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

third annual faith luncheon he told <strong>the</strong> audience<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he likened <strong>the</strong> city to <strong>the</strong> story of David and<br />

Goli<strong>at</strong>h, which, <strong>in</strong> this case, means a collection of<br />

gang-rel<strong>at</strong>ed social difficulties. Additionally <strong>the</strong><br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g city is faced with upgrades and changes<br />

unlike any th<strong>at</strong> were faced by previous leaders.<br />

Donohue’s vision is <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> title of his<br />

weekly radio broadcast “Imag<strong>in</strong>e a Gre<strong>at</strong> City.”<br />

He is amaz<strong>in</strong>gly approachable to constituents as<br />

long as <strong>the</strong>y are will<strong>in</strong>g to talk through wh<strong>at</strong>ever<br />

problem occupies <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds. If <strong>the</strong>y’re will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

discuss a challenge, it can be solved. When asked<br />

recently if he wants to go to <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e legisl<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

after be<strong>in</strong>g a Mayor, his answer clearly exemplifies<br />

his work<strong>in</strong>g style and enthusiasm for his<br />

current job: “Why should I take a demotion?” °<br />

At Home with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sharks<br />

If you ask Greg Jamison where he’s from, <strong>the</strong> answer changes daily.<br />

Today it’s Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, tomorrow Oregon. Next week he might say Colorado.<br />

Th<strong>at</strong>’s because Jamison moved constantly as a child, <strong>at</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g a total of<br />

thirteen public schools before he gradu<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />

BY KRISTIN A. SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUSSELL BYRNE

PERSONA 68<br />

“I don’t advise th<strong>at</strong> for everyone,” says Jamison,<br />

“but I learned a lot from <strong>the</strong> experience. I learned<br />

th<strong>at</strong> wherever I am, th<strong>at</strong>’s my home.”<br />

As an adult, Jamison has found his home <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> classroom, <strong>the</strong> NBA, and now <strong>the</strong> NHL, where<br />

he serves as CEO and President of <strong>the</strong> San<br />

Jose Sharks.<br />

Before enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world of professional <strong>at</strong>hletics,<br />

Jamison was an elementary school teacher. In<br />

his first year, he taught <strong>the</strong> fifth grade class th<strong>at</strong><br />

nobody wanted — <strong>the</strong>y were disruptive, challeng-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g, and achiev<strong>in</strong>g below grade-level. He says th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>re was “no teach<strong>in</strong>g until March. There was just<br />

survival.” But slowly he transformed <strong>the</strong> class. “We<br />

came a long way. I taught <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>y taught<br />

me,” he says, while toss<strong>in</strong>g an apple <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> air.<br />

He c<strong>at</strong>ches it without look<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> heart of a teacher and <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d of a<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>essman, Jamison was on <strong>the</strong> fast track<br />

to becom<strong>in</strong>g a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal. He began pursu<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

master’s degree <strong>in</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion, but<br />

midway through gradu<strong>at</strong>e school, he took a personality<br />

test th<strong>at</strong> changed everyth<strong>in</strong>g. “It came<br />

out th<strong>at</strong> I love two th<strong>in</strong>gs—sports and bus<strong>in</strong>ess,”<br />

says Jamison, who sits comfortably <strong>in</strong> a tailored<br />

suit on <strong>the</strong> locker room bench.<br />

Grow<strong>in</strong>g up, Jamison was personally <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

sports—he ran cross-country and track <strong>in</strong> high<br />

school and played tennis <strong>in</strong> college. In high school,<br />

Jamison ran a 4:35 mile and he looks like he could<br />

still w<strong>in</strong> a race or two.<br />

Jamison took <strong>the</strong> advice of his high school track<br />

coach about runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 8000m and applied it to<br />

his career life — you have to spr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> first lap,<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> second lap, and rest <strong>in</strong> between. Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

”It’s hard to get a class of fifth graders to be quiet [but not harder than<br />

w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Stanley Cup].”<br />

raced through <strong>the</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion lap, Jamison quickly<br />

moved on to sports. With<strong>in</strong> a year of tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

test, he had completely changed his direction from<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>at</strong>hletics.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> time, Jamison says he didn’t even know if<br />

jobs <strong>in</strong> professional <strong>at</strong>hletics existed. But <strong>the</strong>y do.<br />

And he’s had a few of <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Director of<br />

Market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> Athletes <strong>in</strong> Action, a Christian sports<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion, and Vice President of Oper<strong>at</strong>ions for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Indiana Pacers.<br />

Jamison says his most excit<strong>in</strong>g job is <strong>the</strong> one he<br />

has now. Before tak<strong>in</strong>g a position with <strong>the</strong> Sharks<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1993, he had only ever seen two hockey games.<br />

“I wasn’t always a hockey fan, but I am now,” says<br />

Jamison, runn<strong>in</strong>g his f<strong>in</strong>gers across <strong>the</strong> awards th<strong>at</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> locker room wall. “I like basketball,” he<br />

says, “but I really like hockey.”<br />

Jamison says th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> many ways teach<strong>in</strong>g prepared<br />

him for his current job— it taught him present<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

skills and <strong>the</strong> ability to <strong>in</strong>spire a group.<br />

“It’s hard to get a class of fifth graders to be<br />

quiet,” he jokes. But not harder than w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Stanley Cup, which Jamison says is <strong>the</strong> ultim<strong>at</strong>e<br />

goal of <strong>the</strong> Sharks.<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>est lesson Jamison learned<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> classroom is th<strong>at</strong> if you show people you<br />

believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y’ll work hard for you. When<br />

Jamison began, <strong>the</strong> Sharks was a struggl<strong>in</strong>g team<br />

with a poor record. Today <strong>the</strong>y have a shot <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> championship. Jamison stares <strong>at</strong> a picture of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Stanley Cup. Bene<strong>at</strong>h it is a piece of metal<br />

begg<strong>in</strong>g to be engraved.<br />

“But you still have to have luck on your side,” he<br />

says, push<strong>in</strong>g open <strong>the</strong> heavy locker room door.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> way out, Jamison passes a janitor push<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

cart of supplies. “Good afternoon, Mr. J,” says <strong>the</strong><br />

worker. “Afternoon,” says Jamison, flash<strong>in</strong>g a k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

smile. Then he leans <strong>in</strong> and whispers, “Mr. J, th<strong>at</strong>’s<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> my kids used to call me.” °

We wanted to give back, and we wanted to do it<br />

right and because of Connie, <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

every organized detail of this event, we can and<br />

we are,” Jim said.<br />

When one looks <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> stagger<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>at</strong>istics th<strong>at</strong><br />

follow this brutal disease, it’s not only easy to<br />

understand why Khaki’s chose Juvenile Diabetes<br />

Research Associ<strong>at</strong>ion for <strong>the</strong>ir primary beneficiary<br />

but it becomes obvious just how important this<br />

annual event really is.<br />

The Department of Health and Human Services<br />

st<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> diabetes was <strong>the</strong> sixth lead<strong>in</strong>g cause<br />

of de<strong>at</strong>h listed on U.S. de<strong>at</strong>h certific<strong>at</strong>es <strong>in</strong> 2002.<br />

If only this were but a mere factoid. Unfortun<strong>at</strong>ely,<br />

juvenile diabetes, also known as type 1 diabetes,<br />

strikes children and young adults and occurs as an<br />

organ-specific autoimmune disease.<br />

This means th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> body’s immune system <strong>at</strong>tacks<br />

and destroys cells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pancreas th<strong>at</strong> are needed<br />

for produc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong>. The body’s <strong>in</strong>ability to<br />

produce <strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>n results <strong>in</strong> too much glucose<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood, which is life thre<strong>at</strong>en<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

<strong>the</strong> youngsters who are diagnosed with it.<br />

yet, Khaki’s’ responsibility to help to improve quality<br />

of life extends beyond <strong>the</strong> medical world. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

suit with <strong>the</strong>ir commitment to children, Khaki’s’<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r beneficiary this year is <strong>the</strong> Carmel Valley youth<br />

Center, where <strong>the</strong>y believe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> adage th<strong>at</strong> it takes<br />

a village to raise a child. With activities rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from swimm<strong>in</strong>g to family d<strong>in</strong>ners, <strong>the</strong> Carmel Valley<br />

youth Center offers a positive environment for social<br />

growth and healthy extracurriculars.<br />

Guests who <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>the</strong> Khaki’s Ferrari fundraiser<br />

are not only lovers of stylish Italian automobiles;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are philanthropists contribut<strong>in</strong>g to gre<strong>at</strong>er<br />

causes. And while <strong>the</strong> Ockerts prepare for<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r whirlw<strong>in</strong>d event, <strong>the</strong>y welcome everyone<br />

with open arms. °

Nap Time: A Man Among Men COLUMN 72<br />

By Raymond Napolitano<br />

Welcome to <strong>the</strong> first and possibly only episode of Nap Time, a mildly twisted look <strong>at</strong> our world through<br />

my eyes. In this issue, devoted to men…give me some men, be <strong>the</strong>y stout hearted men and I’ll br<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

you 10 thousand more…s<strong>in</strong>g along with me. As my man James wailed: “This is a man’s world,” and don’t<br />

you forget it (isn’t th<strong>at</strong> right darl<strong>in</strong>g). We decide wh<strong>at</strong> happens, where and who to. Especially who to (each<br />

of my former English teachers, all women, are cr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> manly, virtually illiter<strong>at</strong>e sentence).<br />

you see, it is we men—hell, you can’t say we men, sounds so, so wee—us men (th<strong>at</strong> sounds better)—don’t<br />

have a problem break<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rules when we need to. We can always cre<strong>at</strong>e new ones. Even if <strong>the</strong> rules<br />

stand up, we can do <strong>the</strong> time, suffer <strong>the</strong> consequences, bite <strong>the</strong> bullet. We’re men. We can give and take<br />

punishment. M<strong>at</strong>ter of fact, we enjoy it, we derive our identities from it: “Cut it, cut <strong>the</strong> eye open,” says<br />

people’s champ Rocky Balboa to his grizzled (men get grizzled) corner man played by Burgess Meredith.<br />

We’ve got Testosterone baby; hair, muscles, deep boom<strong>in</strong>g voices, pred<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>cts—<strong>at</strong> least for a while, until our bodies start<br />

drastically reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> production of it and <strong>the</strong>n, even if we use someth<strong>in</strong>g like testosterone cream, it actually metabolizes as<br />

estrogen unless we add arom<strong>at</strong>ase <strong>in</strong>hibitors to <strong>the</strong> mix — but this is all barely cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>in</strong> its explan<strong>at</strong>ion and probably somewh<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>accur<strong>at</strong>e (I’m a man, I can say wh<strong>at</strong> I want). If you want real facts, go see Dr. Abraham Kryger on Cass Street <strong>in</strong> Monterey, he’s <strong>the</strong><br />

expert on hormones. I’m too busy to see a doctor, besides, I’m a man with unlimited virility, power, and dynamism, why would I<br />

need to see some doctor?<br />

I’ll just dye my hair, buy a faster car, d<strong>at</strong>e a slew of young chickies and talk louder when I tell my war stories about wh<strong>at</strong>ever<br />

life’s mythical b<strong>at</strong>tles I’ve been a part of. Wh<strong>at</strong>, you’ve already heard those stories, you say? I say, shut up and listen aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

I’m a man and you’ll hear me and love me…s<strong>in</strong>g along, “I’m a man yes I am and you can’t help but love me so,” apologies to<br />

Stevie W<strong>in</strong>wood. Used to call him Little Stevie W<strong>in</strong>wood, you see, he’s a man and men can have titles like Little, or Big, or Buster<br />

or Mac or Buck or Butchie.<br />

Me, I’m Nap, like take a nap…a good practice for ag<strong>in</strong>g gentlemen. Oh yeah, sometimes, if <strong>the</strong> conditions are right, if life<br />

conspires more with us than aga<strong>in</strong>st us, we become k<strong>in</strong>dly older gentlemen; gray, proud, wise, grandf<strong>at</strong>herly, like Gandolph<br />

The White, Walter Cronkite, Jimmy Carter, Morgan Freeman. The k<strong>in</strong>d of men you want your children <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g with, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of men who most likely shared <strong>the</strong> same unify<strong>in</strong>g component of <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual development; <strong>the</strong>y each were <strong>in</strong>fluenced by<br />

powerful, <strong>in</strong>telligent, lov<strong>in</strong>g women. °<br />

Architect Extraord<strong>in</strong>aire<br />

The n<strong>at</strong>ure of Al Saroyan’s m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>at</strong> once reflected <strong>in</strong> his l<strong>at</strong>est project, a home <strong>in</strong> Carmel. Cre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

a balanced and cohesive whole, <strong>the</strong> effect of his cre<strong>at</strong>ion is luxurious without be<strong>in</strong>g lazy, close without<br />

conf<strong>in</strong>ement, and elegant without elitism. Saroyan manages <strong>the</strong> same air, never condescend<strong>in</strong>g or<br />

<strong>in</strong>timid<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g while possess<strong>in</strong>g a keen <strong>in</strong>tellect and wealth of experience.<br />

BY ELIZABETH HERMENS PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUSSELL BYRNE

PERSONA 80<br />

Born <strong>in</strong> Sanger, California under ord<strong>in</strong>ary circumstances,<br />

Saroyan was left to <strong>in</strong>vestig<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

world <strong>in</strong> a way not possible today. Part of <strong>the</strong><br />

baby boomer gener<strong>at</strong>ion, he was left to his own<br />

devices much of <strong>the</strong> time. This helped him foster<br />

a sense of <strong>in</strong>dependence and curiosity th<strong>at</strong> would<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er advance his successes. But for <strong>the</strong>n, it led<br />

him <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r directions, <strong>the</strong> most constant, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

drumm<strong>in</strong>g. Play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> diverse bands, with styles<br />

rang<strong>in</strong>g from jazz to rock, music was “his life.”<br />

However, understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> prospects of a kit<br />

drummer, Saroyan tried his hand <strong>at</strong> architecture<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g a high school draft<strong>in</strong>g class. In his words,<br />

“Do you know why no good drummers have<br />

surfaced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 15 years? Because Al Saroyan<br />

became an architect.”<br />

Indeed, after study<strong>in</strong>g for five years, Saroyan<br />

received a bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> architecture with<br />

a m<strong>in</strong>or <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1970. yet, <strong>the</strong> degree was hard won.<br />

Throughout his youth, Saroyan struggled to<br />

read, barely pass<strong>in</strong>g subjects such as English and<br />

history. In high school, when he told his dean of his<br />

desire to study architecture <strong>in</strong> college, <strong>the</strong> dean<br />

chided th<strong>at</strong> Saroyan should <strong>at</strong>tend a trade school<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead. None<strong>the</strong>less, Saroyan worked hard <strong>in</strong><br />

junior college and transferred to Cal Poly. There,<br />

he encountered a variety of peripheral issues th<strong>at</strong><br />

thre<strong>at</strong>ened to slow his achievement.<br />

Fall<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> trigonometry class, Saroyan’s<br />

teacher recommended a tutor with whom Saroyan<br />

worked diligently up to three times per week<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structor warned would<br />

be on <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam. Saroyan received a 96% on<br />

th<strong>at</strong> test; however, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structor refused to believe<br />

<strong>the</strong> score was <strong>the</strong> result of “hard work,” and issued<br />

Saroyan a “D” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> class for che<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

”Do you know why no good drummers have surfaced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 15 years? Because<br />

Al Saroyan became an architect.”<br />

It wasn’t until Saroyan’s eldest son was diagnosed<br />

with dyslexia th<strong>at</strong> Saroyan was able to put a name<br />

to <strong>the</strong> difficulty th<strong>at</strong> offered him such challenges<br />

<strong>in</strong> school.<br />

Never<strong>the</strong>less, Saroyan pioneered his own architecture/construction<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, where<strong>in</strong> he eschews<br />

assembly-l<strong>in</strong>e production and does everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>-company, oversee<strong>in</strong>g projects from land or<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g purchase, to design, to construction, and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally, to sale. Much like his musician days, he<br />

directs every snare and cymbal and wouldn’t have<br />

it any o<strong>the</strong>r way. Of course, this requires extreme<br />

dedic<strong>at</strong>ion and focus, to <strong>the</strong> partial exclusion of<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terests. Excellence requires it, and Saroyan<br />

is will<strong>in</strong>g to pay th<strong>at</strong> price, not want<strong>in</strong>g to be <strong>the</strong><br />

proverbial jack-of-all-trades, master of none.<br />

Saroyan’s completed a variety of projects both<br />

commercial and domestic. His favorite piece,<br />

however, is “always <strong>the</strong> one I’m work<strong>in</strong>g on.” He<br />

relishes new projects as opportunities to express<br />

his l<strong>at</strong>est <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>at</strong>ion or idea, despite <strong>the</strong> tempt<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of recycl<strong>in</strong>g a previous success.<br />

yet, Saroyan doesn’t forgo all activities beyond<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g design. He does manage some time<br />

for his most recently explored hobbies, be <strong>the</strong>y<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, golf<strong>in</strong>g, or <strong>at</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g his youngest son’s<br />

baseball games. He just doesn’t take it as seriously<br />

as he does his work, because <strong>the</strong>re are simply not<br />

enough hours <strong>in</strong> a lifetime to pursue everyth<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> fullest extent he’s capable of.<br />

Once upon a time he would be termed homo<br />

unversalis, th<strong>at</strong> rare person who pursues all<br />

knowledge, driven by his own hunger for acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

skills and understand<strong>in</strong>gs. Today, he is content to<br />

be termed master builder.<br />

And after talk<strong>in</strong>g to Saroyan, one realizes th<strong>at</strong><br />

architecture is one of <strong>the</strong> few careers th<strong>at</strong> could<br />

occupy <strong>the</strong> man for long. His plans for retirement<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude tak<strong>in</strong>g his bus<strong>in</strong>ess abroad; <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words,<br />

not retir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> all. This is entirely fitt<strong>in</strong>g for Saroyan,<br />

however. One does not imag<strong>in</strong>e his drive to cre<strong>at</strong>e<br />

dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g, but r<strong>at</strong>her, ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

So goes <strong>the</strong> man as well, becom<strong>in</strong>g more dist<strong>in</strong>guished,<br />

with each endeavor, avoid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> one<br />

sorrow, which is, accord<strong>in</strong>g to John Bradshaw, not<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g who we were meant to be. °

Horses Trump a Learn<strong>in</strong>g Disability<br />

Ryan Pullara isn’t just follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his dad’s footsteps when it comes to work<strong>in</strong>g with horses; he’s show<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all those around him how to become a leader even with a learn<strong>in</strong>g disability.<br />

PERSONA 84<br />

Diagnosed with dyslexia <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> second grade,<br />

Pullara, now an eighth grader <strong>at</strong> Palma High<br />

School <strong>in</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>as, an all-boy Christian school, had<br />

his share of learn<strong>in</strong>g disabilities. yet <strong>the</strong> moment<br />

his grandf<strong>at</strong>her bought his family an Arabian horse,<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g changed.<br />

Three horses l<strong>at</strong>er, and somewhere between<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g to take care of and show Arabians <strong>at</strong> competitions,<br />

not to mention place n<strong>at</strong>ionally, Pullara’s<br />

self-confidence blossomed.<br />

“It’s been gre<strong>at</strong> for him,” said mom Genevieve<br />

Pullara. “The horses were for his self-esteem more<br />

than anyth<strong>in</strong>g else. It’s helped him out as a person.<br />

It’s even helped him get <strong>in</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>r sports. It’s<br />

always been a positive th<strong>in</strong>g for him.”<br />

His difficulty with read<strong>in</strong>g and spell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> an early<br />

age was soon overshadowed by Candelariavf,<br />

V<strong>in</strong>nie, and Conquistadorvf, his three Arabians.<br />

“I struggled with it (dyslexia) <strong>at</strong> school,” said<br />

Pullara. “But I believe <strong>in</strong> push<strong>in</strong>g yourself and<br />

don’t give up. If you keep push<strong>in</strong>g, it’ll eventually<br />

pay off.”<br />

Pay off, it did for Pullara, who, to d<strong>at</strong>e has garnered<br />

three Canadian N<strong>at</strong>ional titles <strong>in</strong> Western Pleasure,<br />

one second place, and two U.S. N<strong>at</strong>ional titles <strong>in</strong><br />

Country Pleasure Driv<strong>in</strong>g. He’s also won a reserve<br />

U.S. N<strong>at</strong>ional Championship <strong>in</strong> Western Pleasure.<br />

It’s not a prejudice, more like a preference when<br />

it comes to his horse-of-choice. It’s Arabians,<br />

16.1 hands-down.<br />

“I like <strong>the</strong>ir personality and how different <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are from all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs,” he said. “They’re a little<br />

calmer and a little prettier.”<br />

Born and raised <strong>in</strong> Carmel with his younger<br />

sibl<strong>in</strong>gs Aust<strong>in</strong> and Lauren, whom he says are “not<br />

<strong>in</strong>to horses,” Pullara spends as much time with<br />

his hoofed-buddies, of course, after <strong>the</strong><br />

homework is done.<br />

“I’m with <strong>the</strong>m after school and on <strong>the</strong> weekends,”<br />

he said. When he grows up, he’ll carve out a liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with his best friends. “I want to ride horses for a<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>in</strong> Arabian horses!” said Pullara.<br />

But life isn’t all about hors<strong>in</strong>g-around for Pullara,<br />

who enjoys o<strong>the</strong>r extra curricular activities. He<br />

plays football (defensive tackle and center),<br />

weight tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and baseball play<strong>in</strong>g first base,<br />

and left and right field.<br />

His idol though, is his tra<strong>in</strong>er Jim Lowe, owner<br />

of Lowe Show Horse Centre <strong>in</strong> Somis, California,<br />

near Los Angeles.<br />

“He’s won so much and he’s such a good tra<strong>in</strong>er,”<br />

said Pullara. “He teaches me how to ride and he<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> horses.”<br />

Pullara’s dad, Chris, who got his first horse <strong>at</strong> age<br />

four and said <strong>the</strong> entire family travels with his son<br />

to all his competitions. He’s happy it’s <strong>taken</strong> his son<br />

to new personal levels.<br />

“It’s been phenomenal,” said Chris. “He spends<br />

all his time with <strong>the</strong> horses and it’s taught him a<br />

lot of discipl<strong>in</strong>e. He’s a hard-work<strong>in</strong>g son-of-agun!<br />

It gives him someth<strong>in</strong>g to do and <strong>the</strong><br />

family to w<strong>at</strong>ch.”<br />

While <strong>the</strong> family’s farm also <strong>in</strong>cludes three dogs,<br />

one c<strong>at</strong> and a tortoise, Pullara said some of his<br />

classm<strong>at</strong>es are afraid of his thousand-pound pets,<br />

and he gives advice on how to calm <strong>the</strong> nerves.<br />

“If you’re afraid of <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y’ll be afraid of you.<br />

They can sense it,” said Pullara, who’s endured<br />

his share of fall<strong>in</strong>g off. “If I’m nervous, <strong>the</strong>y’ll be<br />

nervous. So just be calm and don’t freak out.<br />

They’re not try<strong>in</strong>g to hurt you.”<br />

In addition to horses and sports, Pullara also enjoys<br />

dirt bike rid<strong>in</strong>g, go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> movies and just pla<strong>in</strong><br />

old hang<strong>in</strong>g out with his friends, but when it comes<br />

to horses, <strong>the</strong>re’s no o<strong>the</strong>r thrill quite like it.<br />

“The adrenal<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> anyth<strong>in</strong>g can<br />

happen,” he said. “you have to th<strong>in</strong>k before <strong>the</strong><br />

horse th<strong>in</strong>ks. It’s a lot of fun, I love it!” °<br />

Ve<strong>in</strong>s, ve<strong>in</strong>s, go away…don’t come aga<strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r day.<br />

Dr. Robert Cush<strong>in</strong>g received his undergradu<strong>at</strong>e, medical school, and surgical residency tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of Michigan and served<br />

CD you mentioned a voc<strong>at</strong>ional school. Wh<strong>at</strong> will<br />

th<strong>at</strong> entail?<br />

JP The next big piece we want to do is a large<br />

voc<strong>at</strong>ional build<strong>in</strong>g. It’ll be called <strong>the</strong> Ted Taylor<br />

Voc<strong>at</strong>ional Center and will cost about three million<br />

dollars. We’ve raised almost half <strong>the</strong> money for<br />

it already. Joanne Taylor-Johnson, whose family<br />

founded and owned Fresh Express, has been<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> charge.<br />

We want to have a farm out here and grow our<br />

and serve <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cul<strong>in</strong>ary school. We also plan<br />

to have weld<strong>in</strong>g, fabric<strong>at</strong>ion, tractor mechanics<br />

and a carpentry shop. The Taylor family and Taylor<br />

Farms have made major contributions to this<br />

project, along with <strong>the</strong> D’Arrigo family and Howard<br />

The G<strong>at</strong>es of Opportunity Citronelle<br />

Leach, <strong>the</strong> former ambassador to France. Between<br />

those people, we have a commitment of about 1.3<br />

million dollars towards our voc<strong>at</strong>ional school. I’m<br />

hop<strong>in</strong>g to have <strong>the</strong> cul<strong>in</strong>ary school open <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end<br />

of this year and <strong>the</strong> voc<strong>at</strong>ional school open <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

CD How are <strong>the</strong> kids com<strong>in</strong>g along? Any<br />

success stories?<br />

JP Success stories? We’ve got a lot of <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Our l<strong>at</strong>est st<strong>at</strong>istics show a 57 percent reduction<br />

<strong>in</strong> recidivism after six months and an 87 percent<br />

reduction after one year. And we’re follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through on wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> kids do after <strong>the</strong>y’re done<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> trades. I got one young man a job<br />

<strong>at</strong> Sal<strong>in</strong>as Steel Builders and he’s worked <strong>the</strong>re for<br />

a year and a half, do<strong>in</strong>g excellent. He came and<br />

spoke <strong>at</strong> our gymnasium open<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We have job slots for kids when <strong>the</strong>y leave here—<br />

which no one else offers—and we want to expand<br />

th<strong>at</strong>. The D’Arrigo Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Company is sett<strong>in</strong>g up<br />

an <strong>in</strong>ternship program. Don Chap<strong>in</strong> has hired some<br />

of our people. We have a lot of connections th<strong>at</strong><br />

give us good resources.<br />

CD Thanks for talk<strong>in</strong>g with me. I hope this article<br />

helps keep you visible.<br />

JP We’re gett<strong>in</strong>g a lot more visibility than we ever<br />

had before. People are realiz<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> problem<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se young kids go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wrong way isn’t<br />

necessarily just a police problem or <strong>the</strong> court’s<br />

problem. It’s a problem for all of us. I’m see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more and more positive response from Pen<strong>in</strong>sula<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and bus<strong>in</strong>esses. People are<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g to realize th<strong>at</strong> we’ve been lock<strong>in</strong>g up our<br />

workforce! They’re less <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to try and isol<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> problem as “those kids over <strong>the</strong>re,” and are<br />

now say<strong>in</strong>g, “Hey, this is our future gener<strong>at</strong>ion.”<br />

The concept of build<strong>in</strong>g more prisons and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> prison budget isn’t work<strong>in</strong>g. No one feels<br />

any safer. And <strong>the</strong> prisons aren’t do<strong>in</strong>g a very good<br />

job of gett<strong>in</strong>g people tra<strong>in</strong>ed so <strong>the</strong>y can come out<br />

and be productive members of society. It makes a<br />

lot more sense to put money <strong>in</strong>to programs early<br />

on. And <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long run, it’s cheaper. °<br />

For example,<br />

Keene offers a<br />

braised short rib<br />

cooked for 72-hours<br />

dish th<strong>at</strong> he says<br />

“e<strong>at</strong>s like a filet.” (My<br />

wife agreed with him after try<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> dish.) He also<br />

cooks <strong>the</strong> abalone th<strong>at</strong> makes regular appearances<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Citronelle menu for an hour and a half to<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e a tender and moist altern<strong>at</strong>ive to <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

quick-cook approach.<br />

While he is pledged to “avoid<strong>in</strong>g excessive sauces,”<br />

he knows and teaches th<strong>at</strong> a key to successful<br />

cook<strong>in</strong>g is understand<strong>in</strong>g how to build a sauce.<br />

Start<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> right stock and know<strong>in</strong>g wh<strong>at</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>d of dish <strong>the</strong> sauce will be served with, Keene<br />

says, allows one’s cre<strong>at</strong>ivity to play imag<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ively<br />

with taste comb<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ions and is a gre<strong>at</strong> joy. “I like to<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e excitement while I’m cook<strong>in</strong>g good food,”<br />

he says.<br />

Meanwhile, his customers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Citronelle’s nicely<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g room enjoy <strong>the</strong> forest-like experience<br />

while <strong>the</strong>y listen to haunt<strong>in</strong>g and enchant<strong>in</strong>g<br />

music with a strong European jazz flavor. The wait<br />

staff are well-tra<strong>in</strong>ed and service-oriented. Our<br />

waiter, Brian, was solicitous and humorous <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same time as he and <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g room<br />

crew made sure our meal experience was seamless.<br />

We found <strong>the</strong> menu conta<strong>in</strong>ed no dishes th<strong>at</strong><br />

one could call “ord<strong>in</strong>ary.” We began with an<br />

appetizer duo consist<strong>in</strong>g of an escargot crumble<br />

and a fasc<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g dish th<strong>at</strong> looked like a quarter<br />

of a hard-boiled egg but which Brian assured us<br />

was white mozzarella cheese wrapped around a<br />

yellow tom<strong>at</strong>o “yolk.” After asparagus soup and<br />

abalone warm-ups, my wife <strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> aforementioned<br />

short ribs with gre<strong>at</strong> enthusiasm while I thoroughly<br />

enjoyed a delic<strong>at</strong>e Sable Fish prepared with a misobased<br />

sauce th<strong>at</strong> was perfect for <strong>the</strong> seafood.<br />

Reflect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> playfulness of <strong>the</strong> menu, I enjoyed an<br />

exquisite dessert dish labeled simply “Chocol<strong>at</strong>e”<br />

with a sub-title “Le Kit K<strong>at</strong> Bar” while my wife took<br />

gre<strong>at</strong> pleasure <strong>in</strong> a stand-alone Mango soufflé.<br />

DEEP FAMILY ROOTS<br />

Interest<strong>in</strong>gly, both Violi and Keene trace <strong>the</strong>ir roots<br />

back to <strong>the</strong> hospitality bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Keene’s mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

ran a hotel <strong>in</strong> Ann Arbor, Michigan, while he was<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g up while Violi’s parents were <strong>the</strong> owners<br />

of Violi’s Restaurant <strong>in</strong> Massena, Ny. His two<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs still own and oper<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> restaurant, which<br />

has been <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same loc<strong>at</strong>ion for 60 years.<br />

Violi has spent his entire career <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospitality<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>the</strong> first 14 years after gradu<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g from<br />

Cornell work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Hy<strong>at</strong>t cha<strong>in</strong>, followed by six<br />

years with Ritz-Carlton. He came to Citronelle from<br />

a five-year st<strong>in</strong>t runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Swissotel <strong>in</strong> Chicago.<br />

A bachelor, Violi spends <strong>the</strong> vast majority of his time<br />

tend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Carmel Valley Ranch property and its<br />

250 employees.<br />

Keene began his career work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> Ritz-<br />

Carlton cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> D.C., Atlanta, Arizona, Hong Kong,<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>at</strong> Laguna Nigel. After work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ojai Valley Inn <strong>in</strong> Santa Barbara, Keene enjoyed<br />

a four-year st<strong>in</strong>t as chef on a priv<strong>at</strong>e island <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Florida Keys. It was <strong>the</strong>re th<strong>at</strong> LXR recruited him<br />

for a restaurant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Keys before offer<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>the</strong><br />

He enjoys bik<strong>in</strong>g and garden<strong>in</strong>g and also loves<br />

golf, which he doesn’t get much chance to play<br />

despite work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> site of one of <strong>the</strong> better<br />

courses <strong>in</strong> this golf-rich area. “I’m here from 9 a.m.<br />

for much of anyth<strong>in</strong>g else.” °<br />

PERSONA 90<br />

They must sell more<br />

than motorcycles,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y must sell <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

store, <strong>the</strong>ir service<br />

department, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

parts department,<br />

even <strong>the</strong>mselves…<br />

People who buy John’s motorcycles buy <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> dealership and become like family. Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

your motorcycle <strong>in</strong> for repairs entitles you to an<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduction to <strong>the</strong> technician who will be work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on your bike.<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>ual change is <strong>the</strong>ir only constant. Nobody <strong>in</strong><br />

this bus<strong>in</strong>ess ever outgrows <strong>the</strong> need to learn and<br />

improve. Dealerships must keep adapt<strong>in</strong>g just to<br />

stay even. It’s a different bus<strong>in</strong>ess now than it was<br />

five years ago.<br />

They’re not sell<strong>in</strong>g your grandf<strong>at</strong>her’s motorcycles, or<br />

even your older bro<strong>the</strong>r’s. Technology itself is always<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g forward. Advance is relentless because <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry is cont<strong>in</strong>ually re<strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g itself. Every year<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir plants, systems, m<strong>at</strong>erials, and designs raise <strong>the</strong><br />

technology bar; thus, market<strong>in</strong>g and sales programs<br />

must evolve every year.<br />

John had to learn to focus upon customer experiences<br />

more than any practical consider<strong>at</strong>ion. John<br />

learned to capture customers’ energy, to sell <strong>the</strong>m<br />

dreams and visions.<br />

At Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Sports Center, <strong>the</strong> dealership<br />

is big, but it has heart. They will never<br />

succumb to <strong>the</strong> tempt<strong>at</strong>ion of becom<strong>in</strong>g big box<br />

retail. They remember who <strong>the</strong>ir customers are;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y remember <strong>the</strong> names of <strong>the</strong>ir regulars.<br />

Institut<strong>in</strong>g a practice called Customer Rel<strong>at</strong>ionship<br />

Management, <strong>the</strong>y keep <strong>in</strong> contact with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

customers, follow<strong>in</strong>g up with and tak<strong>in</strong>g care of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. John and his staff cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> various ways<br />

to develop rel<strong>at</strong>ionships th<strong>at</strong> were formed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time of purchase.<br />

Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Sports Center has actually<br />

become some customer’s Third Place where <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can dr<strong>in</strong>k coffee, share experiences, and engage<br />

<strong>in</strong> some “bench rac<strong>in</strong>g.” John feels it’s a privilege<br />

to share <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r people’s enthusiasms. Talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shop with <strong>the</strong>se guys is a pleasant part of <strong>the</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, which is partly why <strong>the</strong>y sponsor special<br />

events called Bike Nights, complete with BBQ, a<br />

band, and shop talk.<br />

John’s customers actually represent a wide demographic<br />

range from younger sport bike enthusiasts<br />

to more m<strong>at</strong>ure cruiser devotees. In light of <strong>the</strong><br />

current gas crisis, Pen<strong>in</strong>sula residents are also<br />

start<strong>in</strong>g to get <strong>the</strong> idea of commute bikes. A Vespa<br />

scooter might get 70 miles per gallon while some<br />

of <strong>the</strong> smaller scooters might get 110 miles per<br />

gallon. Some people who have never been motorcyclists<br />

are throw<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>the</strong> shackles of <strong>the</strong> Ford<br />

and GMC psychology.<br />

ON TO THE FUTURE<br />

Monterey Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Sports Center is <strong>in</strong> a good<br />

place but <strong>the</strong> fact rema<strong>in</strong>s th<strong>at</strong> a bus<strong>in</strong>ess like<br />

this demands constant <strong>at</strong>tention. They’re always<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about wh<strong>at</strong>’s ahead and are mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to<br />

an excit<strong>in</strong>g and undifferenti<strong>at</strong>ed future. One of<br />

John’s heroes, Wayne Huizenga, began with a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle garbage truck and grew his Waste Management<br />

service <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> country’s largest waste<br />

disposal company, and leveraged <strong>the</strong> company <strong>in</strong><br />

found<strong>in</strong>g three Fortune 500 companies.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g Huizenga’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess model, John plans<br />

to acquire o<strong>the</strong>r underperform<strong>in</strong>g dealerships,<br />

make <strong>the</strong>m profitable, and <strong>the</strong>n sell <strong>the</strong>m, leverag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

profits for ever-more-ambitious acquisitions.<br />

John is an ambitious 20-someth<strong>in</strong>g-year-old who<br />

has found it tough to be as young as he is and lead<br />

such a sizable company — manag<strong>in</strong>g people who<br />

are, <strong>in</strong> some cases, three times his age. He has<br />

hidden his age, even grew a mustache and a beard<br />

to look older.<br />

Fast forward six years to today and John’s dad is<br />

pleased with <strong>the</strong> results of his <strong>in</strong>vestment. Present<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> struggles and challenges, Dad is now<br />

retired, but John consults with him. John never<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ed while grow<strong>in</strong>g up th<strong>at</strong> he would have<br />

such a phenomenal rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with his f<strong>at</strong>her.<br />

John doesn’t have much personal time but<br />

manages to get away to Laguna Seca on some<br />

days. He gets on his 170 HP Duc<strong>at</strong>i 1098 Superbike<br />

and on one of <strong>the</strong> straight-aways, when he’s hitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

140 MPH, caught up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> grace of <strong>the</strong> experience;<br />

he understands wh<strong>at</strong> ballet must be like.<br />

It’s <strong>the</strong>se times especially th<strong>at</strong> John’s one with<br />

<strong>the</strong> experience and becomes bro<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

customers. He’s with <strong>the</strong>m and shares <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

passion for <strong>the</strong> power and freedom th<strong>at</strong> motorcycles<br />

provide. °<br />
